Featured picture candidates Featured picture candidates are images that the community will vote on, to determine whether or not they will be highlighted as some of the finest on Commons. This page lists the candidates to become featured pictures. The picture of the day images are selected from featured pictures. Old candidates for featured pictures are listed in the log pages and in the candidate archives. There are also chronological lists of featured pictures: 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 and current month. Formal thingsNominatingGuidelines for nominatorsPlease read the complete guidelines before nominating. This is a summary of what to look for when submitting and reviewing FP candidates:
Artworks, illustrations, and historical documentsThere are many different types of non-photographic media, including engravings, watercolors, paintings, etchings, and various others. Hence, it is difficult to set hard-and-fast guidelines. However, generally speaking, works can be divided into three types: Those that can be scanned, those that must be photographed, and those specifically created to illustrate a subject. Works that must be photographed include most paintings, sculptures, works too delicate or too unique to allow them to be put on a scanner, and so on. For these, the requirements for photography, below, may be mostly followed; however, it should be noted that photographs which cut off part of the original painting are generally not considered featurable. Works that may be scanned include most works created by processes that allow for mass distribution − for instance, illustrations published with novels. For these, it is generally accepted that a certain amount of extra manipulation is permissible to remove flaws inherent to one copy of the work, since the particular copy – of which hundreds, or even thousands of copies also exist – is not so important as the work itself. Works created to serve a purpose include diagrams, scientific illustrations, and demonstrations of contemporary artistic styles. For these, the main requirement is that they serve their purpose well. Provided the reproduction is of high quality, an artwork generally only needs one of the following four things to be featurable:
Digital restorations must also be well documented. An unedited version of the image should be uploaded locally, when possible, and cross-linked from the file description page. Edit notes should be specified in detail, such as "Rotated and cropped. Dirt, scratches, and stains removed. Histogram adjusted and colors balanced." PhotographsOn the technical side, we have focus, exposure, composition, movement control and depth of field.
On the graphic elements we have shape, volume, color, texture, perspective, balance, proportion, noise, etc.
You will maximise the chances of your nominations succeeding if you read the complete guidelines before nominating. Video and audioPlease nominate videos, sounds, music, PDFs, etc. at Commons:Featured media candidates. Set nominationsIf a group of images are thematically connected in a direct and obvious way, they can be nominated together as a set. A set should fall under one of the following types:
Adding a new nominationIf you believe that you have found or created an image that could be considered valuable, with appropriate name, quality, image description, categories and licensing, then do the following. Step 1: copy the image name into this box, after the text already present in the box, for example, Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Your image filename.jpg. Then click on the "create new nomination" button. All single files: For renominations, simply add /2 after the filename. For example, Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Foo.jpg/2
All set nomination pages should begin "Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/", e.g. "Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/My Nomination".
Step 3: manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list: Click here, and add the following line to the TOP of the nominations list:
Nominations are time-sensitive and for one-time use only. An automatic clock starts as soon as they are created. Do not create them in advance, save them for later or re-activate them. Galleries and FP categories: Please add a gallery page and section heading from the list at Commons FP galleries. Write the code as Page name#Section heading. For example: Optional: if you are not the creator of the image, please notify them using
An 'Alternative' is created by adding a sub-section to the nomination page: ====Alternative==== VotingEditors whose accounts have at least 10 days and 100 constructive, stable edits on Commons (excluding user and talk pages) can vote. Everybody can vote for their own nominations. Anonymous (IP) votes are not allowed. You may use the following templates:
You may indicate that the image has no chance of success with the template reason - ~~~~, where reason explains why the image is clearly unacceptable as a FP. The template can only be used when there are no support votes other than the one from the nominator. A well-written review helps participants (photographers, nominators and reviewers) improve their skills by providing insight into the strengths and weaknesses of a picture. Explain your reasoning, especially when opposing a candidate (which has been carefully selected by the author/nominator). English is the most widely understood language on Commons, but any language may be used in your review. A helpful review will often reference one or more of the criteria listed above. Unhelpful reasons for opposing include:
Remember also to put your signature (~~~~). Featured picture delisting candidatesOver time, featured picture standards change. It may be decided that for some pictures which were formerly "good enough", this is no longer the case. This is for listing an image which you believe no longer deserves to be a featured picture. For these, vote:
This can also be used for cases in which a previous version of an image was promoted to FP, but a newer version of the image has been made and is believed to be superior to the old version, e.g. a newly edited version of a photo or a new scan of a historical image. In particular, it is not intended for replacing older photos of a particular subject with newer photos of the same subject, or in any other case where the current FP and the proposed replacement are essentially different images. For these nominations, vote:
If you believe that some picture no longer meets the criteria for FP, you can nominate it for delisting, copying the image name into this box, after the text already present in the box: In the new delisting nomination page just created you should include:
After that, you have to manually insert a link to the created page at the top of Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list. As a courtesy, leave an informative note on the talk page(s) of the original creator, uploader(s), and nominator with a link to the delisting candidate. can be used for this purpose. Featured picture candidate policyGeneral rules
Featuring and delisting rulesA candidate will become a featured picture in compliance with following conditions:
The delisting rules are the same as those for FPs, with voting taking place over the same time period. The rule of the 5th day is applied to delisting candidates that have received no votes to delist, other than that of the proposer, by day 5. The FPCBot handles the vote counting and closing in most cases, current exceptions are candidates containing multiple versions (“alternatives”) of the image as well as delist-and-replace nominations. Any experienced user may close the requests not handled by the bot. For instructions on how to close nominations, see Commons:Featured picture candidates/What to do after voting is finished. Also note that there is a manual review stage between when the bot has counted the votes and before the nomination is finally closed by the bot; this manual review can be done by any user familiar with the voting rules. Hint: Until summer 2025, the bot was also not able to process FPXed, FPDed and withdrawn nominations as well as delist nominations; this has been fixed, users do not need to close such nominations anymore. Above all, be politePlease don't forget that the image you are judging is somebody's work. Avoid using phrases like "it looks terrible" and "I hate it". If you must oppose, please do so with consideration. Also remember that your command of English might not be the same as someone else's. Choose your words with care. Happy judging… and remember… all rules can be broken. See also

