The Wiki Digi-Youth Clubs pilot engaged more than 100 young people across Nigeria, Rwanda, and Tanzania through challenge-based learning activities designed to build Wikimedia skills, teamwork, and digital literacy. The first half of 2026 has been marked by a schedule of Wikimedia education activities at Portuguese universities. Between February and May, students and teachers from different institutions have taken part in projects that connect teaching, research, and collaborative production of free knowledge through Wikipedia. These experiences show the strengthening of partnerships between the Wikimedia Movement and higher education in Portugal, consolidating teaching practices that encourage digital literacy, academic writing, and the open sharing of knowledge. The project "25x25 Celebrating Wikipedia," which takes place from February to September 2026 in Córdoba, Argentina, celebrates Wikipedia's 25th anniversary through the collective creation of two murals inspired by the free encyclopedia and the promotion of Wikimedia projects, open access, and Creative Commons licenses. Implemented in an elementary school and a high school in partnership with the Artistic Collective ALLI, the project involves students in learning activities about Wikipedia and artistic production that will culminate in painting the murals alongside families and community organizations. The Wiki Education Philippines program of the PhilWiki Community reached another significant milestone as educators, researchers, writers, cultural workers, and Wikimedians gathered for Bikol WikiConference 2026, a three-day conference held from May 29 to 31, 2026. Hosted by the Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) and the City Government of Naga, in partnership with the Bikol Wikipedia Community, Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement Inc., and other institutions, the conference demonstrated how Wikimedia projects continue to transform teaching, preserve Philippine languages, and empower communities through open knowledge. A Wikimedia education program was implemented in partnership with Limkokwing University to train students in Wikipedia and Wikidata editing. Students participated in hands-on learning through workshops, edit-a-thons, and mentorship sessions. The program resulted in 74 new Wikidata items and 14 improved items focused on Botswana’s creative and digital industries. Participants developed skills in research, writing, digital literacy, and collaborative knowledge production. Preparations for Edu Wiki Camp 2026 are underway as Wikimedia Serbia staff finalizes participant selection, program activities, and logistical arrangements. The camp, taking place from 13–16 July in Sremski Karlovci, Serbia, will bring together young people interested in Wikipedia, digital literacy, and free knowledge. Participants can look forward to workshops, educational sessions, and opportunities to connect with peers while developing new skills and contributing to Wikimedia projects. Read more…

The EduWiki Hub’s Newcomer’s Starter Kit, launched globally on May 29, 2026, is a practical roadmap designed to help educators and volunteers confidently integrate Wikimedia projects into the classroom. It effectively bridges the gap between curiosity and practice by moving beyond basic technical instructions to focus on student agency, community support, and meaningful learning outcomes. Rather than just tracking content outputs like edit counts, the kit guides teachers in helping students become active knowledge creators while navigating the movement's human infrastructure and mentorship networks. Ultimately, it serves as an adaptable, community-driven resource, and the global education community is now invited to download, translate, and localize it for their own classrooms. Read more…

The Wikimedians of Albanian Language User Group have made progress in enhancing their collaboration with public educational institutions in Kosovo. For two months, an active collaboration was undertaken on using the Wikipedia translation tool as the main pillar of an extra credit assignment in language studies. Read more…

The Wikimedia Community User Group Botswana implemented a three-month Wikimedia Volunteer Focus Group BW 2026 to strengthen editing skills and encourage sustained participation among volunteers. Five volunteers collaborated to create and improve articles while developing technical and leadership skills. Participants gained experience facilitating several training sessions and supporting community activities, contributing to the growth of open knowledge and Wikimedia communities in Botswana. After six months in Cohort 1 of the EduWiki Hub Mentorship Program, a self-driven contributor reflects on turning scattered technical and community work into a documented, sustainable initiative – Wiki Open Learning – and a capstone tool, WhichTool. The program reached 44 students and contributors, onboarded 18 new editors, and anchored its work in two real-world student events in Lalitpur and Vidisha, India. Read more…

On June 10, 2026, facilitators Yusuf and Ann led a mobile-first Wikimedia Commons training for six Basic Computer Skills students at the Kenya National Library Service to turn personal smartphones into tools for open knowledge creation. Read more…

The Wiki Digi Youth Clubs Initiative was implemented in collaboration with secondary schools and higher learning institutions across Rwanda to integrate Wikimedia projects into education. The program actively involved both teachers and students. Teachers participated as facilitators through training sessions, while students engaged in club activities, editing campaigns, and Wikimedia Commons contributions. Participants developed key skills including digital literacy, information literacy, collaborative editing, critical thinking, research skills, and responsible use of open educational resources. They also gained practical experience through activities such as creating club identities, uploading images to Wikimedia Commons, and contributing audio recordings of local places. The initiative strongly promotes open education in Rwanda by encouraging free access to knowledge, supporting contributions to Wikimedia platforms, and integrating open educational resources into teaching and learning practices across schools and institutions.
