In particular, we have multiple upload tools, so "странице загрузки" is a bit confusing. So is "Википедии" being mentioned anywhere on this site: this is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia.

Can I update a sports team logo?

If a sports team logo is outdated can I upload the new one? Yeahhellyeah (talk) 06:08, 9 April 2026 (UTC)

Hi Yeahhellyeah. Whether can upload a new/updated version of a logo to Commons generally depends on the complexity of the logo, among other things. Some logos are too complex/creative to be uploaded to Commons, except when they've been released by their copyright holders under a type of copyright license that's OK for Commons. Perhaps if you can provide a link to a website where the logo you want to upload can be seen, and then a link to the English Wikipedia article you want to use it in (assuming that's why you want to upload the logo), then someone can give you a more specific answer. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:05, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
I'm trying to update the logos of the following bandy teams from the official russian bandy federation website:
Stroitel Syktyvkar (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stroitel_Syktyvkar) and the new logo from http://www.rusbandy.ru/club/13/
Kuzbass Kemerovo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuzbass_Kemerovo_(bandy)) and the new logo from http://www.rusbandy.ru/club/5/
SKA-Neftyanik (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SKA-Neftyanik) and the new logo from http://www.rusbandy.ru/club/7/
Ak Bars-Dynamo Kazan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamo_Kazan_(bandy)) and the new logo from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamo_Kazan_(bandy) and the new logo from http://www.rusbandy.ru/club/4/
Sibselmash (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sibselmash) and the new logo from http://www.rusbandy.ru/club/9/ Yeahhellyeah (talk) 09:16, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
@Yeahhellyeah: Thanks for the additional information. All of those logos are, in my opinion, too complex to be uploaded to Commons unless you're able to get their respective copyright holders to give their COM:CONSENT for you to do so; you can't upload them to Commons without that consent because Commons doesn't accept fair use content of any type. You may, however, be able to upload them locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content if you feel you can find a way of using them that meets Wikipedia's non-free content use policy. For sports team logos, this generally means the logo is used for primary identification purposes in the main infobox or at the top of a stand-alone article about the team the logo represents. So, if all you want to do is to replace the logos being currently used in those bandy team article with more recent ones, that should be OK. As long as your sure the logos are authentic and being actually used by their respective teams, then you can upload them using the English Wikipedia Upload Wizard. You most likely will need to download the files to your computer or device first, but you should be OK if you just follow the upload wizard's instructions. Once you've uploaded a file, you just need to replace the older file's syntax in the main infobox with syntax of the one you uploaded. I suggest you try one first to see how the process works. You can always upload the rest at your leisure once you have a feel for how things work. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:33, 9 April 2026 (UTC)

When a photo is not available

I was working on an edit and noticed an artist did not have an available photo of themselves in the commons. She has an active website with an email address. I had a thought that there should be a page or I am requesting a feature addition that editors can enter the email address into a form and the form sends a friendly request directly from wiki commons to upload a photo. Dd3r1n0 (talk) 18:07, 9 April 2026 (UTC)

@Dd3r1n0: please read COM:THIRD, especially the section on what not to do. That will probably be enough to give you the background you'd need to pursue this. If you have some specific questions after you've read that, feel more than free to come back here and ask. - Jmabel ! talk 19:03, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
Thank you for the response, I am already good with free use vs fair use rules. The point of my post was a feature enhancement possibility for editors to easily send off an invitation for the (in this case artist page) to realize she does not have anything available for wikipedia to use. Dd3r1n0 (talk) 16:55, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
We have Commons:Permission requests (which, honestly, looks a little dead, I'm not sure if anyone is really following up). I personally do not believe that with all of the complexities involved in COM:THIRD and in what might or might not be available by way of pictures of any given person that there would be a way to automate writing such an email (especially because, unless we are specifically asking for a selfie, writing to the subject is almost always going to be a matter of asking someone for a picture that is copyrighted by someone else). And I certainly wouldn't want to see multiple people write such an email to the same person, that would almost certainly seem like harassment. But given that you say you already know the complexities, if you see a way to do this, far be it from me to stop you from fleshing out how this would work and taking some concrete proposal to COM:VP/P. - Jmabel ! talk 05:40, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
You can send her an email with a link to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:A_picture_of_you (en:Wikipedia:A picture of you), but it would have to come from you, not "Wikimedia Commons" - if we had a facility for he latter, as you suggest, it would end up being abused to send harassing emails. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:17, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
The email form I am suggesting would not be editable, the form would be a nice official but generic message from Wikimedia commons inviting the person in question to upload authorized images onto the commons. The email would come from a no reply wikimedia commons email address. The only thing an editor could add was the emails address. Then its out of the editors hands. At a later time if the person does upload images, a future editor noticing that this page could use some pictures will add them.
What you are suggesting, that I, a random editor, would send an email from a private email address, that has no connection to wikimedia and include a web link for them to click on would likely be received unfavorably. Dd3r1n0 (talk) 19:07, 11 April 2026 (UTC)

