Hey
As I said before, don't label photos of paintings as your own work, because they're not. The Upload Wizard does not force you to do that. Even if it did, you could then correct your uploads immediately afterward.
Uploading the paintings is good. Giving them bad metadata is bad, and makes more work for other people. DS (talk) 19:44, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
- Hi DS! As I said before, I am already working hours and hours on these files, I am not responsible for the system failures of Commons, providing poor uploading system. As long as the photograph is shot by me I will tag it as my "own work", especially where there are 3d parts like the frame of paintings... and I cannot make a separate upload for details, so they will be tagged too as my "own work". You are not forced to fix my files if you do not like this activity. There are other users who understand and appreciate the exceptional work I have been carrying on for more than 15 years, providing the largest amount of self-photographed artworks a user has ever freely uploaded probably in the entire planet. Maybe you just see those 200 files I upload every year on "Public domain days", but the rest of the year I shoot, name, edit and upload thousands of files, and I do not have a photography studio to share the work among, it is all on my shoulders. Only in 2025 I uploaded more than 28.000 self-made new files, all carefully descripted in the filenames, edited in Photoshop one by one, and categorized. So it is what it is.
- I know I could add more categories; I know I could translate each file description to English and paste it in the "description" field; I totally know I could add metadatas, copy files into galleries and "other versions", I could take time to request Quality status for most of my images or more, I could link them around the wikis, but I do what I can do. I am a volunteer and I do not upload 200 images a year, I do 100 times more, and it is A LOT. So I am sorry if some people sees this as "more work" for them, but the "own work" for paintings is just a minor issue, rarely pointed out.
- Instead of asking me to do extra work, you should ask the system developers and the bot runners to find a solution to do authomatically this fix which is so important for you. I hope you understand. Anyway, thanks for pointing your impressions, and have a nice day. --Sailko (talk) 20:37, 3 January 2026 (UTC)
Aiuto
Ciao.
Croberto68 (talk) 16:23, 5 January 2026 (UTC)

A ben vedere sì, in effetti, osservando il pavimento a mattonelle. Ci sono stato tre mesi fa, nel museo di Tarquinia, ma non ce n'era traccia... O le ho saltate o erano chiuse. Mah... Fabrizio Garrisi (talk) 18:31, 31 January 2026 (UTC)

Vasari Corridor
@Sailko, hi, I just edited File:Boboli, corridoio vasariano.JPG and instead of uploading it as version overwrote the original upload. It is just so much simpler, since it is used on several pages. I hope you agree, my edit makes sense and the picture looks better. Cheers, MenkinAlRire (talk) 05:36, 5 March 2026 (UTC)

Capital centuries
Dear Sailko, On one hand, thanks for correcting my capitalization of the C in Century. I am lax with capitals, as my own language (Dutch) has few, English has many, German even more and so forth. On the other hand, I doubted if the hyphen was correct. I took a look at some sources and found that probably it is not. Commons has a category with many examples. A site has (and I found similar elsewhere):
- Use a hyphen when the phrase acts as a compound adjective: Martin Luther King Jr. was a famous 20th-century activist.
- Do not use a hyphen when the phrase acts as a noun: The Ming Dynasty rose to power in the fourteenth century.
- Use a hyphen with the modifier mid (an abbreviation): mid-nineteenth century, mid-twentieth-century authors
- Use a hyphen with early or late only if they precede a noun: early-twentieth-century movements [but] artistic movements of the early twentieth century
I suggest we leave the changes as they are, there is better work to do. But I will try and stick a bit more to some rules.Dosseman (talk) 14:54, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Dosseman! Thanks for all the fixes you do in categories. As regards the categories by centuries, it is common to use the dash when is acts as a compoud adjective. For instance you have category:15th-century fashion, category:15th-century statues... and 6th-century steles! I use categories like this a lot, so I guess my edit was correct. Let me know if you have more doubts. Thank you. --Sailko (talk) 15:05, 7 April 2026 (UTC)
- I have studied on the subject of the compound adjective and think you are right. So I followed your example when creating some more categories. In Dutch we had some new spelling rules introduced a while back, and hyphens appeared where formerly they were left out. I am from the pre-hyphen era, and reluctant to use them. But who am I to ignore the English rules? Dosseman (talk) 08:27, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Dosseman thanks for the message. Grammar is an interesting topic, we had so many discussions about such minimal details in it.wiki, so I am very attentive now :) If I can give you another suggestion, when you write dates try to avoid expression like "first half of century", "second quarter" etc. Thou correct, they require mental calculation and it could not be familiar with a part of the readers, especially when they come from non-European countries. I noticed that some important museums like British Museum or Louvre Abu Dhabi are replacing the caption of items with simplier numbers that do not require math, like 1700-1600 BCE instead of XVII or 17th century BCE, 1590s instead of "end of XVI century", and so on. This is not a rule, it's just a suggestion to make it easier for the generic reader, especialli when it come to BC era. --Sailko (talk) 13:33, 9 April 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Sailko, Thanks for the advice, I will use it but sparingly, as I often got my names’ texts on my own site from sometimes tens of years ago. I may have to rewrite those to stick to those rules, and in some cases that is not worth my effort. There even sometimes are fresh notices with other dates, what is the right one (and sometimes notices are mixed). In other cases, they are different from what other people wrote, in attribution and date. In important cases I may spend time searching the web for a time that I’d rather spend publishing more pictures or just locating them on my hard disks. Dosseman (talk) 17:58, 9 April 2026 (UTC)

Roman Imperial vs. Roman imperial
My thinking on this was:
- Roman Republican coins = coins of the Roman Republic (sadly, the category Roman Republican denari [sic] is spelled wrong, so that would be a worthy correction, as the plural of the Latin word denarius is denarii, two i's because the first i is part of the stem, and the second is the plural inflection)
- Roman Imperial coins = coins of the Roman Empire
- United States dollars = dollars of the United States (it doesn't become United states dollars in the attributive position)
- West Virginian commemorative medals = commemorative medals of West Virginia, even though Virginian is an adjectival form
That is, an attribute adjective in English conforms to the capitalization of the proper noun even if that proper noun is an open compound, and "Roman Empire" is a proper noun in the periodization of Roman history as distinguished from "Roman Republic" or "the Principate" or "the Tetrarchy".
As a side note, in my opinion the term "Greek imperial" has been misapplied to coins issued under the authority of Roman emperors in Greek-speaking provinces, though I haven't been deleting it. "Greek imperial" would designate coins issued by a Greek imperial authority such as Alexander, or one might call the coins first issued in Magna Graecia by Greek colonists "Greek colonial coins". "Roman Imperial" differs from "Greek imperial", however, in that we don't usually refer to Alexander's empire as the Greek Empire (a dab link). Coinage issued in the provinces under Roman authority is usually called provincial, as in "Greek provincial coins of the Roman Empire". As further comparison, "Gallic imperial coins" would be misleading for coins issued under Roman authority in the Gallic provinces, because there is a breakaway Gallic Empire in the third century that issued coinage, which would be Gallic Imperial coins = coins of the Gallic Empire.
This is no big deal, I suppose. But a little surprising, since there is no functional syntactical difference between Roman Republican (routinely used in the names of coin categories) and Roman Imperial. Cynwolfe (talk) 14:21, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
- Hi Cynwolfe, I just based on Category:Greek imperial coins, that I used before. I guess imperial is just and adjective so needs lower case, as well as republican :) But I will not edit again if you reverse: your choice. --Sailko (talk) 14:31, 11 April 2026 (UTC)
