First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.
Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.

It seems sensible to delete an empty category. However, they did not notify me of the deletion of Sara Ballent's photographs. Why were they eliminated? The photographs were provided by her husband, the owner, who sent the permission email himself. What do I have to do to avoid these problems? We also specify the author of each image. If I do not provide a solid reason, I will feel subject to persecution and will file appropriate complaints. FMA (talk) 00:13, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Hi, I am replying here since that page will probably be deleted along with the empty gallery shortly. If you look at the Special:History/Sara Ballent, (this link will only work if it doesn't get deleted), all of the images were removed User:CommonsDelinker after they were deleted as not having sufficient permission. I do not have VRT access so I do not know why the emails were not sufficient enough to establish permission, but that seems like a question for the VRT Noticeboard. If sufficient permission was received, the files will be undeleted without you having to do anything. I would mention this to the person who sent the emails with permission as they probably did not respond to follow up questions from VRT agents about the permission emails. I did not delete the pictures directly nor did I have anything to do with the deletion. Hope this helps. Regards-- Seawolf35 (talk) 00:31, 7 May 2024 (UTC)

Dear Yann, thank you for your message. The husband of a dead scientist provided the files. Some photographies were taken by the husband, some other by the dead scientist (inherited by the husband) and some by other people (friends), requested by the dead scientist. All the files belonged to the husband or his dead wife. In all cases I specified who took each picture. The husband sent the email with the permission together all the information requested. All the pictures were deleted, even those taken by the husband! I think there is a mistake in this case. The list of files:

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

If you want to take part in WSC2025, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase (such as Chile or Bangladesh), please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2026.

Hi everyone,

Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.

I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
