Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.

Earthquake-related image sources
Hi. I noticed that your recent uploads related to yesterday's earthquake were of locations quite far apart, and some were lacking the usual Exif info, but all are listed as own work. Did you perhaps forget to edit the author/source information? --Paul_012 (talk) 06:51, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- My various friends took the photos and they wish to remain anonymous (ie, they are willing to have these photos be uploaded under my name, as my own work). They are also well aware of what Commons is, what CC licences are, etc. The exif info was lost likely because they took the images and sent directly on messenger apps. Regardless, I can ensure you these are not taken out of the blue from other usual CC sources (which is perhaps apparent by the fact that reverse image searches return nothing). - I understand; that's more or less what I imagined. That said, it's not accurate to list such files as own work, which might lead to them be challenged. In such cases, the author should probably be listed as "Anonymous" and the source as "Provided to Chainwit. by the author, under the Creative Commons license". - @Chainwit.@Paul 012 "given by my friends", is not usually accepted. The friends (who are the de jure copyright holders if they were the ones who took the images) must send email correspondence to Wikimedia Commons through the email address provided at COM:VRTS. - @Paul 012 it's not that the images were published elsewhere; rather, it's that the uploader is not the person who took the images. It is clearly indicated at COM:VRTS#Licensing images: when do I contact VRT?, as the very first reason why the uploader needs to tell the copyright holders to send permission correspondences to Wikimedia. "I have received permission from the original author (not me) to upload the file to Commons." This is regardless if the image/s were previously published elsewhere or not.
- Therefore, Chainwit's friends must send emails to the VRTS team, for the reason the files as not being works of the uploader. (It would have been better if they created Wikimedia accounts and uploaded their images straight from their devices or drives [not from their social media platforms], but since, as Chainwit claimed, they want to remain anonymous, VRTS is the best option here.) This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. - I agree with your observation. The tricky part is the source book, published 2497 BE (1954 AD) did not state year nor date of photography. I believe the best approach now maybe 'unknown year' and 'at least before 1954'. I think this may apply to other photos from this book too. Thanks for bringing that up. -- Chainwit. - I cannot find any photographic sources as to the restoration work of Khruba Siwichai vs what probably would had to eventually be done by the state (Fine Arts Department, usually) ended up like. I would like to point out too that in Thai sources, as per my native experience, when mentioning "a restoration work" by "a monk"; the degree of "restorative" work can vary greatly - from removing overgrown plants to complete rebuilding. Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2025 voting is open!
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 1 will end on UTC.