I cleaned up the Rider-Waite Smith tarot deck but is a departure from the original scans an improvement or derivative?

Hi folks,

Total noob here, so forgive the possible dummy question. For a project at work I needed a tarot deck and figured the most recognisable one was public domain, so I'd use that. On WikiCommons someone had lovingly scanned the original cards but they were still scans of physical objects - crooked, damaged in places, etc. I knew people sold very cleaned versions of these cards as decks even today, but looking online it seems those companies have not shared these art tweaks back to the commons. So I spent a day in photoshop cleaning these up, including drawing in where parts where missing (scratches, fading, folds, patch wear) and making all the art conform to the same dimensions and skew (including re-drawing borders in the same style in places to be less crooked).

I'd love to put these back in the public domain, and I can see that the way previous users have done that is just to overwrite the existing entries as an "improvement". Given the popularity, widespread use and cultural impact of these particular entries, I wanted to check: do you think these kinds of tweaks are an improvement in this case or a derivative work? Which I guess comes down to whether you think the spirit of the existing entries are to show the art in a usable form, or as a reproduction of the physical artefact?

I've just put my versions up on GDrive for now until I get a call here and figure out your metadata formats :)

Thanks for your time! YarnSpinnerTool (talk) 21:52, 10 April 2026 (UTC)

@YarnSpinnerTool: Hi, and welcome. Please use new filenames and link with other_versions until you get permission at COM:OWR.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:57, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
@YarnSpinnerTool and Jeff G.: It's not just a matter of "until you get permission at COM:OWR". This would not be an acceptable overwrite. Photos of actual objects in the world should not normally be overwritten with idealized versions. {{Derivative works}} (on the original) / {{Derived from}} (on your cleaned-up version) is the way to go. - Jmabel ! talk 05:47, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
Despite the good advice you have had here, you seem to have uploaded your files (e.g. File:The Sun (Rider-Waite Smith tarot deck).png without linking back to the originals. Please do so, and ask here if you need help with that. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 16:03, 12 April 2026 (UTC)

Uploading Files on Wikipedia Spanish

Film poster

I am the producer of an independent feature film. My production company owns the rights to our film's poster.

For the film's article, should I as the legal owner simply upload the poster to Wikimedia Commons? Since the poster is available on IMDb and other public sites, is there another way to bring the image over to Wikipedia?

Thank you. Neoptomes (talk) 00:51, 12 April 2026 (UTC)

@Neoptomes: As far as uploading it on Commons, there are basically two ways to do this. If there is a website or page that is obviously under control of the copyright-holder of the poster, then you can indicate a free license at that website, and you (or anyone) can upload to Commons, citing that page as the source and indicating that same license. If for one or another reason that is not practical (including that it may not be readily obvious that any particular website under your control would be associated with that copyright), then you'll have to go through the approach described at COM:VRT, where you can send an email granting the relevant free license.
If you are concerned only with getting it into the English-language Wikipedia, then you could also take the approach outlined in en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. This would only allow a low-res version, specifically as an illustration for use in a particular English-language Wikipedia (which must already have been accepted as an article before you can use this approach). - Jmabel ! talk 06:39, 12 April 2026 (UTC)

(via Google Translate) It already indicates your account name as the author and says it is your own work. It's not clear (at least via Google Translate) what additional you want to do. If you want a different form of your name to show up visibly, you would use [[User:Israelpr|WHATEVER YOU WANT VISIBLE]]. If you want the license to mention you explicitly, instead of {{self|cc-zero}} you would use {{self|cc-zero|author=WHATEVER CREDIT YOU WANT}}; that last credit can include links. For example, I use {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0|author=[[User:Jmabel|Joe Mabel]]}}.
By the way, it is very odd to offer a cc-zero license but be concerned with being credited. cc-zero means no one has to credit you.
If anyone can translate that all into Hebrew, please do. I wouldn't even be able to tell if the translation is correct, so I can't just run it through a translation tool and know if what came out made sense. - Jmabel ! talk 18:37, 12 April 2026 (UTC)

