First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.
Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

С разрешением уже все в порядке. Файлы нужно оформлять примерно вот так File:Oleksandr_Kochura.jpg (желательно ставить ссылку на исходный файл, чтоб можно было проверить, действительно ли он из тех альбомов, а не искать его среди сотен фотографий; если ссылку на ВКонтакте спам-фильтр не пропскает, убираете http:// ). P.S. Не совсем понимаю, какой смысл грузить фото футболиста со спины, если уже есть его фото спереди.--Anatoliy (talk) 20:37, 15 April 2011 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Mitte27,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

ЛОЛ, зачем мне накручивать счётчик правок на викискладе? Я занимался лишь разбором фото по Симферополю. Вот даже сейчас, вместо исправления ошибки, лишь угрозы. Хорошие порядки. Perform batch task

Hello, if you want to nominate for deletion several images from one user or inside one category you should use this tool : Help:VisualFileChange.js, and the tool itself automatically creates the DR, list the DR, tag the files and notify the uploader.

I say that because I saw Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Omrantd and the message there User talk:Omrantd, the images were not tagged for deletion, and you did not give a link to the DR in your message.

It's not that serious because the content was indeed inappropriate and I speedy deleted it, but it will be better that you learn to use the VisualFileChange tool if you want to make such DR. It will be more easy for you, and everything will be done in the rules of art.

On December 11, you nominated 109 files for deletion with "Copyright violation" as the only reason. THat's not very helpful, as then someone else must figure out why you think it is a copyright violation. I assume you have a reason in each case -- please go back over the DRs and add your reasons. Hello. We appreciate any help with tagging such files but I agree with Jim that it is more helpful if you include some reasoning e.g. a URL where you think the file came from or if the EXIF gives a different author. With each of the files I deleted, that you’d tagged, I had to spend an extra minute to work out what the reasoning was. Once or twice isn’t a big issue but when you realise you might spend an extra half hour to go through 30 files, it becomes a little onerous. Yes, let me add my thanks to Green Giant's -- certainly I don't mean to discourage you from doing more of the same -- we need all the help we can get, as the backlogs are increasing. However, please keep in mind that Commons gets about 10,000 new files every day and must delete about 2,000 of them. I totally agree with my colleagues, furthermore as administrator we are supposed to delete images carefully. Don't hesitate to write the full reason that push you to think an image or a set of image is likely a copyright violation, exemple "small size without EXIFs this image is unlikely to be own work" or any other reason you may have. There were several others who had people in the photos of national monuments, at least pick on them too if you're going to pick on me. Вікі любить пам'ятки 2018 в Україні

Вітаємо!

1 вересня вже традиційно стартувала українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»! До 30 вересня включно Ви можете подавати власні фото пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України — і змагатися за призи. Цього року є трохи змін у правилах конкурсу:

  • фотографії пам'яток, для яких на момент початку конкурсу (відповідно до відомої Організаційному комітету інформації) не було жодної ілюстрації на Вікісховищі або у Вікіпедії, отримують коефіцієнт рівний 7 (для кожної пам'ятки);
  • фотографії автоматично вантажаться у категорію, яка бере учать у номінації за найбільшу кількість сфотографованих об'єктів, для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації за найкраще фото потрібно вибрати необхідні налаштування у завантажувачі.

Також у конкурсі є спецномінація банерів для статей у Вікімандрах, детальніше за посиланням.

Если Вы внимательно посмотрите на фото, то увидите там цифру - 1918. Обелиск посвящён трагическим событиям, произошедшим в городе Надеждинске (ныне Серове) 20 ноября 1918 года, то есть расстрелу белогвардейцами группы советских работников. Привіт!

Наш цьогорічний конкурс добігає свого кінця — залишилося ще 4 дні. Проміжні підсумки конкурсу опубліковано на сайті. У нас зараз понад 13500 світлин, і це значить, що Україна посідає четверте місце, поступаючись Росії (23 тисячі), Німеччині (21 тисяча) та Італії (19 тисяч). Загалом, понад 200 учасників цього року уже. Дякуємо, що вантажили фото у попередні роки, якщо б Вам захотілося ще взяти участь цього року, то може бути корисно переглянути цей пост із покроковою інструкцією як вантажити світлини: «Як подати свою роботу на конкурс». Hi, regarding the file File:Kronikat-e-adamit.jpg The issue was that "A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license."