Info I found it amazing that this giant bridge was towering over the already rather tall apartment buildings. The whole sea-crossing channel, comprising two bridges (the two-pylon Gaolangang Bridge on the left and the three-pylon Huangmaohai Bridge on the right) connected with viaducts, has a total length of 31 km, and was completed in 2025. This view was taken from the rooftop of an apartment building in Pingsha (I happen to know someone living in the penthouse there). We were fortunate that the air quality was good enough to see the link fairly clearly despite being tens of kilometers away. dllu (talk) 22:11, 26 July 2026 (UTC)

- I see a few speckles toward the front of the plane that would be NR remnants - the underneath of a dark plane against a bright sky is challenging - and a little CA near the nose that I'll try to address. As for the composition, it's a matter of taste, but far too many pictures of airplanes are just static depictions, rather than showing a fast-moving flying machine climbing into an interesting sky, with plenty of leading space. Info Male Lion (Panthera leo) prowling in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania. Prowling primarly consists of walking slowly low-to-the-ground with head down while fixing the target and trying to be as stealthy as possible. This action is a behavior commonly expressed by large carnivores to assess their surroundings, stalk preys, or approach with reduced detectability. In this instance, the lion was pursuing a cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) mother and her three cubs, that where close to a recent kill. Lions frequently engage in kleptoparasitism by usurping kills from smaller predators and may also attack cheetahs or their offspring to reduce interspecific competition for prey resources.