Music

Are you allowed to upload samples of music for a page that mentions a specific track? The page "Bully (Albumn)" specifically mentions the 3rd track "Father". I own this albumn and I think it'd be good to have a player under it containing a portion of the track (50s - 1m 20s), something that I have seen on other pages and think is good. Nburch08 (talk) 00:42, 13 April 2026 (UTC)

Not on this site (Wikimedia Commons). We never accept content on a "fair use" basis. Assuming you are talking about the English-language Wikipedia, and "Albumn" was just a typo, then their policy at en:Wikipedia:Non-free content would apply for an upload there, not here. - Jmabel ! talk 18:56, 13 April 2026 (UTC)

Indeed, the ISO code smp does not exist in Commons (Commons:Language templates). So it should be added as new language. --PantheraLeo1359531 😺 (talk) 16:48, 13 April 2026 (UTC)
Does anyone know where we would best ask to get a new language added? It would be easy enough to add language template for descriptions in the Wikitext (as long as someone knows how to write "Samaritan Hebrew" in Samaritan Hebrew) but adding a language for captions is a more specialized issue. - Jmabel ! talk 19:00, 13 April 2026 (UTC)

Usage of Artworks + Metadata

Hi Wikimedia Commons,

I hope you are doing well.

My name is Hannes, and I am currently working on a small project that involves building an artwork-based puzzle/learning application. As part of this project, I am using images and metadata from you, focusing on artworks that I have curated in my personal watchlist.

I am reaching out because I want to make sure that I am accessing and using Commons data in a way that is fully compliant with your guidelines and respectful of your infrastructure.

At the moment, I have implemented a Python script that: - retrieves files from my watchlist, - fetches metadata via the MediaWiki API, - and downloads resized versions of the images.

However, I am encountering rate limiting issues (HTTP 429 "Too many requests"), which suggests that my current approach may not be optimal or sufficiently aligned with recommended usage patterns.

I would therefore like to ask for your guidance on the following:

  1. What is the recommended way to programmatically retrieve a larger set of artworks (images + metadata) from Wikimedia Commons?
  2. Are there specific API modules, dumps, or services (e.g., structured data, SPARQL, or bulk datasets) that would be more appropriate for this use case?
  3. What rate limits or request patterns should I adhere to in order to avoid overloading your systems?
  4. Is there a preferred approach for downloading image files in bulk (e.g., via specific endpoints or caching strategies)?

My goal is to build this project in a responsible and sustainable way, and I would be very grateful for any pointers, best practices, or documentation you can share.

Thank you very much for your time and for maintaining such an important open resource.

Kind regards, Hannes Rokitte Hrockett (talk) 08:28, 13 April 2026 (UTC)

Clearly y’all love this minutia of uncharitable confusion. Good luck. MaverickMatthews (talk) 18:49, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
@MaverickMatthews: Please be aware that paid editing is highly discouraged if not wholly forbidden. So your agent may be blocked unless they disclose the connection with you. Also writing articles when there is a conflict of interest is also not welcome. Thanks, Yann (talk) 19:10, 17 April 2026 (UTC)

Regarding photo competition

I just wanted to confirm about the pictures i uploaded, were they successfully uploaded or not? Ubaidamn (talk) 23:20, 14 April 2026 (UTC)

@Ubaidamn: See Special:ListFiles/Ubaidamn. Let me know here if that fails to answer your question. - Jmabel ! talk 05:27, 15 April 2026 (UTC)

Categories

How do I add many images to a category at once? OliviaRigby (talk) 01:41, 15 April 2026 (UTC)

@OliviaRigby: There are quite a few ways. The key is to use VFC, but the details will depend on how you can get identify the files to which to add the category. Are we talking about some of your own uploads? Something you can readily find with a search (possibly including some files you wouldn't add to the category, but that makes it a little trickier)? Or something else? Once you answer that I can be more specific with the "how to". - Jmabel ! talk 05:30, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
These files are from the 1710s portrait paintings of women, and I'd like to move some of them into more specific categories (sorted by country). OliviaRigby (talk) 05:49, 15 April 2026 (UTC)

I did have Cat-a-lot, but I didn't know how to use it. I've just figured it out. Thank you! OliviaRigby (talk) 00:17, 16 April 2026 (UTC)

