Thanks for your message about the categorisation of photos - I will do as you suggest, thank you. I enjoy taking photos (mainly aerial ones), and happy to upload them to commons, but I'm less good at adding them to the wikipedia articles. I'll keep uploading and hope that other editors incorporate into articles. Have a look at my uploads for an idea of the kinds of pictures I'm taking... FossickUK (talk) 18:43, 8 August 2021 (UTC)

@FossickUK: Some things that might help keep your photos on WP pages are to caption them as fully as you can (which helps the image add something to the article) and to make sure the pictures are sufficiently different (there's no need for several somewhat similar photos - that is what Commons categories are best for). If this means you only end up with one or two photos, that's a signal to try and integrate them into the article (putting them near some text which relates to the image's subject is usually good). You might like to look at en:Help:Gallery tag (for how to make better galleries) and en:Help:Pictures (for how to put images straight into the article). If you select the best of your photos of a given thing, integrate it into the article and give it an informative caption, your photos are much less likely to be taken off by other editors.

Something else you might be interested if you feel like it is creating yourself a user category that you can put all your images into - it can help to have all of your images in one place. See Category:Images by Gazamp for an example; you can copy the code of that page to make your own (but make sure to replace the 'Gazamp's with 'FossickUK's).

Just so you know, St Ives and Towednack (this division) was won by an Independent (ex-Lib Dem and the council website didn't change it or something). Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photography contest hosted on Wikimedia Commons to document folklore and intangible cultural heritage from around the world, such as folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, folk activities, folk games, folk cuisine, folk wear, folktales, folk games, folk religion, mythology, and many more.

The campaign invites participants to document photographs, videos, and audios linked to folk culture and fit within the contest's theme. How to Contribute?

The dates for the submission in the photography contest on Wikimedia Commons are from 1 February to 31 March 2023. Probably you are wondering how you can take part. This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2025 voting is open!

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on 18 April 2026, 23:59:59 UTC.

Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.

I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
