Zu meiner Vorgehensweise: Best practice (deutsch). Und es sei erwähnt, dass ich gleichartige und eher langweilige Änderungen mit einem Bot erledige. So manche in den Augen des Betrachters sinnlose Änderung einfacher Natur wird automatisch irgendwann wieder rückgängig gemacht, sinnvoll erscheinende oder immer wieder durch Dritte aus meiner Sicht eher unwichtige Änderungen werden von mir im Bot aufgenommen, so dass alle meine Bilder davon profitieren. |

Weekly highlight
- The Beta version of Abstract Wikipedia a new Wikimedia project which is language-independent, was launched last week. The project allows communities to build Wikipedia articles in their native language, which can be readily accessed by other users in their own languages. The wiki is powered by instructions from Wikifunctions and also based on structured content from Wikidata. Read more.
Updates for editors
- The Growth team is running an A/B test to evaluate a clearer, more user-friendly message that promotes account creation on wikis. Currently when logged-out mobile users begin editing, they see a jarring warning message that can feel abrupt and discouraging. This also presents temporary account editing as the default rather than encouraging account creation. The test is running on ten Wikipedias, including Arabic, French, Spanish and German. Read more.
- The Wikimedia Apps team is inviting feedback on how editing should work on the Wikipedia mobile apps. The discussion focuses on improving how users access editing tools when they tap "Edit". This is part of a broader effort to convert readers who develop an interest in editing, to access a more user-friendly pathway to start contributing.
View all 45 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, an issue where citation fetching from the large newspaper archive Newspapers.com was no longer working, due to a block in Citoid requests, has now been fixed.

User:XRay/Templates/Notes/Common/Howto
While I appreciate that you're trying to give readers some information on photography, having this template appear on all of the file pages for your photos is causing some problems with search - all of the text is indexed, causing your photos to all appear as results for searches like "long exposure" or "limbic system", even though the photos are not related to those keywords.
Would you mind adding class="navigation-not-searchable" to the information boxes you use on your file pages? This will exclude the text of those elements from MediaWiki search. Omphalographer (talk) 23:24, 30 March 2026 (UTC)

Why? Pleaes see what this tag says and what given category actually contains. Any text can be inscribed and depicted on images in this category. - Dear Unknown, the category is assigned to the text categories (for example text with 8 letters), and the suffix also matches the text categories. However, the content does not necessarily fit the category. -- XRay 💬 08:00, 6 April 2026 (UTC)
- I understand this template is appropriate in some other categories with the same suffix, e.g. in Category:Hello (text) where images truely depict text "Hello". In case of Category:Epitaphs (text) however the "(text)" suffix is there for regular disambigution purpose, meaning this category is for epitaphs that are (inscribed) texts, and not for different kinds of epitaphs that are sculptural works. See also category description in category header. The content in this category fits this description as far as I can see. Disambigution text in brackets probably can be something else, too. - Perhaps I should start with a personal note: I really don’t like replying to anonymous users. I never know if the message—which takes some effort on my part—will actually reach them. As for the inconsistencies, let’s consider two things:
- According to the categorization, Category Category:Epitaphs is an “Inscription”, meaning it’s already a text. At the same time, it is also a sculpture. That doesn’t quite fit. According to Wikidata epitaph (Q13578361), it is a tomb, i.e., a sculpture.
- Category Category:Epitaphs (text) is, according to the naming scheme and categorization, a text in the English language: Category:Images by English text. It is not just any text, but specifically “Epitaphs.” Hence the categorization in Category:Text with 8 letters. The Wikidata mapping epitaph (Q1772), on the other hand, refers to the actual text of the epitaph.
- So what should be done? The Wikidata entries, category names, and categorization must be clearly separated into sculpture and text (inscription). The category Category:Epitaphs (text) is reserved for photos containing the text “Epitaphs.” If none exist, it is superfluous. Unfortunately, I’m not particularly skilled in English, but I would split it into Category:Epitaphs and Category:Epitaph inscriptions (which fits with Category:Inscriptions by dedication). - I'm afraid new title "Epitaph inscriptions" isn't better than the previous one, and likely now there are more inconsistencies than before. First, texts in question, often in form of an inscription, are epitaphs (in relevant sense of the word), and so this title seems tautological. Second, it is probably inaccurate to describe all epitaph in the latter sense as inscriptions, even though English description for respective d:Q1772 item currently says so. While an epitaph (text) often is inscribed it necessarily isn't always. As per enwiki definition it is just "a short text honoring a deceased person". This category also includes several epitaph texts that are not inscribed.
- As for (previous) inconsistencies, please note that both the "English text" and "8 letters" category were added by the very same odd template. I resolved this inconsistency in the first place with the removal of this template. As for inscriptions parent category in Category:Epitaphs, yes, that was improper for epitaphs in the other sense (sculpture or other artwork) but that's not really related to the template used in the other category. In other words, this template did not and would not fit no matter in what way all inconsistencies mentioned so far are resolved. Also, categorization already was separated, you only renamed the category that is a separate category for texts.
- As for Commons conventions and as far as I can see, words in brackets are often used for disambiguation purpose, e.g. see examples in COM:DAB which I already referenced above. Just like in Wikipedia. So word "text" in brackets seemed and still seems to me as a clear disambiguation for given subject, at least more clear and less misleading than current category title. And as far as I can see, nothing forces us to add given template if it says "text" in brackets. Some other disambiguation could be used in brackets, maybe "short text" or "texts" in plural, but I'm not sure if these would be actually better than previous "text". ~2026-95803-6 (talk) 09:02, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- I can see, at least in part, that you're right. After looking around a bit, I found a category with a similar theme: Category:Ectopistes migratorius (texts). So, I'm renaming it to "(texts)". Updates for editors
- The CampaignEvents extension now includes a new group goal-setting feature, enabling organizers to set and track event goals such as the number of articles created and participating contributors in real time. Similarly, participants can work toward shared targets and see their collective impact as the event unfolds. The feature is now available on all Wikimedia wikis. Learn more in the documentation.
The new watchlist labels feature (announced in Tech News 2026-07) is now available via VisualEditor, the source editor, and the 'watchstar' (or watch link, for skins that don't have a star icon). Previously it was only possible to assign labels via EditWatchlist. In all three places it is a new field following the expiry field.- View all 23 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week. For example, the issue where talk pages on mobile with Parsoid are unusable after empty section headers, has now been fixed.
Updates for technical contributors
- The sub-referencing feature, which lets editors add details to an existing reference without duplicating it, will be gradually rolled out to more wikis later this year. Wikis using the Reference Tooltips gadget are encouraged to update their version (typically at MediaWiki:Gadget-ReferenceTooltips.js as shown here) to ensure compatibility. Other reference-related gadgets may also be affected.
- All Wikinews editions will be closed and switched to read-only mode on 4 May 2026. Content will remain accessible, but no new edits or articles can be added. This closure was approved by the Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation following extended discussions. Read more.
- The Action API has had several formats for requested output. One of them,
format=php, is being removed soon. Please ensure your scripts or bots use the JSON format. This removal should affect very few scripts and bots. - The Special:NamespaceInfo page now includes namespace aliases. For example "WP" for the "Project" ("Wikipedia") namespace on the German Wikipedia.

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2025 voting is open!

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
