Rights of User:CommonsMaintenanceBot

Hi Odder, I have seen that on 12:11, 18. March 2017 you have demoted User:Rillke from Administrator to a regular user. The global rights log does not give a reason, but I would assume/guess due to inactivity. The same user is also given as the operator of User:CommonsMaintenanceBot, a bot that is blocked for several years now but, as bots are generally not checked for inactivity removal of rights, it is still part of the interface admin and admin user groups (see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:ListUsers?username=CommonsMaintenanceBot&group=&wpsubmit=&wpFormIdentifier=mw-listusers-form&limit=1). Even though nothing has happend for quite some years, I would think that it would be appropriate to remove these two rights from the blocked, inactive bot account. Appreciate your thougths. -- Schlurcher (talk) 07:49, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

@Schlurcher: I agree completely. I've removed administrator, interface administrator and bot flags from this account, seeing that it's been blocked for over three years now. Thanks for noticing! odder (talk) 09:44, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

user:Szczebrzeszynski

Please remove autopatroller flag from deceased user. 171.6.236.173 16:52, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

@171.6.236.173: This has now been done; the account is also globally locked. odder (talk) 17:17, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

Upload request

Could you please upload File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-5) with removal of Inkscape editor data.svg over File:Flag of the United Kingdom (3-5).svg? It fixes some problems in which the dimensions are not exact, but only approximate, and also removes Inkscape editor data. SVG-image-maker (talk) 17:51, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

@SVG-image-maker: This is now done. I had a look at the file's code—well done! Fabulous savings in terms of code size. odder (talk) 23:07, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

Another upload request

I was wondering if you could upload File:Flag of Palestine (fixed).svg over File:Flag of Palestine.svg because if you zoom in the the top left of the latter file, you can see that the red triangle is not actually a triangle. SVG-image-maker (talk) 18:03, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

@SVG-image-maker: This is also done now. Nicely spotted :-) odder (talk) 23:07, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

Vandalizing User

Hi, user Djali08 keeps reverting flags to older versions. Can you please stop them and cancel out their actions? Best regards. Kamran.nef (talk) 23:42, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

@Kamran.nef: I've contacted the user on their talk page and asked for an explanation. They however continued reverting more files so I've blocked their account as a precaution. I'll allow them to explain their actions as they can edit their talk page. I'll try to revert their edits tomorrow/in a few hours' time. odder (talk) 00:00, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you so much Kamran.nef (talk) 00:06, 3 August 2023 (UTC)

File:Franciszek Stefczyk - Rolnicze spółki magazynowe.pdf

Thanks for uploading File:Franciszek Stefczyk - Rolnicze spółki magazynowe.pdf, Don't forget to add a completed {{Book}} template on the file description page for your upload! It helps in providing additional catalog data on Commons, as well as on other projects.

If you could also do this for other 'books' you have uploaded, even better. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 17:01, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Public domain day logo font

Hi! I would like to do a PT-version of the wonderful Public Domain Day logo. I was wondering if you can help me with the font that is used? thanks MariaCurista (talk) 11:27, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi @MariaCurista — I'm pretty sure the font is called "Miso". odder (talk) 13:39, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Logo Request

Hello Odder

Please can you help to create Wikipedia Logo for Igala Wikipedia? the translation for Wikipedia the free Encyclopedia is Wikipídiya Úko Aláfà. Thanks as I anticipated your kind response. The link to our project page on wikimedia incubator is https://incubator.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wp/igl AgnesAbah (talk) 08:00, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi @AgnesAbah, apologies for the delay in getting back to you on this. I have had some computer problems recently (I dropped my laptop from a height...) but they're now fixed so I should be able to create your logo in the next few days. odder (talk) 16:43, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
Really sorry about your laptop and am happy to hear that your laptop is fixed now. Thanks in advance as I anticipate your kind response in creating the logo AgnesAbah (talk) 21:43, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
@AgnesAbah: I've now uploaded a new version of File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-igl.svg, please let me know how it looks! I apologise for the delay again — unfortunately my laptop is broken beyond repair but I managed to get the logo done for you. odder (talk) 10:53, 12 April 2024 (UTC)

Request to use picture

Dear Tomasz, I'm not sure how to best reach you, but I'd like to ask you for permission to use your picture of the flowers after the Manchester attack on St Ann's square in a book about responses to terrorism. Since it's an academic book, it would also need a "commercial" license (or exception from you in this case). Could you please tell me how to contact you, or perhaps send me an e-mail: the first part is j.h.de.roy.van.zuijdewijn and the second part after the at is fgga.leidenuniv.nl Your help would be much appreciated- thank you Jeanine91 (talk) 11:46, 19 April 2024 (UTC)

@Jeanine91: Wow, I'm very glad to hear that you find my work useful! I've only ever uploaded two pictures of the flower tribute at St Ann's square (1 and 2) and both of these can be used for commercial purposes already. As long as you follow attribution requirements then I'm more than happy for use to make use of either of these pictures in your book :) Thank you, odder (talk) 15:15, 19 April 2024 (UTC)

De-adminship warning

Dear Odder, I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your admin rights on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Aug-Sep 2024 by 12 September 2024, 23:59:59 UTC, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months, if you fail to do so you will automatically lose your admin rights along with any other advanced rights.

