Map is unmaintainable by editors who might wish to correct details

Article(s): wikipedia:en:Law#Legal_systems

Are there any frameworks or tools that could replace this file with a version that maintains the high graphical quality of the original, but permits granular editing (for example of facts like changing political boundaries, or developments in the subject matter, or corrections resulting from sourcing errors)? Graphist opinion(s)
@TheFeds: Not sure what you mean? Are you struggling with editing SVG files, in such case you can use Inkscape. BorysMapping (talk) 10:15, 9 July 2025 (UTC)
My concept was that this map had been created with a tool or framework of some sort, which queried and generated the political boundaries, the table and graph styles, etc., and allowed the user to not resort to manually drawing vectors in Inkscape. Without the practical ability to correct small errors, the images will gradually become less usable in Wikipedia articles, and might have to be editorially omitted or couched with limiting statements. TheFeds 20:27, 20 October 2025 (UTC)
@TheFeds I have downloaded, open and edited both files and there is not any difficulties with that;
If this is not what you mean you have to explain in another way. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 15:10, 21 December 2025 (UTC)
@Goran tek-en: I was attempting to use this as example to ask a broader question about how to keep maps with legends up to date, without having to raster edit a PNG, or use the SVG that appears to be an incomplete copy. I was hoping that someone had found or made a tool that takes scripted input like some form of markup, and lets a modified derivative version be made without necessarily being an accomplished image editor. As the image gets older, present reality may diverge from what is depicted, and (mainly) Wikipedia editors will have to decide whether to live with a 95% correct image in the article, or remove the image because it is 5% incorrect. If things like the base map (e.g. for boundaries and projection), colours, labels, overlays, etc. were in conveniently structured layers that could be individually edited, that might make such a task easier. I know that in an SVG editor, the individual path entities are editable, but this is both difficult and complicated for the average user. Maybe @Goldsztern (the SVG image's creator) was attempting a preliminary version of this, by creating a native vector version (they cited the base map and the data sources) that could at least be edited carefully in the future. I was hoping there might be a more advanced version somewhere that allowed a user without technical skill or a lot of time to see which fact corresponded to which vector object, and to change the characteristics. TheFeds 07:07, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
@TheFeds Thanks for explaining.
If we had a perfect world and everyone did everything in exact the same way maybe, maybe this would be possible. But here at commons (wikimedia) with so many different people involved I say, no way.
It's messy and we will always be behind with edits just like all books, educations etc are. --please ping me-- Goran tek-en (talk) 17:20, 22 December 2025 (UTC)
  • @Goran and TheFeds: -- there is a new class of templates that can handle this and make it easier to update without SVG editing (see this version I extracted with Claude Code and the template: here -- you could create an updated individual page like that if you wanted, Sadads (talk) 19:20, 23 May 2026 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing this out—{{Choropleth map}} seems very promising as a way of addressing the editability of the previous images while still retaining high-quality graphical presentation. I might see what I can do with that particular example—but that shouldn't preclude any interested editor from getting to it first! TheFeds 21:09, 23 May 2026 (UTC)

To begin with, I question as to whether this "alternate history" image is in scope. Some hypothetical political scenarios like en:Hypothetical partition of Belgium, en:United Ireland, and en:Korean reunification are notable, but there is nothing to suggest any notability for "all separatist movements gain independence".

I found that there were some missing in this map. Six countries including Luxembourg, the Republic of Ireland, Cyprus, Armenia, Burma and Cambodia, together with Greece, France, Greece, Russia, China, Vietnam and other countries, opposing the Iraq War. I suggest changing the colors of the six countries including Luxembourg, the Republic of Ireland, Cyprus, Armenia, Burma and Cambodia to the same blue color as those of Germany, France, Greece, Russia, China and Vietnam. @Milenioscuro Additionally East Timor should be changed to gray and Vatican City, Liechtenstein should be changed to blue. The then Pope John Paul II clearly opposed the Iraq War and Liechtenstein maintains a high degree of consistency with Switzerland and Austria in defense and foreign policies, but East Timor has not yet made clear its attitude towards the Iraq War and is considered neutral for the time being. Also before 2006, Serbia and Montenegro were one country instead of two countries, but the bug in this SVG code has not been corrected, and the border between Serbia and Montenegro is still clearly visible. As in the 2003 map, this bug should be corrected and Serbia and Montenegro merged into one country, but the color is still blue. thanks. Boston Mayflower (talk) 21:31, 19 January 2026 (UTC)

