Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Hi Shyamal - Merops cyanophrys has now been split from Merops orientalis; could you edit File:MeropsOrientalis.svg accordingly please, to split out the top image to a new file. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 01:31, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

Have removed cyanophrys, I don't suppose it is really needed. Can be recovered from the older version if ever needed. Shyamal L. (talk) 11:28, 27 November 2021 (UTC)

The Modern Review

Hello Shyamal, hope you're doing well. While browsing images for D. P. Roy Chowdhury, I reached the category The Modern Review to which you've contributed. Thanks for uploading the wonderful images! I'm interested to know more about a few people. Do you have the access to the text articles as well that goes along with the images? Let me know about it. DesiBoy101 (talk) 02:32, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

@DesiBoy101: you can find the content at this place and if you want OCR-ed and searchable versions of the same, they are added to the Internet Archive and you can search the OCR text with the lens icon on the left at this page or run google searches with "site:archive.org" to help. Shyamal L. 02:49, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
PS: that university of calcutta site may ask for a password, just note the url - right click and copy the URL and use only the amazon content link portion - Shyamal L. 02:54, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for sharing the info. This is exactly what I was looking for. The Internet Archive serves my purpose well. Appreciate your help. DesiBoy101 (talk) 03:12, 19 June 2022 (UTC)

File:Jerdon Cleghorn Bourne.jpg

Hello Shyamal, wondering if it could be confirmed the person on the right (sitting in the chair) is William Jameson (botanist, born 1815), if positive a (cropped) file could be added to the article. Thank you for your time. Lotje (talk) 13:48, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

@Lotje: - yes that would be the same William Jameson. Shyamal L. 10:46, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you very much Shyamal, you just made my day I'll make a crop and add it to the article. Lotje (talk) 10:50, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
@Lotje: - sorry, I did not read your post carefully, the people are exactly as captioned in the file description from left to right (I have just added that now) "Photograph of John Lindsay Stewart Conservator of Forests, Punjab William Jameson (Suptd. Tea plantations), Thomas Jerdon, John Lindsay Stewart William Jameson (Suptd. Tea plantations) (standing) and Hugh Cleghorn" - so the crop you have made is of Hugh Cleghorn. Sorry, I did not read carefully enough. I thought you were copying from the image caption and asking me for confirmation... Shyamal L. 14:24, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, I moved the file now and replaced the file at wikidata. Lotje (talk) 14:38, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

Another map edit request

Hi Shyamal - on File:Egretta gularis map.svg, could you remove the green mapped in the Americas (species does not occur there), and the pink in Africa and the orange in south Asia (Egretta dimorpha and E. sacra are both now treated as separate species). Thanks! - MPF (talk) 23:12, 15 June 2023 (UTC)

@MPF: , I had a look and recollected the original context - see en.wiki - apparently there are records of gularis vagrants across the Americas - see cited sources and this was to show other similar-looking taxa on the map. Shyamal L. 03:16, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
Many thanks! Odd, I didn't get the ping notification so I have only seen your reply just now. I appreciate your looking into this, but I still think the map is confusing, as I (and I would suspect most others) would read it as showing E. gularis to be a widespread, regular, ± breeding species in the Americas, rather than a handful of vagrants. Could it be changed to a few dots, like it is for the Spanish and French occurrences? The dots don't need to show the exact locations of individual records if the details are not easily available, just something proportional to the number of records in each country concerned. Thanks again! - MPF (talk) 22:59, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
That's a good suggestion, would need me to examine the records more carefully and adding perhaps some x marks. Will try to do that. Shyamal L. 02:56, 22 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks! - MPF (talk) 17:54, 30 June 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Shyamal!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Larryasou (talk) 14:24, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

Since it was connected to Wikidata, it should only have been a bot task to add categories. In fact the future search system will likely make manual categories obsolete. Shyamal L. 15:09, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

