Question about Wikimedia Commons policy on uploading of images

Hello,

I am not sure what you like to know and if I have the information you want. In the precise case of this composite image, the images might be or might not be in the public domain (if they come from government officers), but I doubt the text is.

Now I can't say anything about the controversy about the article itself on en.wp. Regards, Yann 04:00, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

A criteria is that media in Commons should be useful for other projects. There obviously are if the article on en.wp is kept. Yann 04:51, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Hello, ERcheck!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:Senator JohnFKennedy.jpg has been nominated for deletion at

This is a deletion request for the community to discuss whether the nominated page should be kept or deleted. Please voice your opinion in the linked request above. Thank you very much!

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and if appropriate contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

@Yann: I do not believe there was any vandalism. Please assume good faith. All of the csd tags I added included an explanation of why I put them there, for example, "" These were only some of many photos uploaded by a person who had most of his contributions deleted, most for the same reason posting photos of identifiable people, taken in public places, without evidence of permission given. In Mexico, where most of the images I tagged were taken, being in a public place does not give permission to publish. ERcheck (talk) 17:06, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
- ERcheck (talk) 17:14, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
Hi, Your deletion request rationale is just nonsense. We do not need any permission for images of sport events. Anyway, this is a not valid reason for speedy deletions. Your edits only create more work for admins and others. Yann (talk) 17:53, 18 April 2025 (UTC)
My apologies to you. I misinterpreted Commons:Country specific consent requirements. It was in no way my intent to disrupt or make more work for you / other admins.. ERcheck (talk) 19:15, 18 April 2025 (UTC)

Renaming file

Hello again! I saw you request for renaming the photo of the soldier with a compass. I declined your request and renamed it a bit differently: File:US Marine wearing camo face paint navigating with a compass.jpg. For the sake of clarity, we try to avoid abbreviations of short words where there meaning might be ambiguous such as "US Marine w camo face paint navigating with a compass". The "w" was problematic. For categories here, there is a difference between "with cameo face paint" and "wearing cameo face paint", as this can also be understood as. Not all people here are good at English, hence the need for clarity. A person "with cameo face paint" could be standing next to such articles, but "wearing cameo face paint" means he has applied it on himself. When we name files here, we need to play a little 'Devil's advocate' and think how the title might be misunderstood. If you want some files renamed, you can just post a short message on my talk page, and I'll take care of it in the best way for you. I'm usually around, and it will be quicker for you. Best, --Cart (talk) 20:37, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

@Cart - Thanks. I appreciate your mentoring. I was tempted to ask for your help, but was reluctant to impose. I'll likely be sending a few more your way from my recent uploads that have similar naming. ERcheck (talk) 21:02, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
Don't worry, I've been taking care of newbies both here and on en-Wiki for years. ;-) So as long as you behave and we see that you are learning, you don't need to feel that you are imposing. It's just improving Commons. And I have a lot of friends in the military, so that area is not alien to me. --Cart (talk) 21:09, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

