Hello, Nerve net!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Support Good quality. The right crop is a bit unfortunate, the image would be better with a bit more contrast and vibrance. --Basotxerri 19:35, 15 November 2018 (UTC)  Comment I can crop out the right door but the resolution has to be lowered a bit and/or the subject has to be moved left, regarding increasing the contrast, no problem to do that but this will darken the shadows in subjects face. About vibrance. Do you mean saturation? Please give your feedbak. Regards. --Nerve net 13:14, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Tilted and needs perspective correction. If you haven't got more image space left, you might get in trouble with the crop after fixing the perspective. --Basotxerri 19:37, 15 November 2018 (UTC) Comment IMHO no tilting needed, the land behind the castle has different heights giving that appearance. Verbcatcher (talk) 18:21, 13 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi, I am sorry that this photo has a problem, because it is a high-quality image that would be good to have on Commons. I came across it in Category:Taken with Canon TS-E 24mm F3.5L, where I was looking because I am thinking of bidding for this lens in an auction.
I think that you used the tilt function of the lens to change the plane of focus, so that all the figures are in focus. It would be good to have a photo like this to illustrate the Tilt–shift photography and Scheimpflug principle articles in English Wikipedia, and the corresponding articles in other languages. For this purpose it would be better to have a photo with a background that is more obviously out of focus. Can you create something suitable? Otherwise I may try, if I win the auction. Regards, Verbcatcher (talk) 00:00, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
Verbcatcher, yes I used the tilt function of this lens to move he plane of focus over all figures as much as possible.
Normally I use tilt to isolate subjects/parts of the image like here: https://www.canonistas.com/galerias/showphoto.php?photo=443336&title=remero&cat=500
and here: https://www.canonistas.com/galerias/showphoto.php?photo=437221&title=pyracantha-urbana&cat=500
But also tried what you are asking for here (with less success than with the toys): https://www.canonistas.com/galerias/showphoto.php?photo=438387&title=cinco-ca-f1os&cat=500
Let me review my pictures in order to see if I've something that meets your request. Nerve net (talk) 08:14, 15 October 2022 (UTC)

Hi Nerve net, is this sculpture permanently installed at this location or only temporarily? --Túrelio (talk) 09:00, 5 December 2022 (UTC)

Temporarily until December 15th, more information at https://meninasmadridgallery.com/ Nerve net (talk) 09:12, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Thanks. You are probably aware that these sculptures are copyrighted works of art and that a temporary installation in the public is not sufficient to be covered by Spain's freedom-of-panorama exception. Is there any established agreement between the sculptors and the gallery/organisation about permission of photos of their sculptures, taken during the exhibition on the street? Of course, it would be a pain if we had to delete all these images, but we need be sure about the copyright status of each image to prevent re-users getting into legal problems. Are you aware if there has been a previous deletion-discussion about this exhibition (in earlier years)? --Túrelio (talk) 09:27, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
First: Nothing is stated in any way at the website. Nerve net (talk) 10:14, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Second: Do you have asked this question also to all contributors of the images available at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Meninas_Madrid_Gallery? Nerve net (talk) 10:16, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Third: If you plan to raise a deletetion request please do so, but please do it for all images available at the category https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Meninas_Madrid_Gallery. So all contributors can respond you. Nerve net (talk) 10:18, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
To Second: I had simply assumed that you were also the photographer in the previous years. Seems that was not the case. --Túrelio (talk) 10:24, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Go ahead and ask them too please. Nerve net (talk) 10:30, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
If read corresponding Spanish Laws:
- https://www.boe.es/buscar/doc.php?id=BOE-A-2018-5059
I'm not a lawyer but so far I could read, the current License CC BY-SA is not the right one to use as it allows the comercial ussage of the images, the comercial ussage is one of the topics that constantly appear in the reffered laws.
So I propose in a first attempt, to change the license of the images to CC BY-SA-NC: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/
In Art. 32: It seems that images can be used freely without express permission of the author for educational o scientific investigation purposes. But I need help from other to ensure to not wrongly interpret this article of the law. Is there a group or team for such issues? Nerve net (talk) 10:55, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Changing to NC would make them incompatible with Commons, i.e. resulting automatically in deletion. As the problem has been ignored (by us all) for 3 years, we don't need to hurry now. I think I will open (likely not today) a regular (slow) DR for the 3 images from 2019 (other photographer) and 2021 (you) in order to get an evaluation/interpretation of the actual FoP-related jurisdiction in Spain wrt to "permanently installed". In case the result is negative (for our images), I would propose that either you or somebody from Wikimedia-Espana talks to the organizing gallery about the problem and its solution. --Túrelio (talk) 11:06, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Ok. Nerve net (talk) 11:10, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
When creating a new cat for the 2018 event (Category:Meninas Madrid Gallery 2018), I discovered that the problem is even more complex, as File:Ochenta Meninas inundarán Madrid esta primavera de la mano de Madrid Capital de Moda 01.jpg (and more images) seems to have been released by a local newspaper (from where our uploader it has taken) under a free license. But whether that license is valid in this case is also questionable, as it concerns the copyright of the artist and as FoP is clearly not applicable (indoors). --Túrelio (talk) 11:23, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Sorry, but what stands FoP for? Nerve net (talk) 11:34, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
Freedom of panorama. --Túrelio (talk) 11:35, 5 December 2022 (UTC)
One last thing about this temporary exposition.
These sculptures will be sold at a charity auction after the temporary exhibition. The temporary exhibition will end on December 15th. So the owner of the sculptures will change.
So far I know the sculptures of the prior exhibitions were also sold in charity auctions. Nerve net (talk) 12:15, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
Ok, though ownership is legally not relevant for copyright, which remains by the artist, if not actively transferred to the buyer. I'll try to open the DR until tomorrow. --Túrelio (talk) 17:11, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Warning

