As it as at the crossroads of I-5 and I-405, it is a bedroom community for Seattle, Everett and Bellevue, and has one of the largest concentrations of retailers in the region, anchored by the Alderwood Mall.

Interstate 5 (I-5) runs through the city, connecting to Seattle to the south and Everett to the north.

The I-5 interchange with Interstate 405 (I-405) and State Route 525 (WA-525) is just north of city limits.
