Etymology
From Proto-HellenicCategory:Ancient Greek terms inherited from Proto-Hellenic#ΝΑΟΣCategory:Ancient Greek terms derived from Proto-Hellenic#ΝΑΟΣ *nahwós, perhaps from Proto-Indo-EuropeanCategory:Ancient Greek terms derived from Proto-Indo-European#ΝΑΟΣ *nes- (“to join with, to conceal oneself”) and related to ναίω (naíō, “to dwell”), νέομαι (néomai, “to go or come back”). Alternatively, it has been proposed that the word is related to ναῦς (naûs, “boat, ship”), due to the origin of Greek temples in upturned rowing ships stored on supports.[1] However, the existence of rare variants ναιός (naiós) and νειός (neiós) suggest a possible Pre-GreekCategory:Ancient Greek terms borrowed from a Pre-Greek substrate#ΝΑΟΣCategory:Ancient Greek terms derived from a Pre-Greek substrate#ΝΑΟΣ origin.[2]
