First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Thanks for uploading Image:NEEA.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. __ ABF __ ϑ 16:46, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Alchimista!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Bot de-flagging notification

Hi Alchimista, I'm writing to you because your bot Alch Bot (talk · contributions · Statistics · Recent activity · block log · User rights log · uploads · Global account information) is about to be de-flagged as a result of inactivity for a period longer than two years. If you'd like to keep that account flagged as a bot, please speak up at Commons:Bots/Requests/de-flag 2#Discussion; otherwise, I'll remove the bot flag from that account in a month from now (10 May 2014). Thanks for your understanding, odder (talk) 13:12, 10 April 2014 (UTC)

WLM stats

Hi, User:DarwIn told me to ask you because you probably know better. Most the Wikipedia articles about WLM in many languages are not updated. One of the reason is IMHO that yearly stats are difficult to reach. I am sure they are somewhere but it takes a while to find them and every year I forgot. Is there a summary page with the number of countries and participants and uploaded files? Thank you. If so, please, we should link that in the Wikipedia page.--Alexmar983 (talk) 17:39, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Alexmar983: , i belive this might be interesting for you: https://tools.wmflabs.org/wikiloves/. Does it helps? 2001:8A0:E895:B301:A9BA:3C76:DE3B:A88C 14:37, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Missing id?

Hello Alchimista, I am a bit confused about this edit of your bot. Did I do something wrong? There's definitely an ID (of the SIPA, which I added to the existing category), but no wikidata item number, as it doesn't exist. --Poco a poco (talk) 11:06, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi @Poco a poco: , you haven't done anything wrong, by contrary, your fotos are amazing! The bot is checking if MonumentIDPortugal is present, and if not searches for other way of adding the wikidata number, and if it fails adds that category. Now, pages in that cat will be reviewed by humans, and the template added accordingly. Some monuments, like the one in your foto, aren't on wikidata, so must be created and then the bot (or humans) can add MonumentIDPortugal. Alchimista (talk) 17:57, 19 September 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Raul solnado cnc.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Raul solnado cnc.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Thanks for uploading File:Biblioteca Pública de Évora - logo.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with cc-zero to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe 2026

Hello! I noticed you're a bot operator, so I thought you might be interested in a hackathon we're organizing: the Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe 2026, on 13–14 March in Arnhem, Netherlands.

It's a two-day, technically oriented hackathon bringing together Wikimedians from the region. Whether you want to work on bot frameworks, tools, or other technical projects, this could be a great opportunity to collaborate with fellow developers. Registration closes mid-January or when full. Let me know if there are any questions. Hope to see you there! Daanvr (talk) 09:11, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Folklore 2026 has started, Join us!

Hello Alchimista,

The world’s traditions are disappearing faster than we can document them, but you can help change that.

On behalf of the Wiki Loves Folklore International Team, we are reaching out to invite you to contribute to the 2026 edition of our global campaign.

Share Your Cultural Heritage with the World

Wiki Loves Folklore is an international media contest dedicated to documenting the "intangible" beauty of our cultures. Whether it’s the vibrant colours of a folk festival, the rhythm of a traditional dance, the secrets of a family recipe, or the legends of your hometown, your media helps preserve these legacies for generations to come.

How You Can Contribute Participating is simple, and every upload contributes to the world's largest free knowledge repository:

 • Capture: Take photos, record videos, or capture audio of folk activities, music, mythology, or traditional wear.
 • Upload: Share your files on Wikimedia Commons between 1 February 2026 and 31 March 2026.
 • Win: Beyond the satisfaction of preservation, there are international prizes for the most impactful contributions.

Ready to get started? Click here to upload your media now or visit the Main Project Page for full rules and category details.

Your perspective is a vital piece of the global cultural puzzle. We can't wait to see the folklore you bring to life.

Warm regards,

#WeTogether

Wiki Loves Folklore International Team

your request

Dear Alchimista. Please see: COM:VRT --Krd 06:23, 8 May 2026 (UTC)

Dear @Krd: ,
I'm aware of that, in the past I've been an OTRS member, so I still remember some of those processes. My doubt on the file is specifically what was the problem reported, so that I can help who uploaded it on how to do it properly.
The document is a scan of a Public Domain document, so there is no copyright over the document itself. The original document is on the Lisbon Science Academy, where the user who uploaded works, and you can confirm the PD status on the corresponding page on Portugal National Library
Next week there will be a presentation on WikiCon Portugal on the use of Wikimedia Commons and Wikisource as tools for researchers, so it's to understand why, so that I can advice them properly.
Best regards, Alchimista (talk) 11:27, 8 May 2026 (UTC)
