Join the first national Wiki Science Competition 2025 in India from 1 Nov to 15 Dec

You are receiving this message as you have previously participated in one of the Wiki Loves X campaigns or are an active Wikimedia Commons contributor.

We’re excited to announce that the Wiki Science Competition 2025 in India is being organized for the very first time at a national level. This global campaign celebrates science through freely licensed images, videos, and other media on Wikimedia Commons. By participating, you help make science more visible, accessible, and inspiring to people everywhere.

The competition features eight exciting categories:

  1. People in Science
  2. Microscopy
  3. Astronomy
  4. Everyday Science
  5. Scientific Equipment
  6. Chemistry
  7. Physics
  8. Special Category

Campaign Duration: The competition will run from 1 November to 15 December 2025. You can upload your images anytime during this period.

Images taken before 1 November 2025 are also eligible, as long as they have never been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons before.

We’re excited to introduce the first-ever dedicated "Mobile Photography" participation option. Now, you can upload photographs taken with your mobile phone directly through a special upload wizard.

This new option is designed to encourage students and individuals who may not have access to high-end cameras like DSLRs to participate. Whether your images are captured using a mobile phone or a professional DSLR, all submissions will be judged equally within the relevant category. This ensures that everyone has an equal opportunity to capture and share the wonders of science from their own perspective.

Information on temporary account IP viewer rights

On November 12, temporary accounts will be enabled on Commons. The IP of unregistered users will then be hidden for most users. You, as a patroller or license reviewer, are eligible to request the new temporary account IP viewer right, if you need it to continue fighting vandalism and abuse on Commons. If you want to request the right, please file the request here. Please be aware that you also have to accept the Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy in your preferences. Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2025 voting is open!

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.
