Are there any frameworks or tools that could replace this file with a version that maintains the high graphical quality of the original, but permits granular editing (for example of facts like changing political boundaries, or developments in the subject matter, or corrections resulting from sourcing errors)? TheFeds 21:56, 12 March 2025 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)
@TheFeds: Not sure what you mean? Are you struggling with editing SVG files, in such case you can use Inkscape. BorysMapping (talk) 10:15, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
My concept was that this map had been created with a tool or framework of some sort, which queried and generated the political boundaries, the table and graph styles, etc., and allowed the user to not resort to manually drawing vectors in Inkscape. Without the practical ability to correct small errors, the images will gradually become less usable in Wikipedia articles, and might have to be editorially omitted or couched with limiting statements. TheFeds 20:27, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
@TheFeds I have downloaded, open and edited both files and there is not any difficulties with that;
If this is not what you mean you have to explain in another way. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:10, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
@Goran tek-en: I was attempting to use this as example to ask a broader question about how to keep maps with legends up to date, without having to raster edit a PNG, or use the SVG that appears to be an incomplete copy. I was hoping that someone had found or made a tool that takes scripted input like some form of markup, and lets a modified derivative version be made without necessarily being an accomplished image editor. As the image gets older, present reality may diverge from what is depicted, and (mainly) Wikipedia editors will have to decide whether to live with a 95% correct image in the article, or remove the image because it is 5% incorrect. If things like the base map (e.g. for boundaries and projection), colours, labels, overlays, etc. were in conveniently structured layers that could be individually edited, that might make such a task easier. I know that in an SVG editor, the individual path entities are editable, but this is both difficult and complicated for the average user. Maybe @Goldsztern (the SVG image's creator) was attempting a preliminary version of this, by creating a native vector version (they cited the base map and the data sources) that could at least be edited carefully in the future. I was hoping there might be a more advanced version somewhere that allowed a user without technical skill or a lot of time to see which fact corresponded to which vector object, and to change the characteristics. TheFeds 07:07, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
@TheFeds Thanks for explaining.
If we had a perfect world and everyone did everything in exact the same way maybe, maybe this would be possible. But here at commons (wikimedia) with so many different people involved I say, no way.
It's messy and we will always be behind with edits just like all books, educations etc are. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 17:20, 22 December 2025 (UTC)

File:Threshold of originality world map.svg content issue

Request
Please fix the colour shading of the en:Crimea part. Since the map's inception, it's in the shade given to Russia, but that's politically wrong. Virtually no state body outside of Russia's supporters recognise en:Crimea as legitimate part of Russia, despite its annexion claims. It must be in the shade given to en:Ukraine. Thanks! Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 05:23, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)
@Grand-Duc: But this map has nothing to do with politics to my understanding.

Confusing map

Article(s): Category:Melopsittacus undulatus (distribution maps) and elsewhere

Request
The dark blue (indicating the temperate zone) is much too dark, making it look like the main objective of the map (i.e., where Budgerigars occur), rather than just another climate zone. Please make it a much paler shade, comparable to the other climate zones in colour intensity (I don't have svg-editing software so can't do this myself). I'd suggest #80eecc for the new colour. Once done, I'll undertake to edit the keys on all the wikipedia pages the map is used on to clarify the new colour. - MPF (talk) 16:17, 19 October 2025 (UTC)