Weak oppose- @Tagooty:
Weak oppose The harsh lighting itself is not necessarily an issue for me. It is the fact that the editing doesn't match the lighting too well: It is too dull and the colors are washed out. --Aciarium ⚒ (talk) 13:59, 26 July 2026 (UTC)- I've uploaded a new version with punchier editing. dllu (talk) 17:05, 26 July 2026 (UTC)

Oppose Random framing, overall unsharpness. Alvesgaspar (talk) 11:23, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
Weak oppose per Alvesgaspar. I find the image quality fine but although it's hard to get the right crop here, I don't feel that this picture quite manages it. Cmao20 (talk) 19:21, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
Weak oppose My first impression upon seeing this photo was that it was a scanned film shot; unfortunately, I later realized it was digital. It is a beautiful image, but I would have liked to see the animals in the foreground fully in the frame rather than cropped off. Overall, the photo could benefit from better quality—specifically improved post-processing (color and contrast) and greater sharpness—in addition to the framing issue I mentioned. Also, was the focal length beyond 300mm? Perhaps the subject was too far away, causing the focusing issue? --Wilfredor (talk) 16:32, 26 July 2026 (UTC)

Comment I think crop above is a bit tight, i would add some px of sky. Also, when doing PD, did you enlarge vertical ? Seem it need some too. Otherwise good shot, QI. @Carschten, ★. --Mile (talk) 09:23, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
Comment The immediate feeling is that the building is leaning to the left, which is not confirmed by checking the verticals. That has probably to do with the non-horizontal ground? Any way, I would not go as far with the PC and would leave the verticals slightly convergent. Alvesgaspar (talk) 11:27, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
Comment @ArionStar, PetarM, and Alvesgaspar: Thank you very much for the nomination and your feedback. I’ve extended the crop at the top and also distorted the perspective again. In my view, we have to accept that the building itself und the surrounding have very few truly straight horizontal and vertical lines. I’ve tried a lot, but a completely satisfactory result won’t be possible due to my perspective and the building’s construction. If there is one, I’d be happy to see your suggestions. However, I’m not really sure what "enlarge vertical" means or how I’m supposed to correct the perspective while still keeping the verticals slightly convergent. --kaʁstn 11:59, 24 July 2026 (UTC)
- Not your fault or the building's fault, I believe. The vertical and horizontal lines are correct to within about 0.2 degrees. I asked ChatGPT and he suggested it might be the result of an assymetrical background and lighting. I rotated the image 0.5 degrees clockwise ... and magic, it looked straight. -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 12:04, 26 July 2026 (UTC)

Neutral I'm not fully convinced by the framing. The image also appears slightly cool, with a subtle blue cast in the snow and other neutral areas. Overall, a very good image, but not quite enough for my support. -- Radomianin (talk) 07:56, 24 July 2026 (UTC)

Weak oppose Sorry, there is nothing wrong with this picture - good lighting, sharp, good illustration of the subject - but I struggle to see it as having the wow-factor for FP, it doesn't get across any of the emotions I associate with great sports photography. concordo plenamente com o Joaquim, necessária uma correção de perspetiva, algo relativamente fácil de fazer. - Because this is not what we really see when looking at the monument, due to perspective correction. Comment This is indeed a fascinating image, but I believe a Commons featured picture should be minimally documented, which is not the case. The only thing we have is the image name, which Google translates "The books are passed down from generation to generation." But a lot of aditional information is available, just by dumping the image into Google Gemini: the photographer, the sculpture, place, etc. -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 18:48, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks, I gave it a try. However, I'm now concerned that the photographer, Mohammad Hossein Madadi, uploaded the photo himself. -- XRay 💬 19:00, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
- Concerns have grown even further, as the sculpture is reportedly located in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. -- XRay 💬 19:06, 22 July 2026 (UTC)
Comment I will support if we have the right to host this picture on the site, but I don't know if that's true yet given the above questions. Cmao20 (talk) 15:07, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
- Quite right, I see at least two issues here. First, is this image subject to copyright? Even if the uploader is the author, that does not imply the image is free. Second, may photographs of the sculpture in Saudi Arabia be published? -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 15:12, 23 July 2026 (UTC)
Comment @A2071: Unfortunately, I can't answer the questions that have come up. I would ask the photographer to comment on this. -- XRay 💬 08:44, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
Comment Can only agree – the photo is fascinating, but at the same time there may be legal problems, at least regarding the sculpture. According to Commons:Freedom of panorama, the United Arab Emirates don’t have freedom of panorama (and Saudi Arabia doesn’t have it, too). Of course it is possible that the photographer got a permission to take and even to publish the photo including the sculpture. But only the photographer can explain this … – Aristeas (talk) 09:32, 26 July 2026 (UTC)

