attribute elevation

In some cases (e.g. on steep mountains), it may be useful to add the elevation of the camera position (it was done e.g. here, but with a wrong vertical datum). Has this ever been considered? Is there reason to avoid it? The use of the correct vertical datum may be a challenge. --Kuhni74 (talk) 09:04, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

Yes, this should be implemented ASAP. Many JPEG photos have altutude in their metadata (EXIF field "Altitude"; also relevant: "Altitude Ref" and "Map Datum") and many file pages have it copied into this template in the same way as heading: E.g.:
{{Location|38.713563|-9.131112|altitude:70.94_source:Flickr}}
Altitude data transclusion should be implemented in this template in the same way as heading ASAP (seems to be straightforward). Then a bot could go through all JEPG files and populate the template with altitude data from each EXIF. -- Tuválkin 22:59, 16 January 2025 (UTC)
Agree. GioviPen GP msg 14:41, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
I agree, that's needed, especially as preparation to be also able to provide location information for images from orbit in space where in addition the angle above or below the local horizon is needed. The heading is already available as attribute. As elevation and altitude are not only used for the height in meters above sea level and at the same time for the elevation angle (aka altitude angle), which is the viewing angle above or below the horizon, it's important to not confuse both. But elevation for the height above sea level sounds like the more common word and is good. Isenberg (talk) 16:51, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
just to let you know the script made by @Rkieferbaum put also altitude :) GioviPen GP msg 18:58, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
I BEBOLDed adding the “alt” parameter into the template with the idea of eventually trying to incorporate it into the module. I’ll see if I can get something working in sandbox… it would be quite useful, I think. Rkieferbaum (talk) 22:24, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
And I see it also already has heading, nice! Just pitch angle missing for orbit images. Isenberg (talk) 23:26, 26 August 2025 (UTC)
heading imho one of the most important things lol GioviPen GP msg 07:35, 27 August 2025 (UTC)

Cool it with the DMS, get with the DD

I am saying on output don't show the godforsaken DMS anymore. It's not 1968.

Or OK, add a Preference, for people who can't live with the new default: Decimal Degrees!

Also, if DMS is syntax #2 on input, then why is it #1 on output??

heading

{{Edit request}} please allow both dot and coma (. and ,) for this attribute: it can be helpful to automatically add the information from the exif. GioviPen GP msg 14:44, 14 July 2025 (UTC)

GioviPen, are you asking to allow things like {{Location|34,02427|-116,15830}}? That one is hard to do. I tried in Template:Size but did not succeeded. It might be easier to write a bot that corrects it. --Jarekt (talk) 03:16, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
@Jarekt thanks for your answer. not for the coordinates but at least just for the attribute heading (because in the exif is stored with a coma "," but this template accept only the dot ".") GioviPen GP msg 07:38, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
GioviPen That I can do. See {{Location|34.02427|-116.15830|heading:123,45}} which gives {{Location|34.02427|-116.15830|heading:123,45}} --Jarekt (talk) 09:14, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
look at these edits:
i did that bcs the compass icon wasn't showing up. but now if i go to the older version is there aswell lol (so is already working with both dot and coma the heading)... sorry GioviPen GP msg 09:54, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
GioviPen, commas work because of this edit. --Jarekt (talk) 03:36, 24 July 2025 (UTC)
Oh ok amazing. So you actually changed something and that’s bcs of you, ty. Perfect, I was thinking that I was dumb or crazy hahaha GioviPen GP msg 01:17, 25 July 2025 (UTC)
Are there online maps that show the arrow? Jim.henderson (talk) 17:20, 26 July 2025 (UTC)

Viewing angle above/below horizon (aka elevation/altitude angle)

For referencing images in orbit around Earth and other planets, in addition to the available attributes latitude, longitude and heading, the following additional are needed:

elevation: the height above the zero reference (for example sea level). This is already suggested above in section "attribute elevation".

pitch: the viewing angle above or below the local horizon, aka elevation angle or altitude angle

With those attributes, it would be possible to automatically generate links to public location visualizers from space, like Google Earth, NASA World Wind or NASA Eyes of the Solar System. Examples:

Google Earth: https://earth.google.com/web/search/West+Baray,+Krong+Siem+Reap,+Cambodia/@12.35569408,101.13004445,-62.42289295a,946655.17021224d,35y,-124.68561349h,64.2083091t,0.00000008r/data=CpIBGmQSXgojMHgzMTEwMTE2MzNiOTA2NWNkOjB4ZjBiYTI0NjM0YjRhZTIZ_wZIjzrdKkAhZXCUvLryWUAqJVdlc3QgQmFyYXksIEtyb25nIFNpZW0gUmVhcCwgQ2FtYm9kaWEYAiABIiYKJAlb_7JszQAwQBHqAANnF6ISQBl8SAPKP1RaQCEI_wGOFhhXQEICCAE6AwoBMEICCABKDQj___________8BEAA

NASA Worldwind: https://worldwind.earth/explorer/?layers=Blue%20Marble&lat=12.6758072&lon=102.5706476&alt=448627.97&heading=-137&tilt=70&roll=0 title (pitch) angle is used when creating the sharing URL, but doesn't restore the view currently Isenberg (talk) 17:13, 24 August 2025 (UTC)

The current WorldWindEarth explorer bug preventing the restore of the viewing direction including pitch angle: https://github.com/WorldWindEarth/explorer/issues/38
When that is fixed, two publicly accessible systems exists to render photorealistic views of Earth from space from any geographic location, altitude, heading and pitch angle. Isenberg (talk) 18:31, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
We are discussing pitch angle in connection with pictures from orbit, but it seems clear that this also applies to views downward from aircraft, mountains, and structures, and upward towards them. Jim.henderson (talk) 00:43, 31 August 2025 (UTC)
