Mitternachtssonne

Moin.

Hi Lukas, Thanks for reaching out to me in relation to this image I took of my shadow on August 8, 2007. I am perfectly fine with you writing to me in German. I understand written German fairly well, but do not feel I can express myself sufficiently accurate in German, so I will reply in English. Your question took me 18 years down memory lane and I do remember the evening quite clearly. You are correct that at this time of the year in 2007 there was a sunset and a sunrise. The midnight sun period for that summer actually ended already July 23 at 01:11 am local time according [date and time https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/@3418912?month=7&year=2007]. I recall seeing that although I do not recall the exact date. On August 8 the sun set at 23:04 and rose again at 4:12 on August 9 according to [date and time https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/@3418912?month=8&year=2007]. My own recollection of the evening was that the sun set a few minutes past midnigth, and I noticed that just around midnight just before the sun was setting my shadow was extremely long and I thought that could be an interesting picture to take. I can see on the EXIF data for the image on the file page it says 00:10, 9 August 2007. Now, the clock on my camera was not automatically synchronized with any data source. I recall setting the time to the local time when I arrived May 31 2007, and I consider it likely to be accurate within a few minutes here a few months later and this is why I used the term "in midnight sun" for the file name as at midnight local time the sun was not yet completely set. Now the date and time site says suset was 23.04 and I have the recollection of a few minutes past midninght, which seems to be likely based on the image EXIF data, so I am a little confused about the origin of the 1 h offset. I see the date and time site assume summer time was used, but I do not recall if there was summer time that year in Greenland, but summer time could perhaps be the resons for my perception of having sun at midninght. I hope that explains. -- Slaunger (talk) 18:43, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
Daylight saving time can be very deceptive. This summer, I was at the North Cape in northern Norway, and I really wanted to stand on the plateau at midnight. I managed to do that, but I had to wait until 1 a.m. because daylight saving time (in my opinion, a sin) also applies in Norway. As far as I know, it also applies to Greenland. Thank you for your reply and for the pictures from Greenland. Lukas Beck (talk) 19:31, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
