First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.
Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.

Help desk

May I strongly suggest that you don't try to help people on the Help desk unless you actually can be helpful to them? In particular, your recent edits at COM:HD#Can i upload a picture of a murder victim from a news article? did nothing but add confusion. - Jmabel ! talk 18:47, 6 April 2026 (UTC)

That's fine and I do apologise. However... I'm here to contribute like everyone else so whatever opportunity I can do to help, whether it'd be reverting vandalism, re-categorising images, helping out on AN/I etc. Ideally in the next 2-4 years I'd like to be an administrator. Can you please get an admin to nuke all my uploads Alexis Jazz. Mr.choppers reverted an IP who added my images to enwiki but without probable cause. I'm tired of this wiki, its affecting my mental health. I'm in tears right now, i'm stressed out, i need help but i'm afraid if i retire all my contributions to galleries will be reverted. Hi LuvsMG481. I noticed that a deletion request you made was not done correctly.

This is not an unusual mistake, but I'm leaving you this message to help you get this right in the future.

There are several steps to making a deletion request (DR) correctly; among other things you must transclude the deletion into the correct daily DR list, and to notify the page creator and optionally other human (non-bot) editors of the page. By far the easiest way to do all of this correctly is to use the automatic Nominate for deletion or Nominate category for discussion tool in the Tools menu on the sidebar per COM:DR#Starting requests and COM:CFD#Starting requests, which takes care of all that using vetted Javascript. If you prefer to add the {{Delete}} template or {{Category for discussion}} template manually, you are required to follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion (or Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually policy or the "By hand" portion of COM:CFD#Starting requests, normally collapsed). Again, though, there is no need to follow complex instructions if you use the automatic tools.

Also worth knowing: on Commons, {{Delete}} is not a "speedy delete" request like it is on many other projects; instead, it starts a discussion of whether the file should be deleted. If you think a particular media file really obviously does not belong on Commons, see the instructions at Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion. Common cases that are better handled with a speedy delete than a DR include:

Common bad reasons people have for making DRs in the first place include:

  • after renaming a category, trying to delete the resulting redirect in violation of policy COM:CATRED
  • making a DR for a file where there is already a current DR
  • trying to delete one's own work within 7 days (use {{G7}} instead)
  • placing {{Delete}} on the deletion subpage itself, or on a talk page.

Also, please don't use {{Ffd}} (that's an English Wikipedia thing).

I'm sorry. As I said in prior edits, I'm relying on automated tools to help me. Commons has a lot of very unusual stuff which are foreign to me and I'm relying on automation to help with ensuring I can make as many edits to ensure we are contributing to the best of my ability. Try cross-wiki uploads

If you have an itch to "clean up Commons", look no further than cross-wiki uploads. It's frequently riddled with copyvios.

I wrote a little script to automatically load thumbnails there, you can use it by adding this to User:LuvsMG481/common.js:

@Alexis Jazz: The new default skin Vector (2022). I also tried Monobook. I have nothing above "Track the most recent changes to the wiki on this page." but a Twinkle Global dropdown and a 3-dot menu with Adiutor options. You want to be an administrator

On this page you said "Ideally in the next 2-4 years I'd like to be an administrator."
On Commons:Deletion requests/File:S7300046.JPG you say "Ideally, next year or so, I'd like to be an administrator". (at this rate we can expect your RFA in two weeks?)
Ironically, most people who want to be an administrator should never become one. Filing hit-or-miss deletion requests doesn't help you with that either. You really want to be an administrator? Leave comments on existing deletion requests with solid arguments for keeping or deleting the files in question. That helps existing administrators a lot as it's easier to close a request that has been commented on, and it shows your ability to make a fair judgment. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 01:59, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