Map file

You see i try to put a map file i made on map chart one i tried was uuh list of countries ruled by a military junta in Africa and i uploaded it but it said failed to upload Dommer simpson (talk) 14:16, 15 April 2026 (UTC)

@Dommer simpson: Actually, I see nothing. This right here appears to be your first edit on this site (Wikimedia Commons). Can you be more specific about what you are trying to do? If you are trying to upload a file and that is failing, what upload tool exactly are you using (URL of tool, or name of tool)? What error message, exactly, are you getting? "it said failed to upload" isn't enough for anyone to work out what is happening here. - Jmabel ! talk 21:12, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
Obviously i used the upload button Dommer simpson (talk) 10:59, 17 April 2026 (UTC)

photo uploading

hi i'm trying to make a wikipedia page for a youtube channel and i'm uncertain about the rules of uploading photos. would putting their profile picture in the website count as a copyright violation? Thoughts-go-inconsequential (talk) 16:54, 15 April 2026 (UTC)

@Thoughts-go-inconsequential: Probably. I highly recommend reading COM:THIRD, it will probably tell you at least most of what you need to know. - Jmabel ! talk 21:13, 15 April 2026 (UTC)

Red Arrows

They say we cant upload logos, but what about the Red Arrows, since they have a logo on them, are we allowed to post them or are we not?

- OsamuBinDazai (Wikipedia newbie) OsamuBinDazai (talk) 20:58, 15 April 2026 (UTC)

@OsamuBinDazai: "the Red Arrows" is really vague, can you provide a link to what you are talking about?
Some logos are simple enough to be below the threshold of originality. Those are trademarked but not copyrighted; we can host them.
Also, some Wikipedias host low-resolution non-free logos specifically for use in particular articles; that does not involve this site (Wikimedia Commons). For example, you can see the English-language Wikipedia's policy on this at en:Wikipedia:Logos. - Jmabel ! talk 21:21, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
sorry about that, i meant the Red Arrows as in the British Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team. They have the RAF logo on the side of the aircraft. OsamuBinDazai (talk) 15:32, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
@OsamuBinDazai: the RAF logo, File:Logo of the Royal Air Force.svg, is on Commons as it was judged to be below the threshold of originality, so that shouldn't be a problem. Whether to upload photos which include a "trivial" amount of copyrighted material is explained at Commons:De minimis. TSventon (talk) 20:33, 16 April 2026 (UTC)

Making a template translatable

Hello, could someone help make {{AI modified}} into a translatable template? I tried a bit myself, but I don't think I did it right. Any help would be appreciated! Nosferattus (talk) 00:45, 18 April 2026 (UTC)

I am just sign up and want to know how to find copyright free content Singharunesh (talk) 03:03, 18 April 2026 (UTC)

@Singharunesh:
  1. Not a lot is truly copyright-free unless it is very old or very simple (so simple it is not eligible for copyright). I would guess that more than half of Commons content is copyrighted but free-licensed and most of the rest is so old that its copyright has expired.
  2. Generally if you do not really know just what you are doing, looking around the Internet for content that is in the public domain (that is, content that has no copyright) is going to be very frustrating. Probably about 95% of what is on the Internet is copyrighted and not free-licensed.
  3. So I don't think I can answer your question directly, but I'm going to suggest reading COM:THIRD, which might give you a good starting point for thinking about this from a more productive angle.
  4. That said, you might look at https://bsu.libguides.com/c.php?g=1186851&p=8680401 (though I believe they are wrong about Unsplash, which is no longer public domain), or any of a number of other lists of sites you might find by typing public domain sources into a search engine.
Jmabel ! talk 07:16, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
@Singharunesh: Hi, and welcome. In addition to the above, if you want to find copyright free content here, see Category:Public domain and the children thereof. Also, if you want to read about the public domain, see en:Public domain.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 08:11, 18 April 2026 (UTC)

File name swaps

Can someone who has the suppressredirect right mentioned here swap this file and this file's names, which I accidentally named incorrectly? (I request the first one have the second one's name and vice versa). Thank you! Delcoan (talk) 17:40, 18 April 2026 (UTC)

@Delcoan: will do. When you make a request like this, please try to have something in the description or elsewhere on the file page that makes it clear which is which, or the two names are liable to keep flipping back and forth as more than one person tries to help. - Jmabel ! talk 17:46, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
Okay, thank you! Delcoan (talk) 17:48, 18 April 2026 (UTC)
