Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Thanks for editing my Alaska House diagram

I didn't intend to upload my original diagram, but I appreciate your fixes to the color scheme. Do you know why your new version isn't showing up on the main page? Milfil (talk) 03:36, 21 January 2023 (UTC)

Sometimes you need to refresh the cache to get the images to update. It's either Ctrl+F5 or Shift+F5. Your computer/browser will store images like this on your device to keep it from having to re-download it every time you visit, but that has the effect of the images not always updating if they change without your browser knowing. If I still can't get it to change, which sometimes happens, I double-check on another device to make sure the changes went through. In this case, the changes did go through. maps

hi could you please fix the texas precinct maps so they align properly with the other maps? they also shouldn't use a black stroke the stroke should be transparent. here is a base map to use that aligns https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TX_GOV_2014.svg Putitonamap98 (talk) 00:27, 24 January 2024 (UTC)

I have updated these maps to be of the same proportion and use the same stroke style as the other precinct maps. Unfortunately, I am unable to update the shapes to match the geographic projection of the county maps, as doing so requires access to the original shapefiles. Map for 1998 South Carolina elections

@OutlawRun: Hello! I recently discovered some of the maps that you have created and I wanted to thank you for the work you have done!

I am writing today because I am wondering if you know how these two 1998 maps for South Carolina’s state House and Senate can be turned into Wikipedia-style maps that can then be edited in Inkscape. This and this. Thanks! Delcoan (talk) 03:29, 7 March 2026 (UTC)

Hi @Delcoan. It doesn't seem that the sources listed in the ARP website have the specific shapefiles for state legislative boundaries, nor do they have a direct download, but there are a few places you can look. The first would be the South Carolina Secretary of State (or similar) website. These often have archives of historical legislative districts. If they are not public-facing, you can reach out to someone there and see if they can hook you up with the shapefiles. I did a similar thing for Texas, which got me shapefiles going all the way back to 1972. Once you get these shapefiles, you'll need to open them up in a program like qGIS. Export the map as a .svg file, and you'll be able to edit it in inkscape with whatever colors you want. It's a pretty involved process at first, but once you get used to it, you can make these maps pretty quickly once you get the data files themselves. OutlawRun (talk) 04:12, 7 March 2026 (UTC)

Texas State House map request

Hello! Would you be willing to upload a blank map of the Texas State House equivalent of File:TxSen1970Results.svg? I would like to map the vote of the state legislature on Prop 7 from 1972. If you are curious, I have mapped the county results here: Delcoan (talk) 15:53, 12 June 2026 (UTC)

The official shapefiles for state legislative maps for Texas only go back to 1972. Anything before then has had to be manually created, and I have not done that for the State House yet. OutlawRun (talk) 15:59, 12 June 2026 (UTC)
