Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Categories by city

Hello, Baidax. Thanks for the new categories you have created. I noticed that you used the template {{Catcat}} on some of them, such as the following:

Please not that the categories whose names start with "Signs in" should be tagged with {{metacat|city}} instead of the {{Catcat}} template. The others are fine with the template you used. @Auntof6: Thank you for pointing that out and letting me know! I'm taking this practice into account and will apply it next time. However, I didn't understand the difference between the two templates apart from some details in the text, if it's possible to explain. Moreover, given that the signs by department are also sorted by type, I think it would be consistent to group those by city when possible; I will thus create the remaining categories. Logo vectorisation request

Hi. I saw you work with svg so requesting you. de:Datei:East Bengal Club.svg in this there is a spelling mistake. Its written KolkaTTa instead of KOLKATA. It will be single T. @ArnabSaha: Hi! Sorry for this late response, I should have let you know. Thank you for your request. Unfortunately, after trying, I didn't manage to fix it as it should be in the original logo. Therefore, I asked on the Discord server of the French community and another person made the change that day. Hi @Bidgee: , you have asked for a speedy deletion request for an ambiguous case in view of its simplicity and should have been properly discussed on a talk page. In addition, you did not consider any possibility to at least add this file on Wikipedia pages on the principle of fair use, which I find very regrettable since it is a simple action. It isn't "ambiguous", the Aboriginal flag is as simple as you can get in simplicity but it is copyrighted in Australia. As what COM:L states, it must be freely licensed from the source country and COM:TOO Australia states most logos are not ok to be hosted on Commons. Not my task to upload as fair-use on Wikipedia. Bonjour Baidax. La double présence des coordonnées existe depuis que Wikidata a voulu prendre le pas sur les différentes wikipédias et commons. Je mets des coordonnées le pus précises possibles depuis 2008 sur commons, bien avant que Wikidata existe. Et je continue encore puisque souvent je crée des catégories sur commons que Wikidata ne connait pas encore : cimetières, monuments aux morts, etc.

Je sais bien que j'aurais pu rectifier Wikidata directement, ce que je fais parfois, mais tu aurais alors continué ton ménage sans penser à vérifier si les coordonnées de commons étaient similaires avec celles de Wikidata. P.S. vous pouviez de plus, en bonne manière et voyant que je suis un contributeur actif, me laisser un message préalablement pour résoudre cette situation. Ce fichier a été importé il y a maintenant un bout de temps et je ne connais plus l'auteur ; il me semblait avoir vu le blason figurer sur d'anciennes photos, faisant de cette production une œuvre dans le domaine public. Je me charge de contacter l'administration municipale à ce sujet et je vous prie de retarder la suppression éventuelle de ce fichier, qui jusqu'à présent n'a posé de problème. Путинские указы

От того, что русскоязычные пользователи Викисклада из принципа или не зная английского языка загружают файлы указов с русскоязычными названиями, совершенно не следует что все должны следовать этой практике. Тут не русский Викисклад, а интернациональный, следовательно предпочтителен английский. Hello @Rkieferbaum, I have removed your deletion request. The video was originally published under a CC-BY license, which was clearly indicated at the time it was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Although the license information has since been removed, an archived version of the file description page is available as evidence. This issue has already been addressed on my talk page. Après quatre longues années d'absence, le concours est de retour en France !

Toutes les informations sont disponibles sur la page dédiée : Wiki Loves Monuments 2025 en France. L'objectif du concours est toujours le même : photographier le patrimoine historique. Les monuments admissibles sont les monuments architecturaux (présents dans la base Mérimée) et les objets (dans la base Palissy), qu'ils soient classés, inscrits ou simplement inventoriés.

Hi @Lymantria! Thank you for your notification. I understand that you are carrying out your duties as an admin and wish to exercise greater caution rather than assess the substance of the matter. However, it seems to me more appropriate to enquire into the state of French copyright law and to request clarification where necessary, rather than to assert categorically that a signature requires permission. If the signature appears on official documents or open letters, it is therefore not of an artistic nature. There has, moreover, been a court ruling concerning the legal status of Picasso’s signature (TGI Paris, 25 sept, 2014, 3^e ch. 1er sect. I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.

Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!

Building of the Saving bank of Moulins

Bonsoir, je vois que tu as renommé des caisses d'épargne. Mais il y a une erreur, ce n'est pas la caisse d'épargne de Moulins (ou de toute autre ville) mais du bâtiment de la caisse d'épargne à Moulins. Il n'y a pas de caisses d'épargne de villes. La catégorie devrait donc être "Building of the Savings bank in Moulins". Avec toutefois la stupide traduction du nom de l'entreprise qui ne rime à rien. Il n'y a pas de catégories "National Bank from Paris-Parilow", "Electricity from France", "Buildings of the Spring in Paris" ou "Frank Holland". Birdie (talk) 20:29, 8 June 2026 (UTC)

Bonjour @Birdie, je vais poliment ignorer l'élégant emploi de « stupide ». La tendance vers un réseau consolidé de Caisse d'épargne n'est apparue qu'à la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, avec la marque nationale qui n'en est qu'une conséquence. La construction historique est inverse à celle observée pour d'autres banques centrales qui ont cherché à diversifier les implantations, comme la Société générale ou le Crédit lyonnais. Les caisses d'épargne ont effectivement été, à leur commencement, des initiatives municipales ou privées, qui étaient des structures distinctes, généralement par arrondissement autour d'une ville centrale. Ces bâtiments n'ont pas été édifiés avec coordination, par organisation mère, mais selon une tendance générale à la Belle Époque. Les dénominations, que j'ai uniformisées, sont celles qui ont (et sont historiographiquement) majoritaires dans les écrits ; cela concerne également la documentation architecturale en anglais, qui utilise le terme de savings bank. Ainsi, il convient de ne pas appliquer des lunettes contemporaines à des dénominations historiques et architecturales, valides dans leur traduction. Enfin, la préposition of est d'usage en anglais et sur Commons, in ne l'est pas (seulement dans d'autres langues, comme le polonais) : on peut citer, à titre d'exemple, la construction « Town hall of ».