The permission was granted by the author by using OTRS (email was sent to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org), 6 days ago, however, the corresponding Wikimedia section (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kronikat-e-adamit.jpg) still says "This media file is missing evidence of permission."

Здравствуйте, я взял фотографии, на которых написано ОБЩЕСТВЕННОЕ ДОСТОЯНИЕ(public domain), с Радио Свободы, и ссылки, чтобы вы сами могли убедиться, я дал. Не понимаю, почему вы решили, что их следует удалить Devlet Geray, 30 January 2019, 22:57 UTC

Я є новачком у редагуванні Вікіпедії. Порадьте, будь ласка, яким чином вказати ліцензування фото File:Сінкевич Борис Якович-1.jpg. Це фото було зроблено у 1970-1980 роках. На ньому зображено мого батька, який вже помер. Оригінал цього фото є у мене, я власноруч його відсканувала. Яким чином вийти з цієї ситуації? Неправомірне використання шаблону

Вітання! Сьогодні ви на кілька десятків файлів, які завантажені користувачем Nashastudiya виставили шаблон {{No permission since}}. Для мене очевидним є, що шаблон на таку кількість файлів виставлений поспіхом без належної оцінки кожного окремого файлу. У багатьох з них є проблеми з указанням правильних дат створення та авторства, але це тільки недосвідченість користувача при завантаженні та далі в оформленні файлів. І це не означає, що таким самим способом масового вставляння шаблону, ви маєте порушувати правила патрулювання. Тому раджу вам ще раз переглянути кожний окремий файл, проаналізувати помилкові дати й шаблон авторства, прибрати неправомірно встановлений шаблон {{No permission since}} у тих файлів, що є вільними і поставити відповідно інші прийнятні шаблони як ось {{PD-Ukraine}}, {{PD-Polish}}, {{PD-Old}} чи інші, які доречні. --Микола Василечко (talk) 15:03, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

    • Ні, прошу пана, очевидно, що це ви будете прибирати шаблон там, де він недоречний, бо інші користувачі прибирати цей шаблон просто так не можуть. Повторюю, що таким способом масового вставляння шаблону, ви порушуєте правила патрулювання! І ще наголошую, що такі масові постановки на вилучення вже не раз були скасовані, бо неможливо до всіх файлів застосувати однакове пояснення. Тому для вас найкращим варіантом може бути прибирання цього шаблону і виставлення файлів групами на повільне видалення з указанням конкретних причин для подальшого можливого обговорення. --Микола Василечко (talk) 15:20, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
  •  Comment Usually the tag {{No permission since}} is used for the cases that a source and a author are provided but when you are visiting the source webpage then you are not able to verify the license, example. However it's not up to other contributors, and not to Mitte27, to fix information gaps on some uploads, but a better way for this kind of case is more likely a deletion requet. And it is very common for experimented administrators to make deletion requests for this kind of case "historical images or documents that are obviously wrongly tagged as own works and with a bogus CC license, example Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Uchenikkoreneva made by User:EugeneZelenko. Whoever wants to add the right author, the right date and the right tag is of course free to do so, but we must not require that a person not responsible for a upload have to do this work. Вікі любить пам'ятки 2019 в Україні

Привіт!

1 вересня вже традиційно стартує українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»! До кінця вересня Ви можете подавати власні фото пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України — і змагатися за призи. Більше про те, як взяти участь, можна прочитати за посиланням.

Із детальними правилами можна ознайомитися тут. Для тих, хто раніше уже брав участь у конкурсі — зауважте, що цього року є певні зміни:

  • у номінації «Найкраще фото» — файли повинні мати не менше 4 МПкс;
  • у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток» — оцінка фотографії пам'ятки складається із суми базового та додаткових балів (в останній враховується чи ця пам'ятка вже фотографувалася іншими авторами та скільки фотографій пам'яток уже є з цього населеного пункту);

Нагадаємо, що фотографії автоматично беруть участь у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток»; однак для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації «Найкраще фото», потрібно підтвердити це при завантаженні.

Також цього року маємо спецномінації «Єврейська спадщина» та «Млини». Також окремо відзначатимуться найкращі відео із пам'ятками.