You can read the current de-admin policy here.

Thank you! -- CptViraj (talk) 19:54, 12 August 2024 (UTC) @CptViraj: Thanks for the notification. I didn't believe I would qualify for de-adminship as I have 95 suppressions over the past six months, but I do understand that the adminstats tool does not include these, so I'll sign on the page anyway. Thank you, odder (talk) 20:19, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

Hi!

Haven't talked to you in a while! How are you?

Are you still doing Wikipedia logos? :)

One will be necessary for the Tigre Wikipedia, language code tig.

Wikipedia: ዊኪፒድያ

The Free Encyclopedia: ሑር ኤንሳይክሉፒድያ

These texts were written by @Bbeshir, one of the main contributors to the Incubator.

Abyssinica SIL is probably a good font to use—it's under a free license, and it looks similar in style to the one used in the logo for the Wikipedia in Tigrinya, a related language (maybe it's even the same one, although I'm not 100% sure). Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 03:11, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

yes, it is the same font Bbeshir (talk) 03:46, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
@Amir E. Aharoni: Long time, no see! Still happy to help with new logos whenever I can :-) I can see that Abyssinica SIL hasn't got a bold version, so I used regular weight for both lines of File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-tig.svg — do let me know how it looks! CC'ing @Bbeshir so that he can review the file as a native speaker. odder (talk) 18:22, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
Looks good to me, thanks!
@Bbeshir, does it look good to you? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 19:50, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
@Amire80 it looks good, thank you @Odder Bbeshir (talk) 02:42, 23 November 2024 (UTC)

Wikilogo for Waale language

Hi @Odder, Could you please make a new Waale Wikipedia Logo, which only differs a few letters from the logo you've made for the Dagaare language?
I hope you still have the original file Wikipedia-logo-v2-dga.svg (date 13 July 2023) with actual letters, instead of the exported shapes.

DGA = Yɛŋ duor-mɔla bɔzie
WLX = Yɛŋ duohi-mɔla bɔjie

The request has been posted under the Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Illustration workshop#PNG to SVG request. The Waale language wiki is in its incubator stage.

@Groetjes, Peter: Now uploaded at File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-wlx.svg as visible above—hope it's fine! odder (talk) 23:18, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
Thank you very much, I think it's exactly what they've requested. ;) Groetjes, Peter (talk) 11:34, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Hi!

Can you perhaps take a look at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T370165 ? Something is stuck with the deployment there, and I'm not sure what it is.

Thanks! Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 18:49, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

@Amir E. Aharoni: This should now be done—@Martin Urbanec has kindly uploaded the new tag line file to Gerrit and deployed it to the live wiki this evening. odder (talk) 22:22, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

Hi!

Can you please make a logo for the Dargwa Wikipedia? The code is dar. It's in the Incubator.

"Wikipedia" is "Википедия" and "The Free Encyclopedia" is "Азадси гӀилмула табтар". I got it from @Saad Dargan.

Thanks! Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:06, 3 March 2025 (UTC)

@Amir E. Aharoni: How does File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-dar.svg look like? :) I followed the Russian Wikipedia logo and made the subline text italic but that can be easily changed to normal style if required. odder (talk) 18:52, 6 March 2025 (UTC)

Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe 2026

Hello! I noticed you're a bot operator, so I thought you might be interested in a hackathon we're organizing: the Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe 2026, on 13–14 March in Arnhem, Netherlands.

It's a two-day, technically oriented hackathon bringing together Wikimedians from the region. Whether you want to work on bot frameworks, tools, or other technical projects, this could be a great opportunity to collaborate with fellow developers. Registration closes mid-January or when full. Let me know if there are any questions. Hope to see you there! Daanvr (talk) 09:12, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

Good day!

I was told I could reach out to you regarding a logo request. A group of users is currently working to revive efforts to launch a new wiki in Southern Uzbek.

Back in 2018, a user created this logo, but the wording is not quite correct. I have double-checked it with a couple of native speakers, and they agree that the motto should instead read: ویکی‌پېدیا اېرکین اېنسکلاپېدی. It is written from right to left and is a more accurate rendering of "Wikipedia the free encyclopedia."

