Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:52, 10 September 2010 (UTC)

Your VFC installation method is deprecated
Hello MBH, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:23, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

User:NBS/cyrlat in files titles
NBS (talk) 17:07, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
MBH (talk) 17:13, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
User:NBS/cyrlat in files titles +. NBS (talk) 17:55, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
NBS (talk) 17:55, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
User talk:Den1980-#Defaultsort
Sealle (talk) 18:02, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
MBH (talk) 18:20, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
Sealle (talk) 18:44, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
Sealle (talk) 18:45, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.
Possible acceptable uses of this ability:
- To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
- To perform file name swaps.
- When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)
Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.
The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators.

Thanks for uploading File:MBHbot through the eyes of a neural network.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with cc-zero to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

MBH 21:25, 17 July 2024 (UTC)
--A.Savin 10:41, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
MBH 11:06, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
MBH 11:09, 20 July 2024 (UTC)
MBH 12:57, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
MBH 13:00, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
MBH 13:06, 20 January 2025 (UTC)
--A.Savin 20:16, 21 January 2025 (UTC)

- @Yuval CT what was the problem with all of these files? It was a mass upload from an external site after receiving an OTRS approval. MBH 05:00, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Yuval CT, All files from the Dynamomania website are available under a Creative Commons license, see. Template:Dynamomania. --Mitte27 (talk) 06:24, 29 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Yuval CT Could you please revert your deletions? As two users pointed out above, Dynamomania gave a permission to upload files by CC-BY-SA (OTRS approved) as indicated in the template above. I don't really understand why you didn't look on template which was present in ALL of the files before deleting them. Well very well (talk) 09:54, 29 December 2024 (UTC)

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:Russia Is My History exhibition hall (Yekaterinburg) 04.jpg
| This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Russia Is My History exhibition hall (Yekaterinburg) 04.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

Revert
BTW, there was a discussion on the Village Pump recently and the consensus there was that the "associated with" categories are nonsensical and don't follow the guidelines. I don't care if you want to put the logo in a more descriptive category then I did, but Category:Logos associated with nuclear industry should be deleted anyway. Adamant1 (talk) 04:54, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Adamant1 shouldn't you delete also Category:Logos associated with technology and entire Category:Logos by association? MBH 05:06, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
- Not every single "by association" category is worth getting rid. Just the more nonsensical ones that are pointless and/or duplicate exiting category schemes. That said, I've been going through Category:Logos associated with technology and I'll probably nominate it for deletion once the logos in it have been dealt with. I'm only one editor and it's not a simple process though. --Adamant1 (talk) 05:09, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
Rollback right given

I have granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe I can trust you to use rollback correctly by using it for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it to revert-war. In addition, I noticed that you've made a malformed deletion request, as linked above: not including year, month, or day; not creating the subpage; not notifying; and not transcluding. Here, Delete is not for speedy deletion, please see COM:DP. When you want to delete a page by manually using the Delete template (rather than the automatic Nominate for deletion or Nominate category for discussion tool in the Tools menu on the sidebar provided by the AjaxQuickDelete gadget per subpolicy procedures COM:DR#Starting requests and COM:CFD#Starting requests), you MUST follow the instructions in the template, including the "Click here to show further instructions" portion (or Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually policy or the "By hand" portion of subpolicy procedure COM:CFD#Starting requests, normally collapsed), otherwise you will create a lot of work for other people. Warning: such edits are not tolerated and have led to account blocks, as "We cannot work here with people who are not willing to follow our procedures, in particular for deletion requests." — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:27, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
Category deletion
Hi, I noticed that you deleted Category:Aircraft at the Aviation Museum of the UMMC Museum Complex, it was a structured sub-category of Category: Collections of aircraft by museum which currently has 390 members. The aircraft in this museum can no longer be easily found. Nimbus227 (talk) 06:29, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Nimbus227 I don't understand: renamed category is still a member of "Collections of aircraft by museum". MBH 11:36, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- It is not in the consensus format of 'Aircraft at x museum' plus there is no redirect from the deleted category, users can not find the category by typing in 'Aircraft at x museum' which auto completes when enough text has been entered. These categories are meant specifically/only for aircraft exhibits, general interior images are categorised under the museum parent category and other exhibits are also kept there or sometimes in 'Collections of x museum' like Category:Collections of the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Further, the aircraft engine categories are a sub-category of the 'aircraft at' categories, users find the categories by first searching for the aircraft category. Category:Aircraft engines at the Aviation Museum of the UMMC Museum Complex is now equally difficult to find. Nimbus227 (talk) 11:54, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- The Commons policy not being followed here is Commons:Categories#Selectivity principle, We should not classify items which are related to different subjects in the same category. There should be one category per topic; multi-subject categories should be avoided. The category name should be unambiguous and not homonymous. Nimbus227 (talk) 12:49, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- You could create a redirect from old name. My reason for renaming was I upload a set of files depicting not aircraft, but just building interior, for example elevators. If you think it's important, you could split the category into "interior" and its subcategory "aircrafts in". MBH 12:49, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- I do think that it's a very important Commons policy. I have restored the category and re-added the images that were in it, they need further categorisation by aircraft type in good time. 'Interior of x museum' does not have a parent category in Category:Museums that I can see. Many museums, including this one, have indoor and outdoor exhibits and it would be over-categorisation to split them into indoor and outdoor categories. The preposition 'at' is normally used in museum category names because it covers both indoor and outdoor cases where 'in' limits the category to indoor images only. Nimbus227 (talk) 15:05, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Nimbus227 I also propose to shorten all category names from ".... Aviation Museum of the UMMC Museum Complex" to ".... UMMC Aviation Museum". If you're not object, I will do it with my bot. MBH 10:57, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- Please don't do that, use the talk page of each category to propose and discuss first, consensus to change is needed. Some names are long but not many, they are usually abbreviated in file names for convenience. Often, the shortened English version of a museum name is given on its website, that is the title that is usually used for categories. The category title should also align with the Wikipedia article if it has one, this makes Wikidata and Commons category linking simple (Wikipedia pages are placed in maintenance categories where the names do not align). Nimbus227 (talk) 12:21, 2 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Nimbus227 I still don't see reasons not to do that. In Russian Wikipedia we assume consensus isn't needed to change a page created yesterday, because such page has no consensus version. Your opinion against my opinion, there is no "consensus version". This sub-museum (Aviation) has no official English title, and shortening category name without loss in meaning is valid reason for renaming for me. I already did it on Category:Interior of the UMMC Aviation Museum. MBH 12:28, 2 April 2025 (UTC)

MBH 15:44, 14 June 2025 (UTC)
MBH 18:18, 14 June 2025 (UTC)

Thank you! |

File copyright status
Welcome to Wikimedia Commons. While everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the project, one or more of your file uploads had missing or false information regarding its source and copyright status. Please note that Wikimedia Commons takes copyright rules and infringement very seriously. Files may only be uploaded and included if their copyright status meets the conditions stated in our licensing policy, and if their source is clearly documented. Files that fail to meet those conditions may be deleted, and users who fail to meet them may be blocked. Please follow our first steps, if you haven't already. If you have questions, feel free to ask at the Village Pump copyright question page or on my talk page. Thank you.