Categories for files

Please do not put files on top level categories e.g. "Maps". You should place files in sub-categories of main category, especially when there is explicit instruction to do so on the category page as is the case with category "Maps". By following the rules, we can keep this place organized. Thank you. --Periegetes (talk) 14:14, 10 October 2024 (UTC)

2023 Picture of the Year: Incense plays an important role in Vietnamese life. It is considered as a sacred bridge to connect the visible life of human beings and the world of heaven, earth, and gods. Photo taken in Quang Phu Cau village, on the outskirts of Hanoi, Vietnam. In this picture, incense sticks are being set out to dry, after being dipped in the incense solution.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2024 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the nineteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Halebid Muktaphala series

Shyamal -- Thanks for uploading your excellent Halebid Muktaphala photos! I have used "Halebid Muktaphala 19.jpg" on my webpage "Maize in Pre-Columbian India", with a detail, and have added it to the gallery of the Wikipedia Hoysaleswara Temple page.

I have a few questions for you: First, who is the central diety in "Halebid Muktaphala 15.jpg"? Second, is there a technical term for a female attendant like that in #19? And third, what is your take on the question of whether these objects are really maize? Do others in India and esp. Karnataka agree with you?

I'll check back here for a reply in a week or so. Thanks again! HuMcCulloch (talk) 17:28, 14 April 2026 (UTC)