Would you be so kind as to help create a new logo? You could clearly label it as a new version so that the old one is preserved as well. We really appreciate your help! Nataev talk 17:31, 22 March 2026 (UTC)

@Nataev: I'll do this tomorrow, 26 March — apologies for the delayed response. odder (talk) 10:41, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
Great, thank you very much, and no problem at all! Nataev talk 13:33, 25 March 2026 (UTC)
@Nataev: There was a problem with File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-uzs.svg in that it's a raster (PNG) file embedded inside an SVG file rather than a true vector drawing. I couldn't therefore simply edit it but instead tried to replicate it as much as possible as File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-uzs-alt.svg — please let me know how it looks. odder (talk) 19:02, 26 March 2026 (UTC)
Thank you so much, it looks amazing! I really appreciate your help. I was wondering if there are any other fonts besides Nazli available for southern Uzbek. If so, could we experiment with those? Otherwise I'm happy with the logo as is. One native speaker mentioned that the current font is somewhat hard to read, although I don't personally see why. Nataev talk 15:37, 28 March 2026 (UTC)
@Nataev: I'm glad you like the logo. I'm afraid I don't know anything about fonts for languages written in Arabic script. Perhaps @Amir could help? He's normally the person that tells me what to do ;) odder (talk) 09:37, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
I'm going to write a bunch of stuff that I know, but feel free to ignore it because it's not completely specific.
I do think that in general, logos that are written in the same script should use the same font, unless there is a specific strong reason for this. In practice, this is not always the case, especially with the Arabic script: ary, ar, fa, skr, ur, pnb, sd, and ps logos all use different fonts (or maybe, in some cases, the same font, but with different styling). I think that it's not great and that the brand should look more uniform, but since it's already not like that, I won't argue too strongly against it.
I will mention that it will be great if at least:
  1. The font is under a Free license.
  2. The font is more in the "serif" style and not "sans serif".
The terms "serif" and "sans serif" are more appropriate for the Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic scripts, and they are artificial when discussing Arabic, but I'm not sure what other terms to use. Perhaps "Naskh", as opposed to "Kufic" or "rectilinear". The fonts in the ps and sd logos are very rectilinear and blocky, which makes them very different not just from other Arabic logos, but also from the logos of almost all other Wikipedia languages, which use a more elegant, bookish and "serif"-y style.
Also, it probably shouldn't be in the Nastaliq style, even if it's common in the part of the world where this language is spoken, because it's hard to write in the Nastaliq style in the limited horizontal space of the Wikipedia logos, but hey, if a designer finds a good solution for that, it would probably be good.
The font in the ary logo is probably in the Moroccan style, which is very far from where Uzbek is spoken. The font in the ar logo is probably associated specifically with the Arabic language, and I'm not sure that it's totally appropriate for other languages, although I might be wrong.
So I guess that it leaves us with the fonts used in fa, ur, skr, or pnb logos. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 16:11, 29 March 2026 (UTC)
... After some more thought and re-reading the discussion, I have something hopefully useful to add.
The file File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-uzs-alt.svg is definitely wrong because the font is not rendered correctly.
The file for Persian at File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-fa.svg is rendered well, and the same font can probably be used for uzs. Unfortunately, I don't know what font it is, but maybe @Huji or @Ebrahim know it? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 18:15, 30 March 2026 (UTC)
@Amir E. Aharoni: The font used in the Farsi logo appears to be BBC Nassim. This is the BBC variant of Nassim, a proprietary font created by Titus Nemeth. I'm happy to redraw the South Uzbek logo if we can find a better font for it. odder (talk) 08:31, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Google's Noto Naskh Arabic is in a similar style, it is Free, and it appears to be able to show a valid rendering of the name and the tagline. It's probably OK to try it. If the users like it, good. If not, I'm not sure what to do because I'm not so familiar with the current world of Free Arabic-script fonts. Maybe Scheherazade or Reem Kufi. Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 14:42, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
@Amir E. Aharoni: Thanks for the helpful pointer. Perhaps File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-uzs-alt-naskh.svg looks better now? @Nataev, how does this look to you? odder (talk) 15:27, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
The new version looks amazing! And at least one native speaker has confirmed the text is legible and correct. Thank you both for taking the time to help us out! We really appreciate it. Nataev talk 16:40, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
If the native speakers are happy about this, then I guess it can be moved to File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-uzs.svg.
Thanks, Odder! Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:01, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
@Amir E. Aharoni, @Nataev: I'm glad you both like the logo. I've moved the version using Noto Naskh Arabic to File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-uzs.svg. As mentioned above, that file was a raster graphic pasted into an SVG file rather than a true vector file, so there is very little lost there. odder (talk) 17:09, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Thank you! Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 17:29, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