Hi Goran tek-en. By rtl, I meant right-to-left - ie Arabic is written this way, the opposite of English. Help optimizing code of Election map

A little while back I uploaded two election maps for the 1788-1789 and 1792 US presidential election show how electors cast there second vote as at this time each elector had two vote and all electors cast one for George Washington in both elections however I made these images in a pretty crappy SVG editor so they came out with some inconsistency with other united state election maps. more recently I taught myself how to edit the code of SVGs and I optimized the the 1792 map to be more consistent but the 1788-1789 map is far more complicated and different from other election maps so I don't think I can do the same with it due to my inexperience, so I would like a more experienced Graphist to do it instead PharaohCrab (talk) 18:53, 21 March 2026 (UTC)

There's a few omissions of smaller territories, including the Channel Islands, which are not listed in the source list. That said, weirdly there were a number of territories that are listed there that weren't on the map, which I have added. If ChatGPT is freely available in the Channel Islands, Curacao, the Marshall Islands, and other remaining areas, it may be better to hide their circles rather than imply they are separately listed. Spelling issues in image (Greecemap)

Article(s): en:History, a number of other language wiki pages

Request
Essentially, there are spelling errors in the English Greecemap.svg. I first raised this issue over at the help desk. The original image was translated into Russian and converted to and svg, which was then used for both an English and an Italian translation. Comparing the original .gif and .svg English files you can clearly see a number of issues. I'm pretty sure there has been a translation issue back from Russian, as the following places/regions have been changed:
  • Mt Olympus → M Olimpus
  • Thessaly → Tessaly
  • Patroe → Patras
  • Marathan → Marathon
  • Thasos → Tasos
  • Athos → M Athos
  • Chois → Chios
The left is the .gif spelling, the right is the .svg spelling. Could someone please help fix any spelling errors, and double check there aren't others? I couldn't figure out how to edit the svg. Also, if anyone knows Italian/Russian, can you confirm the places/regions are spelt correctly in their respective images?
JordyGrey (talk) 01:25, 27 May 2026 (UTC)
I think in the original map there are some errors. E.g. "Marathan" i imagine should be "Marathon" and "Chalcdice" should be Chalcidice.
Do we want to keep fidelity with original source (with related errors) or correct them? Sette-quattro (talk) 19:17, 4 June 2026 (UTC)
Could we remove the errors from both the original, and the new ones? Like you said, the original has a couple of problems, as do the reproductions, so this is probably a good opportunity to fix the errors and standardise them that way? JordyGrey (talk) 23:11, 4 June 2026 (UTC)
I would propose to stay stich to the sourece, and then use the "SVG translate" tool (https://svgtranslate.toolforge.org) to create the correct version of the map. I already tried and it works. I will upload the final version so we can then make the 'correct' version and also translate it in other languages. Sette-quattro (talk) 14:24, 11 June 2026 (UTC)
I just looked at your upload File:Classical Greece Map - USMA.svg and there are a few remaining corrections.
  1. "Sea of Marma" should be "Sea of Marmara" or better yet "Propontis". (Sea of Marmara is I think a post-classical name.)
  2. "Sea of Crete" should be "Cretan Sea" to match the other seas' names.
  3. "Patroe" should be "Patrae" (the Latin version of the ancient Greek, matching the other cities' names) or else "Patras" (the modern English version of the Greek name, matching Athens's and Corinth's names).
  4. "Thermopyloe" should be "Thermopylae".
  5. "Paleste" should be "Palaeste".
  6. "Chois" should be "Chios".
Another curiosity is the names of islands ending in -ος is given in their transliterated Greek form rather than the Latinate form ending in -*us* ("Lesbos" rather than "Lesbus") as most of the land toponyms are ("Artemisium" rather than "Artemision" but "Argos" instead of "Argus"). This is, however, relatively common in English ("Mykonos" rather "Myconus" is typical). GPinkerton (talk) 15:16, 11 June 2026 (UTC)
With this link you can change the texts: https://svgtranslate.toolforge.org/File:Classical_Greece_Map_-_USMA.svg