Hi Nerve net. I noticed that you've made a malformed deletion request: omitting subpage and transclusion. Here, Delete is not for speedy deletion, please see COM:DP. When you want to delete a page by manually using the Delete template (rather than the automatic Nominate for deletion or Nominate category for discussion tool in the Tools menu on the sidebar per COM:DR#Starting requests and COM:CFD#Starting requests), you must follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion (or Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually policy or the "By hand" portion of COM:CFD#Starting requests, normally collapsed), otherwise you will create a lot of work for other people. Warning: such edits are not tolerated and have led to account blocks, as "We cannot work here with people who are not willing to follow our procedures, in particular for deletion requests." You could also have used G7.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 02:01, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Hello Nervenet, Your upload quality is amazing and your edits don't need regular patroling, can you please request autopatrol at RFR? Your (fantastic) edits clog up the patrol lists, and you getting autopatrol would decrease the work on patrollers. Thanks for your contributions!

As we step into a new year, we’re happy to invite you to take part in “Your Most Memorable Shot 2025.

Since 2018, photographers from across the Wikimedia community have come together at the beginning of each year to share the photographs that meant the most to them over the past twelve months. Now in its eighth iteration, this tradition continues to be a space for reflection, storytelling, and celebrating meaningful moments through photography.

Whether you are a member of the Commons Photographers User Group or not, you are warmly welcome to participate and invite others too. Every image carries a story, and your perspective helps enrich this collective showcase.

Whenever you’re ready, please select your most cherished photograph from 2025 and share it on the designated page.

The deadline for submissions is 28 February 2026, so we hope you’ll join us before then.

We look forward to discovering the moments that made your year memorable and to continuing this wonderful tradition together.

Warm regards, -- Suyash Dwivedi (💬) 22:36, 4 January 2026 (UTC) (CPUG)

Wiki Loves Folklore 2026 has started, Join us!

Hello Nerve net,

The world’s traditions are disappearing faster than we can document them, but you can help change that.

On behalf of the Wiki Loves Folklore International Team, we are reaching out to invite you to contribute to the 2026 edition of our global campaign.

Share Your Cultural Heritage with the World

Wiki Loves Folklore is an international media contest dedicated to documenting the "intangible" beauty of our cultures. Whether it’s the vibrant colours of a folk festival, the rhythm of a traditional dance, the secrets of a family recipe, or the legends of your hometown, your media helps preserve these legacies for generations to come.

How You Can Contribute Participating is simple, and every upload contributes to the world's largest free knowledge repository:

 • Capture: Take photos, record videos, or capture audio of folk activities, music, mythology, or traditional wear.
 • Upload: Share your files on Wikimedia Commons between 1 February 2026 and 31 March 2026.
 • Win: Beyond the satisfaction of preservation, there are international prizes for the most impactful contributions.

Ready to get started? Click here to upload your media now or visit the Main Project Page for full rules and category details.

Your perspective is a vital piece of the global cultural puzzle. We can't wait to see the folklore you bring to life.

Warm regards,

#WeTogether

Announcing the Winners of Picture of the Year 2025!

Hi everyone,

Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.

Here are your top three winning images:

You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results

I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!

Regards,
ZI Jony

Commons Photographers: Our next meeting (05/2026)

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I hope you’re well and enjoy your time as a photographer on Wikimedia Commons. In my role of the new chair of the user group, I have a couple of updates to share with you.

After the election, the new board met for the first time on March 21 and immediately got to work. We elected the organization’s officers and decided to move from quarterly to monthly board meetings. We believe meeting more frequently will create more opportunities to serve our members effectively and help move the group forward.

We also successfully applied for a pre-conference at the upcoming Wikimania in Paris (July 21–25). If you’re planning to attend the conference, please consider joining us on July 21th for a day full of conversations about photography and Commons. Please sign up here if you’re interested.

And finally, it’s my pleasure to invite you to our first online meeting, which will take place on May 31. Our member Wojciech, an experienced concert photographer, will give a talk on photographing orchestras during live performances. I’m especially excited that we’ll have the opportunity to meet online again and am very much looking forward to this event.

Please feel free to sign up for our first meeting in 2026 on this page: Online Meeting on May 31st.

In the meanwhile, I hope you're well and have a great time taking photos!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 14:09, 20 May 2026 (UTC)

Invitation to the Wikimedia Commons Pre-Conference at the Wikimania 2026

Hello Nerve net,

I want to invite you to participate at our Wikimedia Commons Pre-Conference at the Wikimania in Paris on July 21. If you want to join the pre-conference, please sign up on this page until July 7. Participation at the pre-conference is also possible without a ticket for the Wikimania. If you sign up before the deadline on July 7, you will get free access to the pre-conference day. Unfortunately, online participation will not be possible.

If you have something you want to present or you want to talk about at the pre-conference, please add it here, also until July 7.

There is also a service announcement for all photographers coming to Paris: Unfortunately, France has no freedom of panorama at all. Therefore, Commons does not accept photos of modern buildings, public art or light installations at night. Read more about the problem here.

Besides the invitation to our pre-conference, there is another announcement: We updated the membership list of the Commons Photographers User Group. The membership list is much smaller now and based on a template. This allows us to easily create message lists and statistics. Please have a look at your entry in the list and update it if needed.

Happy photographing! GPSLeo (talk) --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 19:10, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