File:South Korea Postcode Map.svg transparency flattening request

Article(s): en:Postal codes in South Korea, ko:대한민국의 우편번호, ko:국가기초구역번호

Request
Hello! This file was originally a 'fake vector' file embedding a raster image. When vectorization was performed, the MediaWiki extension failed to render it properly and caused a 429 error. So I reverted it to the 'false vector' version. The true vector version, dated at 14:26, 29 November 2025, used multiple layers and transparent filters for coloring, I guess that's why the rendering has failed. Could someone please flatten the transparency (convert transparent overlaps into solid colors) and clean up the file so it renders correctly? I tried to do it myself but failed. I found that there were some missing in this map. Six countries including Luxembourg, the Republic of Ireland, Cyprus, Armenia, Burma and Cambodia, together with Greece, France, Greece, Russia, China, Vietnam and other countries, opposing the Iraq War. I suggest changing the colors of the six countries including Luxembourg, the Republic of Ireland, Cyprus, Armenia, Burma and Cambodia to the same blue color as those of Germany, France, Greece, Russia, China and Vietnam. Thanks. At the same time, Ukraine should be changed to gray, and the Solomon Islands and Rwanda should be changed to yellow like Japan. @Milenioscuro Additionally East Timor should be changed to gray and Vatican City, Liechtenstein should be changed to blue. The then Pope John Paul II clearly opposed the Iraq War and Liechtenstein maintains a high degree of consistency with Switzerland and Austria in defense and foreign policies, but East Timor has not yet made clear its attitude towards the Iraq War and is considered neutral for the time being. Also before 2006, Serbia and Montenegro were one country instead of two countries, but the bug in this SVG code has not been corrected, and the border between Serbia and Montenegro is still clearly visible. As in the 2003 map, this bug should be corrected and Serbia and Montenegro merged into one country, but the color is still blue. thanks. Boston Mayflower (talk) 21:31, 19 January 2026 (UTC)

Remove Somaliland from the maps

Somaliland does not officially recognize the State of Palestine, and the State of Palestine absolutely rejects Somaliland's existence and independence. They do not have diplomatic relations, so I am requesting that someone please remove Somaliland from both maps. Thank you. --Regioncalifornia (talk) 17:19, 30 December 2025 (UTC)
Graphist opinion(s)
As of now, only one country recognises Somaliland. Whereas File:Israel-somaliland_locator.svg is specifically about that topic, these maps are about a third country. Is it premature to update them when most countries still consider Somalia a single country? It's opening a can of worms to have to continually update this and other maps when separatists have different stands from their respective countries. cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 01:19, 31 December 2025 (UTC)

  • Please also think about how much of the information from the source map you want in this. Ones we have all what you want in we can make different version, with or without text, some text etc.
  • Could you please write the text from the two corners here, thanks.
Feedback, anything is fine, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 16:17, 10 March 2026 (UTC)
Wow, this looks like a great start! So excited that you're doing this. I'm pretty sure those areas (the hatched ones in the map) are in fact mangroves. (See this (recent) map: The Paranagua Estuarine Complex its extensive mangroves numerous fishing villages… )
Here is the title of the map from the top left corner:
Mappa da Bahia de Paranaguá, comprehendendo a entrada do Mar pequeno de Jguape:
Which means:
(Map of the Bay of Paranaguá, including the entrance to the small sea of Iguape:)
The text in the lower right is more involved:
Terra riquissima! Saudosos sítios!
Here's an English translation:
Frequented by ships and steamers from Chile, Montevideo, and Rio de Janeiro, this bay presents the most picturesque and enchanting view. While its winding coves, crowned with numerous islands, are surrounded on every side by high green mountain ranges where the finest timber abounds, where peccaries and jacús roam peacefully, and where game of every kind may be found. Rich tracts of valuable resources extend across the mountains above. Successive herds of cattle come down from the mountains to supply consumption. Ipecacuanha is found along the banks. In the clearings bananas ripen, pineapples swell, and tajos, mangaritos, cassava and yams flourish, along with peppers and tomatoes. Coffee, sugarcane, cotton, tobacco, and rice grow there with admirable luxuriance, and their cultivation yields good returns both to foreigners—North Americans, English, French, and Germans—and to the Brazilian people, peaceful and hospitable. There are orange and lemon trees in such abundance that the fruit rots on the trees. Fish and shrimp are caught by the thousands. The mangroves are laden with endless delicious oysters. A land of immense riches! Beloved places!

