Proto-Sino-Tibetan

Reconstruction

  • Proto-Sino-Tibetan:
    • Proto-Tibeto-Burman:
      • *biy (Benedict, 1972; Weidert, 1987; LaPolla, 1987)
      • *s-bəy-n/k (Matisoff, 2003; STEDT)

In this reconstruction, *P stands for an uncertain labial sound. It appears as a *b in most Sino-Tibetan languages, but Karenic has a voiceless aspirated stop, Chinese has a voiceless unaspirated stop, and rGyalrongic has aberrant reflexes ranging from prenasalized voiced stop to simple /m/ in Horpa (including Tangut), which Lai indexes with a voiceless nasal.

The *ia in Kuki-Chin is also irregular.