Info Titan triggerfish (Balistoides viridescens) waiting in a cleaning station, see the bluestreak cleaner wrasses (Labroides dimidiatus) cleaning the gills in Nosy Sakatia, Madagascar. The titan triggerfish lives in lagoons and at reefs to depths of 50 centimetres (20 in) in most of the Indo-Pacific. With a length of up to 75 centimetres (30 in) it's the largest species of triggerfish in its range. The titan triggerfish is diurnal and solitary. It feeds on sea urchins, molluscs, crustaceans, tube worms and coral. It's one of a number of species of fish which can hunt and eat the crown-of-thorns starfish. They have been observed being aggressive to other fish who enter their territory and females can be aggressive to divers and snorkelers around their nests during the reproduction season, which occurs for about a week in each month (either after the full moon or new moon, depending on the population). Note: there are no FPs on Commons of the genus Balistoides. c/u/n by Poco a poco (talk) 07:08, 22 July 2026 (UTC)

Comment @Aokoroko: It would be great to include in the image file a scheme showing the exact location, in Mandelbrot set, where the picture was calculated. I assume that no part of this image depicts parts of the Mandelbrot set itself, which is usuaaly painted black. Which would mean that this was taken from somme peripheric part and the differemt colours correspond to different numbers of iterations before the cycle diverged. Am I right? -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 12:47, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
Info See here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mandelbrot-with-xy-grid.png -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 13:10, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
- You are partly right! Yes, the vibrant colored areas represent the escape time (the number of iterations before the sequence diverges to infinity).
- However, parts of the Mandelbrot set itself are actually present in this image. Inside those small 'infinity' structures, there are tiny, dark island copies of the main Mandelbrot set (micro-cardioids).
- As mentioned in the description, this is a deep zoom at X ≈ -2.0 (specifically -1.999995...). This location is at the very tip of the main antenna (the extreme western needle) of the Mandelbrot set. Since the zoom is incredibly deep (1.15 × 10⁻¹¹⁹), making a visual map/scheme is practically impossible, as any standard resolution overview map would look like a single atom or completely disappear at this scale. The exact numerical coordinates provided are the only way to locate it. Aokoroko (talk) 13:15, 20 July 2026 (UTC)

- Well, yes! Aokoroko (talk) 19:03, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
- According to en:Mandelbrot set#Basic properties: Douady and Hubbard showed that the Mandelbrot set is connected. They constructed an explicit conformal isomorphism between the complement of the Mandelbrot set and the complement of the closed unit disk. Mandelbrot had originally conjectured that the Mandelbrot set is disconnected. This conjecture was based on computer pictures generated by programs that are unable to detect the thin filaments connecting different parts of . Upon further experiments, he revised his conjecture, deciding that should be connected. A topological proof of the connectedness was discovered in 2001 by Jeremy Kahn.[1] Majow (talk) 23:10, 20 July 2026 (UTC)

