Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.

Remarks about File:Australia General Election, 2022 -- Results by Division.svg

hi Eric. The map you created for the 2022 Australian election uses the 2019 divisions which are now out of date. The division of Stirling (Western Aus) has been abolished and a new division, Hawke has been created. Hi Eric! I’m not sure what exactly happened but the borders of the Division of Franklin in Tasmania appear to have been redrawn in a way that is not accurate on the 2022 election map. It is going to be a pain to fix but I decided to give you a heads up before I forgot.

Aside from this though, I have an alternate color palette for the political parties I thought I could share with you in case you find it preferable, although you would presumably have to change the colors on older maps as well so that they match. I pulled all of them from each party’s official logo:

Liberal: #194f9a

Liberal National: #0078bf

National: #057c46

Labor: #e13840

The Greens: #0b9b3d

Centre Alliance: #fd6507

Katter’s Australian: #df0d10

United Australian: #feec01

One Nation: #f16b26

I would have changed them myself as I think it is more fitting to use the colors officially used by each party, but I realized I should be polite and simply suggest them to the map’s uploader instead. It’s up to you :) The2016 (talk) 15:11, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for your suggestions, The2016! The party colours were copied over from the 2019 map, but I agree that it'd be better to use the official colours; I'll make the change soon. The older maps were not made by me, and I think it'd be all right for a bit of colour difference.

Hello @The2016, thanks for your alternate colours. With school, I was quite busy lately, so it took me awhile; but I changed all of them based on your recommendations – except for Katter’s Australian, since I feel there isn't sufficient contrast between that and Labor's colour. I've also fixed the inaccuracies in Tasmania, though some people have pointed out inaccuracies in N.S.W. as well, so I'll have to look into that. :) — Eric0892 (talk) 05:05, 2 May 2022 (UTC)

Canadian map errors?

Hi, I'm not sure if this is intentional or not but a lot of the river detail on maps such as File:Canada Election 2021 Results Map.svg makes it seem like one constituency is actually two separate constituencies. Look at the Winnipeg inset for example. From a first glance I count 17 separate districts when in reality there are only 11. Kingofthedead (talk) 07:38, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Hello @Kingofthedead, you're right — the amount of rivers in the insets can be misleading. I am currently working on an improved version of the map; but since I am currently in school, it might take a while for me to make and publish the revised version. Inset for Windsor

The inset for Windsor is incorrectly labelled as "Essex". This doesn't make sense because all of the other insets are labelled based on the name of the city. Essex is the name of the county though. Jc8025 (talk) 04:33, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

Thanks for the comment. I'm not too familiar with the geography of the Windsor/Detroit area but my understanding is that my inset actually covers more than just the City of Windsor, but the entire county. Therefore I think it would make more sense to say "Essex". Thinking in retrospect, perhaps it would also be more appropriate to re-label "Vancouver" as "Metro Vancouver". But Windsor is not administratively part of Essex County. The other problem is that "Essex" is not a common name in Canada (few people outside of Southern Ontario know it). Everyone knows where Windsor is though because that's the main city. Renaming the inset "Windsor-Essex" would be sensible...that's also a common name that is used for the region. 99.242.43.183 20:54, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

Next Australian and Canadian federal election maps

Hi Ericǃ I'm aware the redistributions in New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia are only recently finalized and the gazetted maps are not yet published, but when they eventually are I'd hope you could continue the format you used for both the 2022 Australian and 2021 Canadian elections? It's professional, modern and detailed and it fits neatly with the maps used for previous elections. On the other hand, I don't think the maps currently used for the 2025 Australian and Canadian election pages are fit for purpose and see no reason to downgrade from the previous format.

Sorry if this is a bit out of the blueǃ I'd imitate your style and replace them myself but updating electoral boundaries is still beyond my capabilities.

I do intend on making and publishing maps for the next Australian and Canadian elections; my only concern with swapping the current maps out with mine is that I'll inadvertently start an "edit war"! I'll try and get them published soon and maybe we can reach a consensus with what maps to use on the page.

2025 Liberal Party of Canada Leadership Election

Hello Eric! I must say I very much admire your maps. I just wanted to ask if you plan on making a map for the results of the 2025 LPC leadership election. I don't really have much experience with SVG maps, so I thought I would ask before trying to do it myself. Hi @Spaceshuttlediscovery! Yes, I do intend on making a map of the leadership race, but I am busy with school. I'll work on it when I get the time! Since it's a sea of red for Carney, I don't expect it to take long. It probably will be published within the week.

Essex?

The Windsor CMA contains 3 ridings but it is labelled as "Essex" on the 2025 federal election map. StatsCan refers to this entire area as the Windsor CMA, not the Essex CMA. Maybe you're thinking of Essex County...but you can’t call that whole area Essex because Windsor is not a part of Essex County (it’s a single-tier city). The only sensible name for the inset is Windsor. Monty948 (talk) 00:01, 23 March 2025 (UTC)

As soon as Prime Minister Carney calls the election tomorrow, I'll update the label along with adding the date of the election (looking like April 28). Thanks... Ontario 2025

2025 Canadian election recount

Hi! Hope all is well. The Canadian federal election district of Terrebonne in Quebec has flipped from BQ to LPC following a recount (), can you update the results map to reflect this change? Thanks! Zinderboff (talk) 01:08, 12 May 2025 (UTC)

Hello @Zinderboff, phew that’s a close one! Once all the recounts are done and all results are certified by the Returning Officers, I plan on updating the map all at once with validated results. Just because it’s easier to keep track of everything! However the file is an SVG, so if you’d like to see it updated feel free to use Inkscape or Adobe Illustrator to swap out the colour!
