Unlike the rest of the Altiplano, the residents in the capital city region mainly live in cities.

The mines spurred the early development of the city of San Luis Potosí. It played an important part in the Mexican War of Independence along with other mining centers. In the War of Reform, the city was for a short time the capital of the country. The Mexican Revolution began with the escape of Francisco Madero from prison in San Luis Potosí.

The capital is one of the best in Mexico for colonial architecture. It is known for its strong artistic tradition. The Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes and the Instituto de Cultura de San Luis Potosí sponsor the Premio Nacional de Cuento (National Story Prize) to encourage good writers. An active music community led to the founding of the Orquesta Sinfónica de San Luis Potosí in 2000.

Drink

Beer is, by far, the most popular drink in San Luis Potosi and several small craft breweries make distinctive artesanal beers to suit local tastes. Local craft breweries (all in the city of San Luis Potosi) include:

  • Cerveceria 7 Barrios - up to 10 beers available at a time, nice variation in styles with an American wheat, a red ale, a smooth porter, a medium bodied American ale and more...
  • La Legendaria - 7 regular beers plus occasional seasonal offerings. Regular beers include a witbier, kolsch, blonde ale, pale ale, IPA, porter, and an amazingly complex imperial stout. Beers are on tap at several bars and all beers are available in bottles.
  • Brewtap by Brewtal - modern brewpub with a limited range of lighter ales
  • Cerveceria Imperial - several regular beers including a pale ale with a grassy hops character, a dark ale reminiscent of Texas bock beers (like Shiner), a maltier porter, and a richly sweet stout