- If the point in the middle belongs to the Mandelbrot set, then there must be other M-set parts connected to it because the whole M set is connected. Were they caught by your algorithm? -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 23:21, 25 July 2026 (UTC)
- I am familiar with the algorithm: the algorithm is based on a dot grid and smooths the calculated colors by averaging; consequently, it cannot capture these fine filaments. However, this is not a flaw, but an artistic decision. --Majow (talk) 06:37, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
- You are absolutely right mathematically: the Mandelbrot set is connected, and these parts must be linked. However, there is a huge difference between mathematical truth and pixel resolution. At this extreme zoom (Width = 4.6 × 10⁻¹⁶²). When we look at the wider view (10⁻¹¹⁹), the grid of pixels is way too coarse. The connecting threads are billions of times smaller than a single pixel at that scale, so they completely "drop through the cracks" of the grid. They exist, but they are physically invisible to the rendering algorithm at that magnification level. It's like trying to see a 1-millimeter wire on a map of the entire solar system. Aokoroko (talk) 12:22, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
- If we dig deeper into the geometry of the thing, we realize then the M-set might not be locally connected, meaning that the connection between two points may be infinitely complex, not just a succession of hyperbolic shapes or a simple one-dimensional filament. This question is the famous MLC conjecture. Proving it may be enough to win the Fields medal!.... -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 19:25, 26 July 2026 (UTC)
- You are absolutely right, and it's brilliant that you brought up the MLC (Mandelbrot Local Connectedness) conjecture! The topology of the M-set at these scales is indeed mind-bogglingly complex, and proving MLC is one of the "Holy Grails" of modern mathematics. However, whether the M-set is locally connected or not, the practical problem with our render remains the same: the resolution gap. If MLC is true, the connecting filaments exist but are infinitely thin (thinner than our pixel grid), so the algorithm misses them. If MLC is false and the local structure is an unimaginably complex, non-locally-connected monster, those chaotic connections are still microscopic and completely hidden inside the sub-pixel space. So either way—whether it's a beautiful 1D filament or a topological nightmare—the standard escape-time algorithm at 10e-119 simply doesn't have the resolution to capture it! Support Not a nice subject but certainly a well composed picture with plenty of value to Wikimedia projects. Cmao20 (talk) 14:26, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
Oppose composition trouble: unfortunate cropping at the bottom and especially on the left, half of the main character's head is missing -- George Chernilevsky talk 15:17, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
Oppose as per George. The tight crop, especially cutting off much of the researcher's head, weakens the composition. This would be a good candidate for COM:VIC instead. -- Radomianin (talk) 19:09, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
Oppose Beside illustrating animal cruelty, I don't see much value. Quality is OK, but composition is not really interesting. Yann (talk) 19:21, 18 July 2026 (UTC)
Oppose Bad crop, bad composition, normal quality and in all honesty not special enough to be featured. Wolverine X-eye 08:50, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
Oppose Per above. It might be valuable for the people in the image who are part of the context, but for viewers, I don't see much value in a poor creature hanging by its tail and the smile of the young lady present at this scene. I'm not very familiar with VIC, but I don't think this is an example of the best image within scope. -- IamMM (talk) 09:26, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
Comment I'm surprised people don't like the composition, that was the reason why I nominated the image: I like the curve of the girls' faces and their gazes looking up at the mouse, which to me is the focal point of the image. I understand being upset at the animal cruelty on display, but I think it is a good illustration of the subject (animal testing), and I think that how upsetting a subject is should not decide whether it is FP or not. I think this image, in its controversial theme, can spark an interesting debate. LetmeEditit (talk) 11:26, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
Support: I agree that this is actually a well-composed image, ethical issues aside. --The Cosmonaut (talk) 16:58, 19 July 2026 (UTC)
Strong support I find the curve of the arm and faces to be very interesting compositionally, and I believe the bright colors and expressions conflicting with the condemnable subject matter give this picture notable complexity. In my opinion this photograph has plenty of utility even judging solely by virtue of the reaction it warranted here. I interpret it as an illustration of how, when given justification, people allow themselves to be happy with the reprehensible. Depiction of the controversial should not be discouraged, as it allows us to see the real state of the world, instead of just what we agree with. — Julian Lupyan (talk) 18:36, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
Oppose Yes, the photo is well composed, but it does not mitigate the implicit animal cruelty. In a way, depicting that reality with a nice picture seems to blank what it represents. -- Alvesgaspar (talk) 18:43, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
Support I think there is an important distinction between illustrating cruelty and supporting cruelty. This is a well composed image that illustrates a common practice which is perceived by many to be cruel. Would featuring it mean that we support the cruelty? I don't think so. An aside: we have several images of animals as food. One, iirc, of several dead pig carcasses in a market. Those images were featured. I don't see how this is more cruel than that, and I say this as a meat eater. --UnpetitproleX (Talk) 22:36, 20 July 2026 (UTC)