So this is all sorted then :) ? JordyGrey (talk) 23:24, 11 June 2026 (UTC)
Nearly. @Sette-quattro: the newer version has "Cretean" rather than the correct "Cretan". There is a curious mix of typefaces in the place names; some are a serif typeface, others in a sans-serif one. That should be fixed. I am also thinking Latin "Peloponnesus" should probably be Anglicized to "Peloponnese" to match e.g. "Thrace", "Thessaly", etc. (rather than Latin "Thracia", "Thessalia", etc.). GPinkerton (talk) 17:02, 12 June 2026 (UTC)
I see typeface correctly, they should all be sans serif. It could be that youa re opening the non rendered svg and therefore if you don't have the font installed on your os you are not able to see it.
For the spelling, feel free to fix it using the tool https://svgtranslate.toolforge.org/File:Classical_Greece_Map_-_USMA.svg Sette-quattro (talk) 16:28, 18 June 2026 (UTC)
Just checking in again.
I'm sure whatever has been done in the new version will be fine. I'm just wondering, should the old image (svg) be removed or have it noted somewhere that a superior option is available? The last thing we need is for people to accidentally use the old, wrong version haha. Did I miss that somewhere on the page? Commons filepages are a bit overwhelming with all of their information
Thanks, JordyGrey (talk) 05:11, 14 July 2026 (UTC)

  • The U.S. did not organize or support any coup d'état attempts Indonesia, and Malaysia has never experienced a coup d'état attempt since its independence in 1957, and that is why they both need to be colored in gray. In Indonesia, the only coup d'état attempts were the en:APRA coup d'état in 1950, which was crushed by the Indonesian military, and the en:30 September Movement, which was a coup d'état attempt by the Communist Party of Indonesia and their supporters in the Indonesian military in 1965, which was crushed by the anti-communist general Suharto. --Kurcke (talk) 08:36, 16 June 2026 (UTC)

Request
These Honolulu Rail Transit (en:Skyline (Honolulu)) maps need to be updated. The metro line of the Honolulu Metro was extended to Kahauiki on 16 October 2025. All these maps are widely used in many Wikipedia articles about the Honolulu Metro. That is why they need to be updated. Hi! Could someone please fix the issue with the SVG file? I would like to use this map in the Hungarian Wikipedia but it seems it has some errors that prevent it from loading. Thanks in advance! --D97v (talk) 19:12, 7 July 2026 (UTC)

D97v, there was an error in the xmlns:i line, in which I've added a generic adobe url. There's still a thumbnail issue but I'm hoping that's a caching issue. CMD (talk) 02:14, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
There are so many insets that it is unclear what countries they are supposed to represent. How about adding their two-letter country codes in a vacant corner of their boxes? cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 20:40, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
Thanks for the help, now everything works well!
The names of those islands can now be found in the Title part of the Object properties. They are, by the way, the independent countries and dependent territories in Oceania, represented by one or two islands, usually the biggest and/or where the capital is located: Cook Islands, Niue and Tokelau next to NZ, then French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna (both FR territories), American Samoa (US) and Pitcairn Islands (UK) together as the dependent territories and after that the independent countries: Tuvalu, Tonga, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Samoa (next to them on the left it's Micronesia) and Nauru. Separately, there is Palau, Guam (US) and the Northern Mariana Islands (US) too in that part of the map. Under Indonesia there's Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, both Australian territories like the Norfolk Island in the bottom left corner where Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia (FR) and Bougainville (now an autonomous territory of PNG but soon to be independent) can also be found. I'll see how the map looks in the article and make some changes in the future if needed. D97v (talk) 08:07, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