@Goran tek-en
Perhaps it has to do with the kind of coastline, beach vs something else? To be honest I’m not sure. Babbage (talk) 16:27, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
Ideally, yes. I am very interested in the author of the book from which the map is taken (en:Julius Platzmann.) I believe it might be hand-drawn and lettered by him so it is of great interest to me. There are clues to his residency and previous exploration of the area by others embedded in the map. I can edit SVGs so if it’s too time-consuming for you to do all the transcription I am happy to help with that. @Goran tek-en: Babbage (talk) 16:26, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
@Babbage
It would help me if you could write all the rivers names here so I can copy. Start top left downwards etc, I know it will not be exact order but I will find.
When you have this much text in a map always hard and important to get them to fit and extend in the correct direction when viewed.
  • Should this map be in Portuguese or English, or do you want both? Depending on that, write it here, thanks it will help.
--please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 14:57, 13 March 2026 (UTC)
@Babbage I'm trying to group different types of texts together based on uppercase or lowercase, size and there placing.
1. Top right: BARRA CANANEA, this type is placed on the ocean in several places, what are the names of?
2. Same type is also on the mangrove places, are they names of those areas?
3. In several places there are small texts like P. Conaas (just to the right of Island Mel). What does the P stand for, what are they names of?
4. Same with M. Meia (just below 3.)? --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:50, 13 March 2026 (UTC)
I think the first version should be in Portuguese. I would be happy to do the English translation myself, if possible. Am I correct in assuming that the text in the SVG will not be turned into <path>s but kept as <text> and/or <tspan> elements? If so I know enough about SVG to carry out a translation. (I’d use Inkscape, probably.)
1. A Barra is a sandbar. (Incidentally, Cananea is now spelled Cananéia.)
2. I think the hatched areas are sandbars or tidal flats; they may emerge at low tide.
3. P. = ponta — A point or headland jutting into the water — a navigational landmark.
4. M. = morro — A hill or mound, usually a visible high point sailors could use as a reference when lining up channels.
I’m still not 100% sure about whether the hatched areas are mangroves, but I believe it's more likely that the cartographer was mapping shallow areas, not vegetation. It’s quite likely that there were mangroves all over the map, but I’m not sure they’re explicitly represented.
I’m working on the name list and will get it to you as soon as I can. Thanks again!

@Babbage Thanks for all your important info, here are some more questions.
Question image
A.
Is one a cross with all four legs the same length, what is it?
The other lines, do they symbolize a village or something else?
B.
Whats this, anchor point or what?
C.
Are those rocks sticking up?
D.
Road? --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:10, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
A. Is one a cross with all four legs the same length, what is it?
The other lines, do they symbolize a village or something else? My guess is that it’s either a misplaced "4" or a symbol for a church. But it seems like an odd place for one, and I don't see the symbol elsewhere. So I'm not sure.
B.
Whats this, anchor point or what? Yes, I think it's an anchorage.
C.
Are those rocks sticking up? Yes, I think so. They are warnings that there are rocks near the island.
D.
Road? Almost certainly. You can see above there's another one called Estrada da Graziosa. Estrada means "street" or "road". And here's what has taken me so long to respond: I have transcribed all the places on the map into an SVG file that I hope will be of use to you: https://ruphus.com/platzmann/works-original/platzmann1872bai/map/render-list.html This page loads the SVG and my digitization of the labels, which are from this SVG: https://ruphus.com/platzmann/works-original/platzmann1872bai/map/labels.svg Please let me know if there's anything else I can do @Goran tek-en
Babbage (talk) 03:44, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
@Goran tek-en
Update! I have done some research and now realize that a "barra" isn’t just a sandbar. It came to mean the entrance to bodies of water where sandbars commonly built up. So in the map, there are four main "entrances" or "inlets" to the Paranaguá Bay (Bahia): Barra de Superaguhy, Barra do Norte, Barra de Paranaguá, and Barra Ibopetuba ou do Sul. There is also a Barra Cananea in the top right corner. Babbage (talk) 21:39, 16 March 2026 (UTC)
@Babbage Just a quick one. I have downloaded the "content" on your links but there are some restrictions so I can't download them as svg files etc.
But you don't have to fix something I have the content, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 11:50, 17 March 2026 (UTC)
Hmm, I took a look and all the permissions, etc seemed to be in order. Odd. I did add this plaintext file of the labels if that’s helpful: https://ruphus.com/platzmann/works-original/platzmann1872bai/map/labels.txt Babbage (talk) 13:28, 17 March 2026 (UTC)

