Paintings by John William Godward

Commons galleries are pages consisting of images and possibly captions created using the <gallery> markup. Lists of this sort belong in WP, not here. My apologies if I misunderstand, but in creating that page I thought I was merely reproducing a well established page format that is found for many different artists (such as here or here), all of which being categorized here. Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2024 voting is open!

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2024 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Galleries

You have put a good deal of work into Paintings in Musée Magnin and Paintings by François-Xavier Fabre. Unfortunately, they do not meet Commons requirements for galleries which uses the <gallery></gallery> format and a simple caption. Encyclopedic content is not permitted.

I have not yet deleted them. I will do so tomorrow. I suggest you take them to WP:EN where they should be welcome. You could also strip off everything but the file names and captions and leave them on Commons. .     Jim . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 20:14, 8 October 2025 (UTC)

Hi,

Since the last time you messaged me about the inappropriateness of this kind of page (last year), a hundred or so of these very pages have been created by other users, and have stayed on wiki commons without, to my knowledge, any intervention from your side. They are all listed here. They are all galleries, and do not use the <gallery></gallery> format. They are a part of the project Commons:WikiProject sum of all paintings. I asked you last year why the page I created was going to be deleted while others like it were created, to which you gave no reply, then proceeded with the deletion. I want to follow the projects' guidelines as much as you want me to follow them, but your deleting this page follows a guideline which apparently applies only to me.

Now I hope we can clear our misunderstanding of the situation here, but as Edelseider, who is a frequent contributor to that kind of content, recommended me, if we can't reach a satisfying clearing up, which we couldn't achieve the last time the matter was brought up, I'll bring the matter to the administrators' noticeboard, where I hope to be informed why the pages I create in this format are deleted, while the pages other users create aren't. Commons has no good method for looking at all new pages. Many experienced users, including Edelseider, have the Autopatroller flag set. I see only new pages put up by less experienced editors, such as yourself, that are not Autopatrollers, so I have no way of seeing the other difficult pages. I would be happy to have the matter discussed at AN, but I suggest you read COM:Galleries. The format of your galleries is identical with those on WP and, of course, Commons does not exist to duplicate WP. .     Jim . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me)

@Jameslwoodward: Those galleries have existed on Commons from time immemorial, and their purpose is not to serve as Wikidata duplicates, but to give Commons users who have no idea what Wikidata is and how it works the opportunity to check at one glance which paintings are already on Commons and which aren't. This is quite useful for Commons in order to avoid duplicates on Commons. If you believe that this is bullcrap and a no-good principle (you may very well!), I suggest you open a discussion about that subject in a place where more participants can join us. I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
