Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2024 voting is open!
Dear Wikimedian,
You are receiving this message because we noticed that you previously voted in the Picture of the Year contest. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2024) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
In this second and final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2024.
This is a deletion request for the community to discuss whether the nominated page should be kept or deleted. Please voice your opinion in the linked request above. Thank you very much!
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.
Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.

It has been my understanding that we should not use the "depicts" property to describe something belonging to a company, or in the case of an airplane, an airline, since it's just one airplane, not the entire company. We have the "owned by" and "operated by" properties to cover that. Am I mistaken? Acroterion (talk) 12:26, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
I wasn’t able to find anything that suggested ‘depicts’ statements shouldn’t be added to images of individual airplanes, and instead found more than 100 images for British Airways alone (IIRC) and even quite a few for the much smaller US-Bangla Airlines. There doesn’t seem to be a culture of adding ‘owner’ statements (see and ) However, I did find a number of images with ‘operator’ statements in case of BA () but most (or all?) of these statements have been added by you alone. I am not really in favour of using rarely added properties other people are unlikely to look for because that to me is an indication that the community does not see them as the right choice and could potentially limit the usefulness of the data we are adding. Thanks, and I have halted these edits for now, so please do point out if I am mistaken! Redmin (talk) 13:37, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
Honestly, I'm not sure what the community's intentions are. The schema for properties implies a lot that hasn't been developed or much used yet, while there are bots keeping very busy adding questionably useful precise bit counts and such. Thanks for your insight, I think the answer is that nobody really knows, or else nobody has done anything but add the top level material. It would be nice if there was better documentation. Acroterion (talk) 17:08, 1 May 2026 (UTC)
I see that. It's interesting, but it brings up the question of what the preferred format might be; is it an entry in each pigeonhole, or as components of the "depicts" field. I have no idea. Acroterion (talk) 01:46, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
চলছে বাংলার প্রেমে উইকি আলোকচিত্র প্রতিযোগিতা ২০২৬, এখনই অংশ নিন!
সুধী Redmin,
You have vandalized the content of Wikimedia Commons. Please refrain from making test edits. If you continue making inappropriate edits you may be blocked from editing Commons. You may test freely in the sandbox. Thank you.
Ridiculous. Seeing as you have reverted two of my edits from two different batches, it seems like you have gone through at least a few of my edits. If that assumption is right, it should have occurred to you that most my edits were in fact factual and the ones that were not were mistakes that I should have been informed about so I could fix them myself. And if it is not, it raises the question of why you showed up at my talk page to leave a warning that is meant for newcomers without actually checking other contributions I have made. Either way, this reflects poorly on a former admin and I hope you will remember to assume good faith from the next time.
Regarding the content of the edits themselves, this revert should not have been made; d:Q428858 is indeed depicted in the art work, just like d:Q170495 (the latter of which you left alone so my understanding is that your objection is to the addition of Q428858, not the use of P180 to document such information), I have reverted your revert. As for this revert, thank you for making that; it seems like some category about Aeroflot included that file (in a subcategory of that one). I will make sure not to recurse far when getting file lists to add SDC with my gadget in the future, and will be going through other edits related to Aeroflot to check if any other mistake was made.
Hope this helps. Thanks. Redmin (talk) 12:59, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
Have you read my reply here, @A.Savin? If you do so strongly believe that my actions are incorrect and I am vandalising, then please at least take a moment to explain why. Thanks. Redmin (talk) 17:38, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
Announcing the Winners of Picture of the Year 2025!
Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
