Some sort of template or ID error

See File:The Town Crier, v.15, no.1, Jan. 3, 1920 - DPLA - d8286da4b3b7c2c8a605189456e1fe19 (page 1).jpg. Pretty certain the error is yours, though I guess someone else could have messed up a template. It's all over the place on at least the Town Crier uploads from that year, but I'd guess it's a lot broader than that, and was caused by some recent change. - Jmabel ! talk 00:44, 2 October 2023 (UTC)

@Jmabel: Yeah, I have had a really busy week at work and not been able to spend as much time on Commons as I need to stay on top of this all. There are a couple of different things going on, all related. I am working towards replacing all the templates originally uploaded along with the DPLA files with {{DPLA metadata}}, so that they can be fully SDC-powered, replatecing {{Artwork}} (and also anything using {{NARA-image-full}}, I think). I added that template to only a few hundred (of our millions) of uploads initially, to be able to test it in different situations. But, as you saw, that template was briefly broken, which caused issues on those images (luckly not all the millions!). As you also noted, it's currently relying on a module's sandbox features, which was because the main module doesn't support SDC, and I was waiting for this edit request to be actioned. I just pinged Mike again, because I realized it's been sitting since mid-August. I haven't rolled it out across all of our images in large part because of the sandbox issue. But one thing I did as part of the transition was to update {{DPLA}} (a nested template) so that it adds the aggregator's category based on the Wikidata ID and not the plain text string in a template parameter. This is what's throwing the script errors on pages now that you're seeing here, and also was noted here—I think this is caused by being given words like "Northwest Digital Heritage" when it is trying to look up a Wikidata entity ID with that parameter value. I was originally thinking the substitution of the template was imminent and that would fix all the issues along with it. It's a bit of a mess right now, but when this is all done, things will work a lot more smoothly if everything works right. I only have a couple of hours I can put into this some weeks, so I am kind of drowning until this template migration is done. Dominic (talk) 18:07, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
What (if anything) is that SDC approach going to do (or may have already done) with the hundred, maybe thousand, of edits I made to descriptions, and the dozens, maybe hundreds, of corrected titles? - Jmabel ! talk 18:41, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
@Jmabel: That partly depends on where you are putting the changes, I guess, but I definitely wouldn't want to lose any contributions. If you are directly editing the institution's description/title, I don't think I realized that, and it might cause an issue because it's not trivial to determine when a conflict with the current metadata is because they changed it vs. a Commons editor. It's good that you bring this up, though, so we can figure it out now. I don't think many besides you are doing this level of adding/correcting data, so maybe it's not a widespread issue beyond the images you touch—but I wouldn't want to overwrite anything. I guess it's two questions: (1) how to identify and rescue the changes you already made, and (2) generally, how to handle allowing changes made by the community and displaying them. Maybe it's possible to add unstructured descriptions by adding more {{InFi}}s somewhere. Or to display SDC statements not from the original source institution separately somehow (though there isn't a good property for description currently). You're welcome to edit the template yourself if you have ideas here or want to try something out. Dominic (talk) 19:15, 2 October 2023 (UTC)
File:Elliott Bay sunset, probably before 1889 - DPLA - cd9cd454e8804395a00fe402fc987c12 (page 1).jpg has examples of almost every type of edit I'd be likely to make:
  • categories added
  • old, erroneous title was moved to "original description" field of templage (which shows in the UI as "original title")
  • corrected title was added in "title" field
  • Line with four dashes added at bottom of description as supplied, further description added after that (including, in this case, showing both sides of the postcard and providing additional information).
  • Date corrected
The only other likely types of edit are both shown at File:The Town Crier, v.15, no.1, Jan. 3, 1920 - DPLA - d8286da4b3b7c2c8a605189456e1fe19 (page 3).jpg
* add a link for an extracted image, typically either in an "other versions" section of the template or (as here) free-floating outside of the template.
* correct outright typos in description (note strike-through & bolding here).

DPLA Map QA

I recently began looking in to the intersection of DPLA and existing uploaded maps. Upon reviewing the Sanborn Maps category I noticed that the DPLA bot applied the artwork template instead of the map template. I've started a discussion on the need for flagging/reviewing maps without the map template falling within a probable map category at Sanborn Maps uploaded by DPLA - missing map template. I was hoping that checking categories are part of the DPLA QA pipeline and templating appropriately if an item fall within https://dp.la/search?subject=%22Fire%20insurance%20maps%22 or more broadly https://dp.la/search?subject=%22Maps%22. The practice for the template is noted on Commons:Wikimaps and the template enables integration with Wikimaps Warper or other discovery processes relying on the Map template. Is this artwork template to map template on your radar to correct and/or remediate? If not, please share in the maps discussion if I've misunderstood something about current practices for maps or how I could help. Wolfgang8741 (Ohio University) (talk) 21:59, 9 November 2023 (UTC)
