BMacZeroBot and publication date

Hello, in my opinion, the bot shouldn't be doing edits like this, which appears to be assuming the date in the {{Artwork}} template (or the corresponding inception (P571) property) as the publication date, where for fine art it is the creation date. The difference between the two is very important in US copyright law. For a stark example, consider the copyright status of Emily Dickinson's poetry in its original form.

It, of course, might be reasonable, depending on what provenance research turns up, to assume a particular piece was probably sold within a few years after creation, but that assumption should be made by a human being and not a bot IMO. Phillipedison1891 (talk) 22:18, 25 May 2026 (UTC)

@Phillipedison1891: Thanks for the feedback, that seems like a reasonable concern. Like you said, the publication date is probably quite close to the inception date in most cases, but there might be unusual cases. I can transition to using only the 'publication date' from Wikidata and not the 'inception' date. – BMacZero (🗩) 23:05, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