So that went well! :-D Your nominated image is now up on the official Commons:Featured pictures. I hope you got a taste for making more noms. We always have need of people who are good at hunting down and selecting good photos, and I can see that you have that ability. All the best, --Cart (talk) 22:30, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
@Cart: Thanks so much for your help and mentoring through the FP process! I'm enjoying finding and sharing photos. Though, sadly, I don't have the technical expertise to repair photos. I've been considering diving in, but a lot is going on IRL right now.
I found another photo that caught my imagination - here. I did some minor edits to brighten it (appended "edited" to file name). (1) What is your opinion on the photo? Quality? (2) Did my edits make it better? Worse? ERcheck (talk) 23:13, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
Visually and composition-wise, the photo is great. Unfortunately it has some technical faults. The detail in it is rather low, it has vingetting which in 99% of the cases is seen as something bad at FPC. It also has was we call 'artifacts', this is the "pixly" shapes that look like little boxes instead of film grain when you open the file and look at 100%. It also has a bit of purple CA, that is the purple "shadows" you see around especially the cords. Your edit did improve it with regards to the light, but the underlying faults are still there. You know by now that I'm super-picky about photos, but I'm only pointing out the things that might be grounds to 'oppose' the photo. If enough people are willing to overlook them, it might pass. FPC is always a bit of roulette, it depends on what users turn up to cast their votes. Some say yes to everything, and some are even more selective than me, others again have their own special "hang-ups". ;-) FPC is very much a "nothing ventured, nothing gained" game. Most of the times I just put on my rhino hide and dive in, thinking "what the heck, I can at least try". I think that overall, my success rate is about 60% now. I think that the photo that stands the best chance now is 'Rescue Ready'. --Cart (talk) 10:16, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
@Cart, Thanks so much for the feedback! The photo struck a chord with me, but I had my doubts about the technical aspects. I'm surprised to learn that your success rate is ~60%, especially given your artistry and technical skill. Wow! It makes FPC seem even more daunting.- ERcheck (talk) 13:36, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
The voters at FPC are mostly very conservative in their appreciation of photos. We call it National Geographic Style, "National Geographic isn't exactly the hub of artistic inspiration. They like their wild life in focus and without any personal comment", and most of the time I follow it, since it's the will of the predominantly male community here. I'm more of an "outside the box" sort of photographer, who from time to time tries to drag FPC kicking and screaming unto the 21th century. At the moment I'm "playing nice" and I don't make too wild or artistic nominations, since I don't have the strength for the ensuing battles, so my success-rate is high this year. You should see some of the controversies I've stirred up over the years. ;-) I think it's healthy for the FPC gang to be exposed to styles that exists out in the rest of the world. It's slow work, but in any case we are in a better place than just some years ago. --Cart (talk) 14:02, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
Hmmm. I need to tune my eyes to both see what others would appreciate while still seeing what I love. If you have a few minutes, see my potential FPCs - new additions - Peak Fitness and Mixi's March. - ERcheck (talk) 14:14, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
Like I've said before, I think you should start with 'Rescue Ready' and take it from there, but pre-analysing so many photos that aren't even your own is not something I'm into. (Even if new users tend to forget this just as soon as I've said it. ;-) ) If you want some feedback, there is always Commons:Photography critiques. You could try there, but they might be grumpy since this isn't about photos you yourself have created. Just nominate and try, that is the best way to learn, it needn't be perfect all the time. In fact, it's the same way marines learn to be so skillful: Repetition, repetition, repetition. --Cart (talk) 14:29, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

@Cart - I really like that photo. I'm also considering "Mixi's March" (I did a little correction) and "Incoming Craft" (there was a similar FP candidate not that long ago that got turned down, but I think this one has better composition and detail.) Thanks for your encouragement. - ERcheck (talk) 23:59, 10 June 2025 (UTC)

Regarding the following file and subsequent deletion:

File:Stained-glass window in the Ottawa Public Library - transparent background.png DELETE: COPYRIGHT violation. Taken from Ottawa Library, and not credited to uploader.

1) I took that photo. I have proof. 2) I edited it on Canva so that the image would have a transparent background. 3) I am the uploader, hence, should I credit myself? 4) How did you hastily jumped to the conclusion that this photo is a copyright violation such that I didn't took it?

