New Caledonia - New Caledonia
New Caledonia is a sui generis overseas collectivity and a constituent part of the French Republic. It consists of a main island (Grande Terre) and several smaller islands located in the region of Melanesia in the southwest Pacific Ocean. It lies near ► Vanuatu, ► Fiji, ► Norfolk Island, ► New Zealand, and ► Australia. Since 1986, the United Nations Committee on Decolonization has included New Caledonia in the United Nations List of Non-self-governing Territories. In a referendum to be held on October 4, 2020, New Caledonia will decide whether to remain part the French Republic or to become an independent state. |