I forgot to ask whether these photos are all from the Hoysaleswara Temple in Halebid. I gather it's the biggest one, but that there are a couple of others there. HuMcCulloch (talk) 17:43, 14 April 2026 (UTC)
@HuMcCulloch: - I have a long note at my blog - I think the identification of the thing as maize is a load of garbage which is in all cases guided by those interested in promoting Hindu-superiority or by Mormonism-promoters. The specialist opinion from a person who has worked a lifetime on maize genetics and breeding is the one by J.K.S. Sachan. About the deity, I will check with iconography specialists. I think the attendants are generically called "yakshi"s but again there are roles based on the iconography and positioning. And yes, these are all from the Halebid temple cluster. I don't think there is similar representation in Belur. Shyamal L. 01:36, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
A specialist in iconography wrote that the central figure in File:Halebid Muktaphala 15.jpg represents Shiva and holds the Triśūla (broken), ḍamaru, Akśamála and Bījaphalaka (a term similar to muktaphala - see current view supposed to have associations with fertility, Karmic fruits etc). The generic term for the maidens in sculpture as in File:Halebid Muktaphala 19.jpg is "shila ba:lika" Shyamal L. 10:09, 15 April 2026 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply!
Although I am persuaded by Johannessen and Parker's claim that these are maize, I am, contrary to your generalization, neither a Mormon nor a Hindu. I have no reason to think Johannessen is, either.
Rather, as a Caltech grad, I am intrigued by the apparently circular reasoning here: We "know" that these objects can't be maize, because we "know" that there was no important contact before 1492, and we "know" that because there is no evidence to the contrary, apart from "misidentifications" and outright "frauds."
I heard Johannessen speak in 1992, and was overwhelmed by his excellent photos. Unfortunately, these didn't come through as well in the article, which is why your photos, and in particular "Halebid Muktaphala 19.jpg", which shows an ear with its husk only partly removed, are very important. I have linked it in my discussion of Payak and Sachan on "muktaphala" in my "Maize in Pre-Columbian India" webpage, at <https://www.asc.ohio-state.edu/mcculloch.2/arch/maize.html>.
What do you make of Shakti M Gupta's identification of maize plus 5 other New World plants in his or her book Plants in Indian Temple Art? I include my review of it on my webpage. BTW, do you know if Gupta is male or female? Shakti is the name of a goddess, so I long assumed this was a woman, but now I learn that it is also a common man's name.
Although most of your photos have apparent maize ears, husked or unhusked, #15 is definitely not maize. Rather, I believe it is the equally New World custard apple, which is one of the actual definitions of "muktaphala." Would you agree?
Bijaphalaka, according to wisdomlib.org, is a citron. The "phala" Shiva holds is about the right size, but has kernels arranged in maize-like parallel rows, unlike a citron.
Wisdomlib also says that in Kannada, "muktaphala," in addition to meaning "pearl," can be a term of abuse. Have you ever heard it used that way? Why would that be? HuMcCulloch (talk) 23:47, 20 April 2026 (UTC)
About the circular reasoning - if Indians had pre-Columbian contact, why would the iconography include only maize - - that too as a symbol of wealth - there is not a single farming community in India that considers maize as an important crop. There are so many other plants that could have been introduced. Anyway, one should start with parsimony - use the simplest explanations - there are tons of other iconographic details that are of a mythical nature. Indian temple carvings do not show naturalistic details of plants, the elephants and bulls tend to be among the few animals that are fairly well done - but not even fish (which Cambodian temple iconography excels in). The identification of Indian plants in archaeology has been filled with misinformation, and a fundamental source of the problem is the failure of the "university" in India. The British instituted separate organization for research while the early universities were only for training of a workforce. Cross disciplinary training (and collaboration) is missing in most scholarship. Basic botanical knowledge has been lacking among Indian scholars in archaeology and other fields for a long time now. The iconographic muktaphala is as mythical as a four-armed god. I would not use a Däniken-style intepretation of it. Shyamal L. 01:17, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
Have looked at Shakti Gupta's 1971 edition online and cannot see any mention of maize. Let me know the exact page numbers and I can have a look again. She was apparently the niece of the botanist Birbal Sahni, so she would have had access to botanical expertise. Shyamal L. 03:03, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
Gupta 1971 is her Plant Myths and Traditions of India. I was referring to her 1996 Plants in Indian Temple Art, p. 176. I cite all the good parts in my review, which is the second section of my "Maize in Pre-Columbian India" website, at <https://www.asc.ohio-state.edu/mcculloch.2/arch/maize.html>. The final section deals with Payak and Sachan and "muktaphala."
Today, maize is the #3 grain-like crop in India, after rice and wheat, and Karnataka is one of the top producers, so the climate is congenial. It was unknown in Karnataka as recently as 1960 due to the endemic Downy Sorghum Mildew, according to P&S, so I'm thinking that this mildew must have been a late-Hoysala-era introduction to the region, much like the potato blight in Ireland.
The Hoysala artists had great imaginations, but if they just imagined these objects, how is it that they were imagining maize? It's easier to think that they had actual maize ears as models, and that this was a very important crop at the time, at least until the Mildew appeared.
Gupta identifies 70 species in temple art, so the artists were often botanically precise. HuMcCulloch (talk) 21:16, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
Correction -- It's your #5 that looks like a custard apple, not #15. HuMcCulloch (talk) 21:54, 21 April 2026 (UTC)
Unfortunately I do not have access to the book and cannot examine it, but one must note that Indian science, research, and scholarship declined rapidly starting in the 1980s, particularly in northern India and Hindu nationalist ideas of this kind spread widely. It requires a certain botanical training to see that there are many alternatives when trying to identify plants. If one has a limited knowledge of plant diversity, it is easy to imagine a identification based on a carving of a generic pattern on a rock and latch on to it. One gets doubts when one sees more plants - taxonomists really go through a Denning-Kruger curve. In identifying carvings one must also examine how that identification fits into historical information as well as current socio-economic, and cultural views on that plant. And many patterns can and are used in art, India is pretty biodiverse for a temperate-zone person. Buddhist art traditions presumably on softer rocks have more details and one can indeed identify species like Saraca indica, Cocos nucifera and numerous other plants that continue to be well-known in Indian tradition and culture. The continuity matters in determinations. You will not see any traditional festival where maize is used in the ceremonies. There is no maize-based diet or dish in any Karnataka village unlike as in sorghum. Interestingly the Kannada name for sorghum is the root that is modified with an adjective to describe maize. Maize is mostly associated with urban street-food, fast-food cultures and is grown chiefly for industrial usage, not for home use. Plants in culture can typically be readily found in home and temple usage. Shyamal L. 01:46, 22 April 2026 (UTC)