How can I prove this? Especially when long-time users like you already make their minds in haste. So please let me know, because THIS IS MY PHOTO. Miguel Angel Omaña Rojas (talk) 05:53, 2 July 2025 (UTC)

Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:USAF F-15E Strike Eagle performs flare check - March 2025.jpg

Sometimes it's possible to add things with some creative editing. I used the Photoshop "fill in" feature + some creative editing of my own and made this version available on my Flickr. I also reduced some of the vignetting while I was at it. It's yours if you want it. Sometimes people think it's ok to add things like this, sometimes not. You can see how it was used on another nom recently: Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Reife Sonnenblume mit Herz bei Wohnau (Knetzgau).jpg. The Alt was added quite late in the process and I think that's why it didn't go through. The key is to be very open about what has been done. You can see how this was handled on the Alt version page: File:Reife Sonnenblume mit Herz bei Wohnau (Knetzgau) retouched v2.jpg. The "Retouched" template is essential! I have added 176 pixels to the top. --Cart (talk) 18:09, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

Would it require a new or alternate version nomination? Can the retouched version be uploaded over the original? I note an odd spot at the top of the retouched / added wing. How can that be removed? -- ERcheck (talk) 18:26, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
This version needs to be uploaded as a separate file and added as an 'Alternative' on the nom, since it is significantly altered. I'm not 100% sure what odd spot you mean. I did some tweaks to the Flickr version and updated that photo. If you uploaded this on Commons, you could place an image note on the file page so I could check it out and fix it. --Cart (talk) 18:46, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
Hmmm... or are you thinking about that white "knob" just beside the navigation light on the wing tip? That is a feature on this plane. I "borrowed" the one on the reconstructed wing from the one on the other wing. It's visible right under the big missile in the photo. I looked at the other photos of this plane to make sure every detail was ok. I might have missed something though. --Cart (talk) 19:13, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
The top left tip of the top wing... the largest download on Flickr is 128Kb, so it is hard to look close up at the wing. - ERcheck (talk) 20:24, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
I see what you mean. I looked at File:F-15E takes on fuel from KC-10.jpg. I would need the full sized version to upload. -- ERcheck (talk) 20:27, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't notice that you couldn't get the full size. I had uploaded it in full size, but I forgot to put the 'public domain' license on it. Without that license, Flickr apparently don't let you access the full size. Now fixed. They also have a notice about you might be needing Flickr Pro to get it. I don't know... As a backup, I have uploaded it to my Dropbox too. I just hope it doesn't come out as .png! Link. Hope something works. --Cart (talk) 21:51, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

The info looks great, just what is needed. I've added the cross-links for "other version" on both files. You are good to go. Years ago, I took this photo to FP. It also had just a wing tip missing. In this photo the ballerina to the left got a hand from another dancer. I hope this works for you, otherwise you have some examples to lean back on. --Cart (talk) 23:04, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

This nom had an 'Alt': Commons:Featured picture candidates/File:Indian Peacock courtship display at Pench national park (April, 2024) 08.jpg
You just add a subsection to your nom page. In your case it would be:
Alternative
*info Retouched version with some pixels added, see above. Also 'pinging' previous voters about this change:

I've completed adding the alternative nomination, and made a slight reword for clarity to the retouched tag. Please feel free to edit that, if needed for accuracy. - ERcheck (talk) 23:27, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
I hope you find/learn something useful with every nom. I just added some details to the RT-template. It's always better with too much info, if possible. And now I'll say Good night to you. :-) --Cart (talk) 23:37, 7 July 2025 (UTC)

ABX

Au sujet ABX, c'est la vraie source, mais vous ne pouvez pas supprimer et ni me bloquer. AB Mediawan (talk) 16:32, 26 September 2025 (UTC)

@AB Mediawan - I'm not sure what you are trying to say. I am not doubting that source, the issue is compliance with the licensing requirements of Wiki Commons. ERcheck (talk). 18:34, 26 September 2025 (UTC)

What is allowed

Hello @ERcheck, I wonder what is allowed on Wikimedia, for the images I upload, does the source need to explicitly say they are free to use under a said deed, like CC04? Wlaak (talk) 23:28, 29 September 2025 (UTC)

@Wlaak - See Commons:FAQ#Copyright_questions. Also, when you upload a file the first page gives you a lot of information on what is allowed. ERcheck (talk). 16:41, 30 September 2025 (UTC)
