Template:Cc-country-flags and pirate flag
Hi, the Template:Cc-country-flags is made for illustrating Creative Commons licences if I understand. Not for any subject needing flags. The pirate flag is not appropiate and maybe offensive... Damouns இ 07:40, 19 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Damouns, thanks for your message. While {{Cc-country-flags}} may have been originally intended for Creative Commons licensing contexts, in practice its use is not limited to that scope. It has been used across a wide range of pages on Wikimedia Commons, including many photographic campaigns such as Wiki Loves Ramadan or Wiki Loves Monuments, primarily as a visual aid to improve navigation and presentation.
- So this isn’t a case of it being used for “any subject needing flags,” but rather a broader, established usage pattern within campaign and community pages.
- Regarding the pirate flag, I understand the concern, but in this context it is being used symbolically and not with any intent to offend. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 17:56, 20 March 2026 (UTC)

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2025 voting is open!

Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