Closing nominations manually
The following description explains how to close nominations manually. Normally this is not necessary, as FPCBot takes care of counting the votes, closing and archiving the nominations. When the Bot has counted the votes, a user needs to check and approve the result; everything else is done by the Bot. Therefore, the following instructions are normally only needed for delist-and-replace nominations that the Bot cannot (yet) process, and in case the Bot malfunctions. The closing can be done by any experienced user. If you need help, just ask on the FPC talk page.
Closing a featured picture nomination
- On Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the nomination, then [edit].
- Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line):

(You can leave thegalleryparameter blank if the image was not featured. If the nomination contains alternatives, you must add thealternative=xxxparameter with the name of the selected image between thegalleryand thesigparameter. See FPC-results-reviewed for examples and more explanations.) - Edit the title of the nomination and add
featuredornot featuredafter the link – for example:
:File:XXXXX.jpg
becomes
=== :File:XXXXX.jpg, featured === - Save your edit.
- Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line):
- If it is featured:
- Add the picture to the list of the four most recently featured pictures of an appropriate gallery of Commons:Featured pictures, list as the first one and delete the last one, so that the number is four again.
- Add the picture to the appropriate featured picture gallery page and section. Click on the most appropriate link beneath where you just added it as one of the four images on Commons:Featured pictures, list to find the gallery page, and search for the correct section. (An image should only appear ONE time in the galleries. After a successful nomination, the image can be placed in several of the Featured pictures categories.)
- Add the template
to the image description page.- If it was an alternative image or part of a set nomination, use the
com-nomparameter. For example, if File:Foo.jpg was promoted in the nominationCommons:Featured picture candidates/File:Bar.jpg, useYou also need thecom-nomparameter if the image gets renamed. - If the image is already featured on another Wikipedia, just add
featured=1to the Assessments template. For instance, becomes
- If it was an alternative image or part of a set nomination, use the
- Head over to the structured data for the image and add the “Commons quality assessment” claim (P6731) “Wikimedia Commons featured picture” (Q63348049).
- Add the picture to the chronological archives of featured pictures. Place it at the end of the gallery using this format:
File:xxxxx.jpg|# Title<br>created by xxxxx, uploaded by xxxxx, nominated by xxxxx<br> xxx, xxx, xxx- The
#should be replaced by 1 for the first image nominated that month, and counts up after that. Have a look at the other entries on that page for examples. (If you want to do everything perfectly, link that number to the nomination subpage, just like FPCBot does this. It allows users to jump directly to the nomination.) - The
Titleshould be replaced by the bare name of the featured picture, without the ‘File:’ or the file extension (such as .jpg .tif .svg). - The
xinx, x, xshould be replaced by the count of support, oppose, and neutral votes respectively. - If the nomination was a set nomination, use this format:
File:xxxxx.jpg|# Set: Title (Z files)<br>created by xxxxx, uploaded by xxxxx, nominated by xxxxx<br> x, x, x
Replace theZin(Z files)by the count of images in the set, and use the name of the first image from the set instead ofFile:xxxxx.jpgand for the title.
- The
- Add
FP promotion
File:XXXXX.jpgto the talk page of the nominator. For set nominations, use:== Set Promoted to FP ==, using the names of the set files instead of the XXXXXX and the title of the set instead of YYYYY.
<gallery>
File:XXXXXX.jpg
File:XXXXXX.jpg
</gallery>
YYYYY - Add
FP promotion
File:XXXXX.jpgto the talk page of the user who has uploaded the image, if that user is not the same as the nominator. - Add
FP promotion
File:XXXXX.jpgto the talk page of the creator, if the author is a different Commons user than nominator and uploader.
- Add candidate archive categories to the nomination so that people can easily find and evaluate past nominations (this applies also to unsuccessful, FPX-d, FPD-d and Withdraw-n nominations). It’s best practice to wrap all these categories in a
<noinclude>...</noinclude>section because they apply only to the nomination itself, not to the log page etc. which transclude it. You need three or four categories:- A category for the month and year, like Category:July 2026 featured picture candidates for the current month.
