First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Location

Zdravím. Dovolil jsem si revertovat tuto vaši editaci. Nevím, z jakého zdroje nebo jakým nástrojem odečítáte souřadnice Vy, ale vzhledem k tomu, že podle mapy.cz odpovídá poloha souřadnicím, které jsem k obrázku uvedl já, a vzhledem k tomu, že na stránce, kterou Commons nabízí pro vyhledání cíle podle souřadnic, se odkaz na mapy.cz uvádí pro cíle v České republice na prvním místě (a také naprostá většina ostatních snímků ze Strašnic je popsána pomocí souřadnic z mapy.cz), tak bych se původního údaje držel, třebaže nedokážu posoudit, není-li souřadnicová síť užívaná mapy.cz nějak posunuta. Vámi uvedené souřadnice odpovídají na mapách mapy.cz křižovatce Krupské a Nučické ulice severovýchodně od kostela, nikoliv blízkosti křižovatky Krupské a Kolovratské, odkud snímek pochází. --ŠJů (talk) 04:01, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Dobrý den, pozici jsem určil pomocí Google Earth. Teď jsem ji ještě ověřil na mapy.cz a je to téměř, jak jsem to zamýšlel (mělo by to být ještě trochu na sever). Když jste fotografoval musel jste stát přibližně na tom místě, které jsem určil, protože po levé straně vidíte zídku okolo kostela a v levém dolním rohu snímku je vidět roh mezi ulicemi Krupská a Nučická. Křižovatka Kolovratská - Krupská je na snímku před námi (odbočuje na ní tmavé auto - asi Favorit - doprava). Bydlím kousíček od toho místa a chodím tam téměř každý den, takže se odvažuji říct, že to tam znám velice dobře. --Pabouk (talk) 08:44, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Omlouvám se, máte dočista pravdu. Jsem já to sklerotik, už ani nevím, odkud jsem co fotil. Já měl za to, že ta zídka vlevo patří k tomu ostrůvku na náměstíčku, ale jak je vidět z jiného úhlu, nic takového tam není. --ŠJů (talk) 11:31, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

You are formally right, and so are the ones who name lemmata on WPs. On the other hand, nobody would ever doubt that "van Gogh" would, if not explicitely declared otherwise, refer to some piece of art created by, or to the artist himself, _V.i.n.c.e.n.t__W.i.l.l.e.m__v.a.n__G.o.g.h__the_mentally_disturbed_artist_and_genius__who_shot_himself_by_the_end_of_19th_century_and_became_fashionable_immediadely_afterwards_.

Therefore, any name longer than "Vincent van Gogh" is just stuff, which in this case (the template:Creator) waists space on every viewer's screen, disturbing and ennoying most of them at long term. eod. Wolfgang 12:11, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Dear 212.202.113.214, I have not forged anything. I have just removed the label which is not part of the image. I do not claim any personal rights to the image :)) This is perfectly according to the CC-BY-SA 3.0 Germany licese. The image contained both unnecessary border and text. Both are not desirable in Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons images. If you want to retain unmodified images from Bundesarchiv, please feel free to write a policy for this and include it to Commons:Bundesarchiv. Category:Close-ups of insects

I listed the category in categories for diskussion, because I think it is of no use. Details there.

In this case I treated it as supercat of Category:Brachycera heads. We can't list every head shot of an insect there. Kersti (talk) 21:17, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Yes, the categories are often a mess. I will take a look at the discussion. In the current state Category:Close-ups of insects is not a super-category of Category:Brachycera_heads. --Pabouk (talk) 21:54, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Announcing the Winners of Picture of the Year 2025!

Hi everyone,

Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.

Here are your top three winning images:

First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area.

I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
