As we step into a new year, we’re happy to invite you to take part in “Your Most Memorable Shot 2025.”
Since 2018, photographers from across the Wikimedia community have come together at the beginning of each year to share the photographs that meant the most to them over the past twelve months. Now in its eighth iteration, this tradition continues to be a space for reflection, storytelling, and celebrating meaningful moments through photography.
Whether you are a member of the Commons Photographers User Group or not, you are warmly welcome to participate and invite others too. Every image carries a story, and your perspective helps enrich this collective showcase.
Whenever you’re ready, please select your most cherished photograph from 2025 and share it on the designated page.
The deadline for submissions is 28 February 2026, so we hope you’ll join us before then.
We look forward to discovering the moments that made your year memorable and to continuing this wonderful tradition together.
It is a screenshot of Mexican television entertainer Paco Stanley in 1999 during his show Una Tras Otra shortly before his tragic death. This image is still under copyright from both TV Azteca, the network were the show aired, and from it’s original photographer Germán Romero/CUARTOSCURO. Meanwhile the upload here in Commons lacks any information of that, furthermore it’s seems and it’s very likely that this photo doesn’t qualify to be here in Commons and therefore to be needed nomination for delection. @Yagiv Looks like a copyvio to me, permissions look unclear. PascalHD (talk) 21:40, 12 January 2026 (UTC)

Comments Support Picture is good. You should add a Panorama template (since it obviously is one). --Plozessor 05:28, 2 March 2026 (UTC)

Hey Pascal! According to a recent deletion discussion. Publicity photos published between 63-78 that include the word Copyright (or any short variant) are valid even if the year has been omitted. I think this could impact some of the publicity pictures that have been tagged with the Defective tag (Such as this picture of The Gauntlet). I dunno if this issue should be brought up to the Copyright Village Pump for further discussion or just nominate the photos for deletion and edit the rules on the Publicity Photos page. Hyperba21 (talk) 06:20, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
@Hyperba21 Interesting, appreciate the notice. If I have uploaded any photos that would be considered to be under copyright based on this new info, feel free to nominate them for deletion. A further discussion at Village pump is not a bad idea, or at least link to a mass DR there. PascalHD (talk) 06:51, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
Hey! You mentioned a Cronkite image being PD and watermarked on the Village Pump. I bought the photo and uploaded it to Commons after I scanned it. SDudley (talk) 22:29, 23 March 2026 (UTC)
@SDudley Incredible! You know, I am often tempted to buy some of these photos. Would you be-able to scan the back also, just overwrite the file and then revert back to front? I try to include both sides of a photo. I'll add some details to the file summary. Thank you! PascalHD (talk) 00:25, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
Nevermind I see you uploaded it already, my bad! Also, the scan is great quality. Makes me want to do this sort of thing, shame the prints can get expensive on ebay. PascalHD (talk) 00:28, 24 March 2026 (UTC)
yeah I lowballed them for this one in particular haha. I wish I could get more but it would add up quite quickly. This one just seemed so special being from the 1970s and about a big historical CBS figure at the same time that the org is, let's say, undergoing big changes. Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2025 voting is open!
2024 Picture of the Year:Mundari man polishing the horns of one of his Watusi cows using a mixture of cow urine and ash as a ritualistic and protective practice in a temporary cattle camp in Terekeka, South Sudan.
Dear Wikimedian,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2025 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year is the twentieth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favourite images featured on Commons during the last year (2025) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just five images to become the Picture of the Year.
We also invite you to take part in the categorization of recently promoted quality images.
Comments IMO it's a bit too overexposed. --Syntaxys @Syntaxys I uploaded a revised version, what do you think? --PascalHD 21:46, 14 April 2026 (UTC) Support Good quality. --Plasmium 12:26, 16 April 2026 (UTC)

Comments A bit grainy, and a few spots in the sky. --Plozessor 03:04, 6 May 2026 (UTC) @Plozessor I think those spots were tiny bugs. I did a minor cleanup on the photo and uploaded new version, what do you think? --PascalHD 05:03, 6 May 2026 (UTC) Support Yes, good now! --Plozessor 03:32, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
Announcing the Winners of Picture of the Year 2025!
Hi everyone,
Wikimedia Commons is pleased to finally announce the winners of this year's Picture of the Year 2025 contest! We had some truly incredible finalists to choose from, but the community has spoken.
Here are your top three winning images:
First place: The aftermath of an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on October 9, 2023, leaving widespread destruction in the Rimal area. Attribution: WAFA (Q2915969) / CC-BY-SA 3.0
Second place: Baby cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) sleeping at Cape cross, Namibia. Attribution: Giles Laurent / CC-BY-SA 4.0
Third place: A gigantic jet photographed from the International Space Station by astronaut Nichole Ayers. Attribution: public domain
You can view the full results and see where all your favorite images placed here: Full 2025 Results
I also want to highlight what an incredible turnout we had. In the second round, we saw a massive jump in both the number of users voting and the total votes cast. We had exactly 13,979 votes cast by 3,509 users! To put that in perspective, last year we had 7,403 votes from 2,837 users. It is amazing to see that level of growth and community engagement.
Thank you to everyone who voted, helped organize, and generally made the contest such a huge success this year!
