Bagurumba: The National Dance of the Bodo People

Bagurumba is a traditional folk dance of the Bodo community, one of the largest indigenous ethnic groups of Assam, India. It is widely regarded as the national dance of the Bodo people and holds a special place in their cultural and social life.

Description

The dance is primarily performed by Bodo women during the Bwisagu festival, which marks the beginning of the Bodo New Year in mid-April. The performers, adorned in colourful traditional attires like Dokhona, "Regeragang", "Aronai" with silver ornaments and flowers, sway gracefully to the melodious tunes of traditional instruments such as the Kham (drum), Siphung (flute), and Serja (string instrument).

The movements of Bagurumba resemble the natural elegance of butterflies and birds. The dance is a symbolic representation of harmony with nature and reflects the Bodo people's respect for the environment and rural life.

Cultural Significance

Bagurumba is not only a dance form but also a way of preserving and celebrating Bodo identity.
