Q. We have a book completely transcribed and transcluded on Wikisource. Why is it not available in the app?

A. You need to add the bibliographic metadata of the book strictly following bibliographic data model on Wikidata. The following three parameters needs to be mandatory fulfilled on Wikidata to be displayed in the app.

1. Presence of Wikidata item of the completed book edition;
2. Sitelink with corresponding transcluded page on Wikisource along with proofread or validation badges;
3. Statements with only one Wikisource Index Page Url (P1957).

Q. I can't see a thumbnail of a book in the app. What should I do to generate thumbnail?

A. The thumbnails can be generated in either of the following two ways.

1. image (P18) added to the Wikidata item of the edition (cover image recommended); or,
2. title page number (P4714) added as a qualifier to the value of document file on Wikimedia Commons (P996); or,
3. image (P18) added as a property to the item of author(s) (image of the author).

Q. Which languages are there in the app? How can I add a new languages?

A. There are 28 languages, in which you can find books in the app. They are Arabic, Assamese, Bangla, Breton, Catalan, Czech, Danish, English, French, Gujarati, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Javanese, Kannada, Malay, Malayalam, Marathi, Polish, Punjabi, Spanish, Sundanese, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Tulu, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

To add a new language, you can request here. But, the languages will only be added, if the mandatory criteria, mentioned before, are fulfilled.

Q. How are the books categorized in the app?

A. The books are categorized based on their literary forms which are stored on Wikidata. The literary forms, which are available for categorization in the apps are:

1. Novels (including novellas)
2. Plays
3. Poetry (including poetry collections)
4. Short Stories (including short story collections)
5. Narration
6. Essays (including essay collection)
7. Dictionaries
8. Encyclopedias

It is important that the Wikidata statements for the literary forms are stored in the items for literary works (Q7725634) and not in the items for version, edition or translation (Q3331189) as compliant with the Wikidata's bibliographic data model. The items for editions should be linked with corresponding works through edition or translation of (P629) property. If these criteria are not met, you cannot find your selected books in the category section.

Q. I am trying to download a book, but its failing. Why?

A. The app relies on the Ws-export tool for downloads. If the download is failing, then it is the issue of the tool there. You can report the issue at Wikimedia Phabricator.

Q. Can I read a work which is not fully proofread or validated in the app?

A. No, previously we had an import option through which you could have imported any downloaded ePub file to the app from the Library section. From v 1.2.0, we have disabled the import option.

Q. How frequently is the catalogue in the app updated?

A. The catalogue is updated daily. There is also a admin dashboard for the developers, where they can update catalogue as they need.

Q. Which organizations have supported the development of the app?

A. The development of the app was initially financially supported by Centre for Internet & Society until March, 2025. The app is using their credentials to host in the Google Play store. The Wikimedia Foundation has also sponsored a three-months long full-term internship through its collaboration with Outreachy during its 31st round.
