A way was found to confirm that this image below was licensed as 'cc by' at upload. Admin Para kept records of flickr license changes from Oct. 2006 to March 2007. It shows when the license changed--almost 1 or 2 weeks after you uploaded it. Unfortunately, flickrreview did not come into existence until mid-November 2006 and no one knew of Para's records until now.
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have grantedautopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Picture of the Year voting round 1 open
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:
Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.
Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.
Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Thanks for indicating your interest in this. Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results:
We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).
In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)
We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:
We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.
Thanks, the Picture of the Year committee

Dear The wub,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.
Strada has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.
In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Photos from this year are already being used on Wikipedia. WLM runs until the end of the month and you can take part as many time as you want - multiple pictures of the same site help get the full picture - so please add more and invite other people to take part. We are within touching distance of 1,000 photos for the UK, putting us just behind the United States in 14th place out of 49 countries taking part. Let's see if we can jump a few places! If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message here or contact me directly at richard.nevell@wikimedia.org.uk.
Thank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK
More than 300 people have contributed a total of 4,000 photos to this year's competition and we wanted to say thank you for helping us get this far. The competition runs until the end of September, and you can upload as many images as you want - so feel free to document some more sites. Or why not go through your old images to see if you have any others that could be submitted?
Since you've already submitted some pictures to the competition, you might be interested in the banner mini-contest; to take part you crop your images to a 7:1 and upload a new version. You can find out more about how to do that here. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the competition and share it with others! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 12:24, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

Searching for files on Wikimedia Commons mobile site
Hi, I was wondering if you are one of the people responsible for developing the search on the Wikimedia projects. On the desktop site of Wikimedia Commons, when I'm trying to look up something in the file or category namespace, it will show up in the search bar, which has been very helpful. However, this does not happen in the mobile site for Wikimedia Commons. Would you happen to know anything about this feature and if it would be possible to implement being able to search categories or files in the mobile site for Wikimedia Commons the same way as the desktop site? Thank you. Colohisto (talk) 23:59, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
Hi @Colohisto, no I don't have anything to do with the search. And for me at least it behaves the same on mobile, I am able to search for categories so long as I type "Category:" at the start. the wub"?!" 12:46, 3 May 2025 (UTC)

Announcing the Winners of Picture of the Year 2025!
Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
I noticed that you uploaded a few images using the Upload Workbench. It’s wonderful to see people trying out this new tool! It was created just two weeks ago during the Milan Hackathon.
The tool is still in beta and under active development, so there are still many flaws and rough edges. I would love to hear about your experience using it, what you enjoyed, what worked well, the features you liked most, any feature requests, or anything else you would like to share.
All user feedback is tremendously valuable to me and helps improve the tool. Daanvr (talk) 19:11, 14 May 2026 (UTC)
@Daanvr Hi, yes I was very excited to see this at the Hackathon as I've been dreaming of a tool like this for years! Did have a few bits of feedback from my use so far:
Granting it the ability to edit user css and javascript is scary from a security perspective. I might be wrong, but I think there is a grant you can request which only allows editing user json (which is all it appears to need)
Relatedly it does seem to make me log in with Wikimedia again on every visit, not sure if it can remember me for longer
The first time I tried the tab completely froze up when trying to copy/paste categories (so I just added them later with Cat-a-lot). But I tried again today and it worked fine, so maybe that's something you fixed recently.
It only seems to add the caption column as the wikitext description, not the structured data caption
But overall it's amazing! I plan to keep using it and will definitely share any more feedback. the wub"?!" 14:08, 16 May 2026 (UTC)
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Window in Brucciani's cafe, Morecambe 2026-06-07.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.
Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!
I believe the window design is covered by UK freedom of panorama. Stained glass certainly has been found to, so presumably this frosted glass would be also. the wub"?!" 07:16, 12 June 2026 (UTC)
Interesting point. I have no idea. So the question is if frosted glass is a "work of artistic craftsmanship" like stained glass as opposed to a "2D graphic work". Feel free to ask on COM:VPC about this and/or convert the tag to a DR. If you do I won't vote on it as I'm unsure if FoP-UK applies or not. - Alexis Jazzping plz 08:36, 12 June 2026 (UTC)
Invitation to the Wikimedia Commons Pre-Conference at the Wikimania 2026
Hello The wub,
I want to invite you to participate at our Wikimedia Commons Pre-Conference at the Wikimania in Paris on July 21. If you want to join the pre-conference, please sign up on this page until July 7. Participation at the pre-conference is also possible without a ticket for the Wikimania. If you sign up before the deadline on July 7, you will get free access to the pre-conference day. Unfortunately, online participation will not be possible.
If you have something you want to present or you want to talk about at the pre-conference, please add it here, also until July 7.

This is a deletion request for the community to discuss whether the nominated page should be kept or deleted. Please voice your opinion in the linked request above. Thank you very much!
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.
Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