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators.

    • В правилах я смотрел, но непонятно как потвердить свое авторство. Если бы автором был не я, то было бы нетрудно. Даже по качеству этих фото видно, что не с телеканала, т. е. взяты не напрямую с телеканалов и их сайтов, последние 2 фото вообще не имели отношения к телевидении. Шаблон {{No permission}} служит для пометки файлов, где указан автор и внешний источник, но в этом источнике не указано согласие автора на размещение под свободной лицензией.     • Не вижу там подобного одобрения. Написано, что вы не обязаны искать настоящего автора и источник, но прямо сказано, что "лучшим способом для такого рода случаев является, скорее всего, запрос на удаление". 99 % удаляется - это, во-первых, тренд на удализм, вообще свойственный Commons, а во-вторых, следствие того, что не каждый день и не каждый администратор разбирает ежедневную категорию no permission вручную. Многие просто удаляют всё содержимое массово при помощи специального гаджета, предполагая, что раз до этого момента никто не оспорил вынос, то и проверять нечего. Хотите, для примера возьмем несколько любых правомерно загруженных вами изображений, повесим на них этот тег, оставим его неоспоренным и подождем результата? --VLu (talk) 11:38, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Monuments and memorials

Доброго вечора. А для чого ви робите ось таку заміну категорій? По-перше, це не пам'ятник і не меморіал, тож категорія не в тему. По-друге, ви таким чином виводите її з дерева Category:Cultural heritage monuments in Ukraine, і в такому разі на неї й не можуть вийти боти: якщо з деревом Cultural heritage monuments вони ще працюють, то в дереві Monuments and memorials лежать і не пам'ятки теж. Разрешение на фотографии Добровольской

Добрый день, Mitte27, спасибо за тег, надеюсь не слишком беспокою вопросом, и вообще надеюсь, что пишу туда, куда следует.

Но не могли бы Вы подсказать, как мне исправить ситуацию с разрешением на публкацию фотографии. Картинки -- из семейного архива, их мне по моей просьбе дал сын Э.Д.Добровольской, разрешил размещать. Предположу, что он sole owner. Но мы мало знакомы, я просто написала ему, когда мне пришла в голову мысль, что страницу Э.Д. стоит создать. Я в данном случае историк, работала с ее архивом в Ярославле, удивилась, что страницы нет, и вот взялась.

Вопрос такой: Мне сейчас надо попросить его заполнить "рыбу" письма отсюда https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Email_templates/Consent и отправить по адресу permissions-commons@wikimedia.org?

Достаточно мне переслать ему "рыбу" и адрес, а ему -- написать со своего мейла, или нужно еще что-то?

I just found here a lot of red links. Yes, a few of them still miss the license - other people still adding a license to their sites. Can you restore all deleted files except kolobike*? Vitaly Zdanevich

Вікі любить пам'ятки 2020 в Україні / Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in Ukraine

Привіт!

З 1 по 30 вересня вже традиційно пройде українська частина міжнародного фотоконкурсу «Вікі любить пам'ятки»! На конкурс можна подавати власні фото пам'яток історико-культурної спадщини України — і змагатися за призи. Більше можна прочитати за посиланням.

Радимо ознайомитися із детальними правилами, а також із відповідями на часті питання. З найважливіших змін цього року:

  • у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток» — збільшився додатковий бал за фотографії пам'яток (якщо світлин пам'ятки раніше не було завантажено, то можна отримати 21 бал.

Нагадаємо, що всі фотографії автоматично беруть участь у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток»; однак для того, щоб фото позмагалося у номінації «Найкраще фото», потрібно підтвердити це при завантаженні.

Цього року теж є спецномінації «Єврейська спадщина», «Млини» та «Відео». Також є спеціальна номінація від проєкту «Via Regia Ukraine» — у ній автоматично беруть участь світлини всіх пам’яток міст України, через які пролягає Via Regia — Дубно, Рівне, Острог, Львів, Броди, Городок (Львівська область), Луцьк, Володимир-Волинський, Радомишль, Житомир та Київ. Цього року у Завантажувачі не передбачено окремих параметрів для спецномінацій — світлини зараховуватимуться автоматично з відповідних списків.
