Etymology

From Middle Danish tillbaghe, originally a preposition phrase with til (to) and the old genitive plural of bag (back). Compare Swedish tillbaka, Icelandic til baka, Norwegian tilbake. A similar formation, with a different noun, in German zurück, Dutch terug, Low German torügg.
