GE P42DC locomotives of Amtrak
Please do not subdivide this category by route - that is not a useful category intersection to create. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:04, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Pi.1415926535 How is it not a useful category intersection? Individuals seeking to illustrate the use of such locomotives on a particular route would have a much easier time finding appropriate images due to this sub-categorization. SecretName101 (talk) 06:05, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
- It complicates the much more common use cases - wanting a picture of the locomotive class, or wanting a picture of a specific service - by forcing users to search through multiple categories. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:11, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Pi.1415926535 As of the moment, I have not removed those images from the parent categories of services, as photos show a fuller consist (with more than just a closeup of the locomotive), track scenery, or stations
- As for the locomotive category itself, a near 1,000 file category is typically frowned upon as impractical to navigate. We already subcatogize by operator, subcategorizing by service seems a sensible extension of that given how overpopulated the Amtrak subcategory is. SecretName101 (talk) 06:14, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Pi.1415926535 also, does the DeepCategory gadget not negate your concern? Those wanting to see every file in child categories at once have a gadget that grants them that ability, without the need for perpetually overpopulated categories. Is that not true? SecretName101 (talk) 06:20, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
- That gadget is only available for logged-in users. It is not a reason to create numerous subcategories with highly questionable usefulness (including the locomotive/paint scheme intersection categories). Please stop creating these intersection categories immediately. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:25, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
- I agree with Pi that this is not a useful distinction to categorize off of, and adds significant burdens to both uploaders and users. In the vast majority of cases, people looking for images of the P42DC don't care what route it's on, and people looking for images of a route are not going to care what locomotive is on it. 4300streetcar (talk) 07:07, 18 April 2026 (UTC)

- Given it's been 3 weeks, I moved the images back into the parent category and nominated the categories for speedy deletion as non-useful empty categories. 4300streetcar (talk) 04:33, 14 May 2026 (UTC)
Please do not!
Hello @SecretName101.
Please do not move files multiple times in succession, as happened with File:Mike Duggan (Detroit mayor) at charity preview event for the 2025 Detroit Auto Show (542640846362).jpg. This is 1. completely unnecessary and 2. CommonsDelinker does not replace the filename because it cannot find the file, unless you modify the bot command accordingly. (Special:Diff/1202110797. This can be found under User:CommonsDelinker/commands/filemovers. This should be done before an administrator passes it to the bot as a command. - Same for File:Mike Duggan (Detroit mayor) at charity preview event for the 2025 Detroit Auto Show (542640846361).jpg and File:Mike Duggan (Detroit mayor) at charity preview event for the 2025 Detroit Auto Show (54264084636).jpg. Please think of a filename first, then move the file, and not the other way around. I have deleted all the unnecessary redirects. זיו「Ziv」 • For love letters and other notes 14:30, 23 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Ziv Thank you for raising this, and explaining the technical concerns regarding the CommonsDelinker. SecretName101 (talk) 02:10, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- @Ziv Sometimes a file move accidentally includes an error needing remedy; and sometimes further details of a photo become apparent after the first move (thus a further move would give it a more accurate/specific title). But, I will always be careful to check whether there is a still-pending commons delinker that has been created for the initial move in such cases, to avoid/remedy the issue you raise. I will also work to avoid errors in file moves and to make details as-accurate in the first move as I can, to avoid any impetus for further moves. Is that satisfactory, or is more needed to address the concern? SecretName101 (talk) 05:41, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- That's okay. These things happen. Just don't forget to adjust the bot command correctly at the end, or open all language versions in which a file is used beforehand and check if they used the actuall filename after the moves. If necessary, replace a filename manually. Thanks alot. Best regards, זיו「Ziv」 • For love letters and other notes 06:49, 24 April 2026 (UTC)
- Can you also please stop renaming files to ridiculously long titles??? File:Blake Martinez (Green Bay Packers player) during pre-season game against Denver Broncos on August 26, 2017 in Denver, Colorado.jpg is too descriptive. It's unnecessary and burdensome when actually trying to use the file. The picture title is not meant to be its full description! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 18:07, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

- @Gonzo fan2007 I was blocked from uploading any new files indefinitely, the sticking issue being that the blocking admin believes past uploaded files had insufficiently descriptive filenames. I was instructed by the blocking admin that file names must be highly specific.
- The admin who imposed by block insisted:
- files such as "Neponset River (53927241312).jpg" are impermissibly vague, and should be renamed to something highly descriptive like "Neponset River west from the Harvest River Bridge, March 2023"
- The aforementioned admin also cited as impermissible file names such as:
- The aforementioned admin has also contended that filenames such as "File:Albany-Rensselaer Station (47775488151).jpg" are not descriptive, and instead insists on names such as "File:West platform at Albany-Rensselaer station, April 2019.jpg"
