If you want to request administrator help, please post at Administrators' noticeboard.
There are currently 171 administrators on Commons.

Technical
Administrators are users with the technical ability on Wikimedia Commons to:
- delete and undelete images and other uploaded files, and to view and restore deleted versions
- delete and undelete pages, and to view and restore deleted revisions
- protect and unprotect pages, and to edit admin-protected pages
- block and unblock users, individual IP addresses and IP address ranges
- edit less-restricted interface messages (see also Commons:Interface administrators)
- rename files
- add and remove user groups
- configure Upload Wizard campaigns
- delete and undelete specific log entries and revisions of pages
- import pages from other wikis
- merge the history of pages
- modify abuse filters
- not create redirects from source pages when moving pages
- override the spoofing checks and title or username blacklist
- send a message to multiple users at once (massmessage)
- use higher limits in API queries
These are collectively known as the admin tools.
Community role
Administrators are experienced and trusted members of the Commons community who have taken on additional maintenance work and have been entrusted with the admin tools by public consensus/vote. Different admins have different areas of interest and expertise, but typical admin tasks include determining and closing deletion requests, deleting copyright violations, undeleting files where necessary, protecting Commons against vandalism, and working on templates and other protected pages. Of course, some of these tasks can be done by non-admins as well.
Administrators are expected to understand the goals of this project, and be prepared to work constructively with others towards those ends. Administrators should also understand and follow Commons' policies, and where appropriate, respect community consensus.
Apart from roles which require use of the admin tools, administrators have no special editorial authority by virtue of their position, and in discussions and public votes their contributions are treated in the same way as any ordinary editor. Some admins may become more influential, not due to their position as such, but from the personal trust they may have gained from the community.
Suggestions for administrators
Please read Commons:Guide to adminship.
Removal of administrator rights
Under the de-admin policy, administrator rights may be revoked due to inactivity or misuse of sysop tools.
In a de-admin request, normal standards for determining consensus in an RfA do not apply. Instead, "majority consensus" should be used, whereby any consensus to demote of higher than 50% is sufficient to remove the admin.
Apply to become an administrator
All intending administrators must go through this process and submit themselves to RFA, including all ex-administrators who are seeking to return to their previous role.
First, go to Commons:Administrators/Howto and read the information there. Then come back here and make your request in the section below.
- After clicking the appropriate button and creating the subpage, copy the link to the subpage, e.g. "Commons:Administrators/Requests/Username", edit Commons:Administrators/Requests and paste it in at the top of the section, then put it in double curly brackets (e.g. {{Commons:Administrators/Requests/Username}}) to transclude it. Request a watchlist notice at MediaWiki talk:WatchlistNotice, or edit MediaWiki:WatchlistNotice to put up one if you are an administrator.
- If someone else nominated you, please accept the nomination by stating "I accept" or something similar, and signing below the nomination itself. The subpage will still need to be transcluded by you or your nominator.

Voting
Any registered user may vote here although those who have few or no previous edits may not be fully counted. It is preferable you give reasons for both Support and Oppose votes as this will help the closing bureaucrat in their decision. Greater weight is given to an argument, with supporting evidence if needed, than to a simple vote.
Promotion normally requires at least 75% in favour, with a minimum of 8 support votes. Votes from unregistered users are not counted. However, the closing bureaucrat has discretion in judging community consensus, and the decision will not necessarily be based on the raw numbers. Bureaucrats may, at their discretion, extend the period of an RfA if they feel that it will be helpful in better determining community consensus.
Neutral comments are not counted in the vote totals for the purposes of calculating pass/fail percentages. However, such comments are part of the discussion, may persuade others, and contribute to the closing bureaucrat's understanding of community consensus.

Hello everyone, I am Shaan Sengupta and I am here to apply for adminship. I joined Wikimedia Commons over 3 years ago and have been consistently active on the project. I have been contributing in whatever capacity I can, which includes, but not limited to, file uploads, file moves, CSD & DR nominations, patrolling, license reviews, anti-vandalism, regular maintenance, etc.
A significant part of my work, be it uploads or license reviews, is on GODL-India and other India-related files, but I also occasionally contribute (as LR) in other areas like EU Audiovisual, YouTube, etc. Just to clarify, my other works like patrolling, file moves, anti-vandalism, etc is not limited to this area but covers the entirety of the project. I am also active at various Administrators noticeboards, Village pumps and pages like COM:RFR, COM:LRR, etc.
Overtime, there have been instances where I have felt the need for admin tools, mostly while dealing with VOAs. I also have a good understanding of the core principles of the project and am very much in line with the policies and guidelines. That said, I am very much open to continue learning and seeking advice from others wherever necessary. If it matters, I have ~30,700 edits and am fluent in multiple Indian languages (Hindi and various Bihari languages) and English. I also have a fair understanding of other Indian languages like Marathi, Gujarati and Nepali. Thank you. Shaan SenguptaTalk 06:34, 29 June 2026 (UTC)