@Babbage: I have now added all of the information for this map and there is a lot of information.

  • I have got the impression that you would like this svg map to be as close as possible to the original source. If that is so then I suggest we make at least two versions; one as like as possible and one which would be like we do create maps nowadays and here at commons. There is a big difference in the usage between the original paper map and the digital we create here at commons and which can be used anywhere. I might also have to enlarge the map in px so that I can use text sizes that will be readable when the map is viewed at 100%.
  • Please give me your thoughts on this, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 11:53, 18 March 2026 (UTC)
@Goran tek-en: Very exciting!
Yes I agree that two versions is the way to go. Incidentally, I have just begun the process of proofreading the OCR of the book the map is from on Wikisource, so the Wikisource version of the book might be one good destination for the original-style map. I might make a derived version with content relevant to the book (where the author lived, nearby settlements…). I can think of many articles that could benefit from reusing the SVG map, either in full or in derivative form (for instance, en:Superagui, en:History of Paraná, etc., etc). The original style could also be used in the en:Julius Platzmann article. Any sizing decisions are up to you. Babbage (talk) 15:04, 18 March 2026 (UTC)
@Babbage In this draft can you tell me what the blue names are naming. Some of them look like island some something else, thanks. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 14:26, 20 March 2026 (UTC)

Maleques  - I am quite flummoxed by this. It doesn't seem to exist in Openstreetmap.
Pedras Brancas - yes, white rocks. https://maps.app.goo.gl/KUn3ysP5Hef5xm6CA
Guamiranga - your reading is correct. An island.
Pedras near I. Cotinga - Yes, rocks. https://maps.app.goo.gl/RsSXq3M5sN6yvAgU8 (there was a famous shipwreck nearby.)
Lage - I think this is some sort of rock outcroppping.
Teixeira should be Ilha Teixeira, I missed the I. on the left side of the island.
Itapema - That's a rock. (In Tupí: "itá / ita = “stone, rock” pema / pemã")
Sacco da Tarautaca - a cove
Lazareto  - small islet, now known as Isla das Cobras https://g1.globo.com/pr/parana/podcast/pod-parana/noticia/2023/11/03/podparana-153-conheca-a-historia-da-ilha-das-cobras-espaco-que-foi-hospital-de-quarentena-e-casa-de-veraneio-de-governadores.ghtml
As for the font, I believe this map was hand-lettered. Platzmann mentions having copied a map of the area in his book, so he may have derived this map from that one. He was known to hand-letter entire books. Babbage (talk) 22:47, 20 March 2026 (UTC)

@Babbage I didn't explain enough, sorry. I would have different colors for the ocean and the barras, I'm just asking about the texture of those. Haven't I posted this before:
---- Those drafts are PNG versions of the original SVG file I'm working in and will upload to commons.
Those drafts are shown for proofreading only.
Is this not what you wanted?
You should be aware of that in order to achieve this I had to convert all text to outline so unfortunately translating this twill mean I will have to do it, as I know what I have done. Also the svg file will be rather heavy in px due to text to outline and the structures of the ocean and the tidal flats.
I will start with the other version of this map in which text will be text. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 14:39, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
@Goran tek-en my apologies. Babbage (talk) 15:08, 31 March 2026 (UTC)
@Babbage NO, I didn't mean it like that, I was kind of asking myself, sorry for misunderstanding. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 16:10, 31 March 2026 (UTC)