- A category for the type and result of the nomination, like Category:2026 successful candidates for featured picture status; replace “successful” by “unsuccessful”, “FPXed”, “FPDed” or “withdrawn”, depending on the final result of the nomination (see the supercategory for common values).
- A category for the subject of the nomination, like Category:2026 featured picture candidates of plants. Replace “plants” by one of the possible subject keywords like “animals”, “architecture”, etc.; see the base category for all common keywords. Basically the subject keywords correspond to the first part of the gallery link.
- If the nomination is a set nomination, add Category:2026 featured picture set nominations.
- As the last step (whether the image is featured or not; including FPX-d, FPD-d and Withdraw-n nominations), you have to move the transclusion (the and the text within those) of the nomination to the current log page.
- To find the current log page, visit the first page of the log for this month. If the header of that page contains a link with the text “Next part of this month”, the log for this month has been split into several parts because it contains too many entries. Click on the “Next part …” link and repeat this until you reach a page where the header does not offer a “Next part …” link; that’s the last and current log page.
- Now open Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list, click on [edit], and find the transclusion of the nomination you are closing. It will be of the form:
or:. - Copy that line to the bottom of the current log page and save that page. Then remove the same line from the candidate list and save that page.
Closing a delisting nomination
- On Commons:Featured picture candidates/candidate list click on the title/link of the candidate image, then [edit].
Add the result of the voting at the bottom (on a new line):
(for example see Commons:Featured picture candidates/removal/File:Ensifera ensifera (22271195865).jpg) - Edit the title of the delisting nomination and add
delistedornot delistedafter the image title; for example:=== :File:XXXXX.jpg ===
becomes=== :File:XXXXX.jpg, delisted === - Add candidate archive categories to the nomination; this works the same way as described above for featured picture nominations. The only difference is that the category for type and status must be of the form Category:2026 successful candidates for delisting from featured picture status, or Category:2026 successful candidates for delisting and replacing featured pictures if this is a delist-and-replace nomination. Substitute “unsuccessful”, “FPXed”, “FPDed” or “withdrawn” for “successful”, depending on the final result of the nomination.
- Move the transclusion of the nomination to the current log page; please see above for an explanation how to find the current log page and how to move the nomination to it.
- If the outcome was not delisted, stop here. If it is delisted:
- Remove the picture from Commons:Featured pictures, list and any subpages.
- Edit the picture's description as follows:
- In the Assessments template on the image description page, change
featured=1tofeatured=2(do not remove the Assessments template; do not change anything related to its status in other featured picture processes). If the image description page uses the old Featured picture template, replace it with. - Remove the image from all categories beginning with "Featured [pictures]" (example: Featured night photography, Featured pictures from Wiki Loves Monuments 2016, Featured pictures of Paris); but not from categories about featured pictures on specific Wikipedia editions, like Category:Featured pictures on Wikipedia, English.
- Remove the "Commons quality assessment" claim (P6731) "Wikimedia Commons featured picture" (Q63348049) from the picture's Structured data.
- In the Assessments template on the image description page, change
- Add a delisting-comment to the original entry in the chronological archive of featured pictures in bold-face, e. g. delisted 2007-07-19 (1–6) with (1–6) meaning 1 keep and 6 delist votes (change as appropriate). The picture must not be removed from the chronological archives.
- If this is a Delist and Replace, the delisting and promotion must both be done manually. To do the promotion, follow the steps in the section above. Note that the assessment tag on the file page and the promotion tag on the nominator's talk page won't pick up the /replace subpage that these nominations use.
Archiving a withdrawn nomination
If a nomination has been withdrawn by the nominator by using Withdraw or is cancelled with FPX or FPD, wait 24 hours after the nomination was last edited. If there has been no objection to the cancellation within this time, the nomination can simply be archived. Just add candidate archive categories to the nomination itself, then move the transclusion of the nomination to the current log page; please see above for an explanation how to find the current log page and how to move the nomination to it.