Support Reliable and competent contributor, no issue. Yann (talk) 11:37, 29 June 2026 (UTC)
Support I see them giving comments actively at COM:RFR despite them not being an admin here. We do have a backlog at COM:RFR as not many admins actively deal with requests for rights and applicants may need to wait for a relatively long time for their request to be processed. Hence, I think that their assistance would be beneficial to the community. Jianhui67 T★C 09:01, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
Support Good luck! Deltaspace42 (talk) 10:37, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
Support I think Yann said what I think of Shaan Sengupta. I'm also sure that his competency in Indian languages is a plus for the pool of administrators. Whyiseverythingalreadyused (t · c · he/him) 13:00, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
Support just a few days ago, I was thinking of nominating Shaan. Fabulous candidate to join the team, and as Jianhui67 says, Shaan's help at RFR is extraordinary. signed, Aafi (guesthouse) 06:41, 1 July 2026 (UTC)

Support I've seen them around. I can't recall anything that wowed me and I can't recall any red flags. However, enough people whose judgement I trust are supporting above that I feel comfortable supporting myself. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 07:37, 4 July 2026 (UTC)

Comments
- I think one of Commons' biggest problems is deletion request backlog. Would you like to comment on a few open deletion request from 2025? --Krd 09:10, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah, I agree on this. And I acknowledge that my DR participation is limited. The reason is that all my time here is mostly consumed with uploads, categorisation, SD noms, ANs, RFR etc. But I am open to help where I can. I'll try to find some now. Shaan SenguptaTalk 10:14, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- If most of you time is already used, what exactly do you intend to do as admin, and what is going to fall behind? Krd 10:14, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
- Right now what I can do is, leave my comment at RFR or ANs, for example. If I have the tool, I can take a call and decide them myself. This will help save time of other volunteers. Nothing that I am currently doing will fall behind. I have spent more time and contributed more in 2026 than I did in 2025. And my active time is and will continue to increase. - I won't vote for an admin due to personal political opinions but I heard that Commons was in need of them so I note here that I don't oppose it, as an euphemism. (A)mically, Aristoxène (talk) 12:54, 1 July 2026 (UTC)
- Nobody sees here an issue, but I do. In English Wikipedia Shaan Sengupta was topic banned from Indian and Pakistanian articles. He requested lifting topic ban here and it was declined. On the same day, when the request to lift the topic ban was declined, Shaan Sengupta requested indefinite block in en.wiki for himself and it was granted. The topic ban was not mentioned in the current RfA. Taivo (talk) 20:24, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- Taivo and everyone, I would try to explain this in as few words as possible. First, the ban was proposed for India related articles only, but back then enwiki had WP:ARBIPA which covered sanctions related to India so the ban was extended to the whole contentious topic area. Second, if you see the request to lift the topic ban, the most vocal opposer (ZDRX), is now himself blocked globally, with an exemption from home wiki (i.e. enwiki), for the same thing he accused me, i.e. POV pushing and biased editing. Maybe someone would think otherwise, but I think the oppose from him was more bcoz of our political leanings (BJP vs Congress), something we openly mentioned on our userpages. Anyways, I think all of that is past me. This TBan was imposed back in November 2024 and will now live forever (bcoz I am not returning to enwiki, explained later). Since then, much water has flown under the bridge. I tried to work in whatever areas I could, then requested a review to see if the enwiki community has regained even some confidence in me. It was evident that they haven't, whatever be the argument. So I decided to leave the project. And I have left it forever. My work here has been totally different. And I am proud to say that it has been appreciated and no such thing has ever been seen in my edits. Now since most of my work here is covers the same area, i.e. India related things, I would say that if the enwiki ban reduces the trust of the community in me, please let me know. I would leave this project and permanently retire from all of WMF platforms. Because after all these years, one thing that I have learnt is that this is a collaborative project and if my fellow contributors don't trust me, then it is not the place for me to be. Thank you. - Thanks for your honest answer. I still support you as admin, but you probably should be very carefully when dealing about such files on Commons. I would suggest that you avoid to take decisions on controversial issues in this domain (e.g. scope about India and Pakistan subjects). Regards, Yann (talk) 08:13, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your continued trust. FWIW, I was in such a situation just last month. Maybe this can help everyone evaluate me then vs now. Shaan SenguptaTalk 08:54, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