Help optimizing code of Election map

Article(s): en:1788–89 United States presidential election

Request
A little while back I uploaded two election maps for the 1788-1789 and 1792 US presidential election show how electors cast there second vote as at this time each elector had two vote and all electors cast one for George Washington in both elections however I made these images in a pretty crappy SVG editor so they came out with some inconsistency with other united state election maps. more recently I taught myself how to edit the code of SVGs and I optimized the the 1792 map to be more consistent but the 1788-1789 map is far more complicated and different from other election maps so I don't think I can do the same with it due to my inexperience, so I would like a more experienced Graphist to do it instead PharaohCrab (talk) 18:53, 21 March 2026 (UTC)

Christian nationalism in the United States map

Article(s): en:Christian nationalism in the United States

I would like to request a map similar to this map presented in Axios detailing the prevalence of Christian nationalism in the United States. The data from PRRI itself can be found here. --BootsED (talk) 00:29, 22 March 2026 (UTC)

@BootsED: File:Template_map_of_US_states_and_District_of_Columbia.svg is a template to automatically convert a series of values for the US states and D.C. into a choropleth – instructions. cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 14:38, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
Vote percentage received by Pat Buchanan in the 2000 US presidential election by state or territory
@BootsED: I was going to make you the map but the table in Appendix A
  1. Has five columns which column is wanted?
  2. Is an image if you can type it out similar to
then I can make something similar to this thumbnail. cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 18:40, 1 April 2026 (UTC)
Thank you @Cmglee! I think the simplest way is to combine the "Adherent" and "Sympathizer" columns as the numerator and have the remaining three serve as the denominator out of 100%. The Axios map is a good example of what I was thinking of, so it would have a "US overall 32%" percentage on top along with a description on it saying it combines the two "Adherent" and "Sympathizer" columns. I would suggest looking at Figure 11 in the PPRI data, which has a map that does exactly this (they use a cool green to blue color scheme). You can also check my numbers below with it as it is interactive since I might have messed one or two up.
I think this is correct (I added D.C.):

✓ Done
Thanks, @BootsED: how does this look? cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 14:52, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
Wow! This looks perfect! Thank you so much! BootsED (talk) 15:10, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
Ok, so one small thing. Would it be possible to say "from PRRI's 2025 American Values Atlas" instead of listing the url itself? The url could change in the future so this would help future-proof the map. BootsED (talk) 15:18, 3 April 2026 (UTC)
✓ Done and you're welcome. Please click shift-refresh to load the update. cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 01:40, 4 April 2026 (UTC)

✓ Done Added South Sudan border from file:world_map_nations.svg as the base map was updated in a non-conventional way, its update was missed. Thanks for reporting the oversight, @LaundryPizza03: cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 15:15, 5 April 2026 (UTC)

Update NUTS maps

Article(s): Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics

Request
Our svg maps for the Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) regions of Europe need updating, as to include new candidate countries for EU membership. Specifically, the NUTS regions for Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine need to be added (details on each are included in the linked articles). A couple details in the NUTS 2 map also need fixing, as the shading for Norway is broken and the shading for the Caspian sea is different than other seas and oceans. I tried asking about this in the file talk page, but haven't received responses, so wanted to ask the workshop about updating it. Thanks in advance. --Grnrchst (talk) 13:35, 3 April 2026 (UTC)

Annotated Hello, World photo

Article(s): en:Hello,_World_(NASA), Artemis II

Request
Can someone please render an annotated globe showing landmasses and optionally national boundaries with the same orientation and distance as the Hello, World photograph?
It might be even better to embed into the SVG a cropped, low-resolution and perhaps muted bitmap of the image under the outlines so that readers can easily identify what countries and cities are depicted in the photograph. Thanks in advance --cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 14:15, 4 April 2026 (UTC)
