Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Hello, Magioladitis!

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hi, looking at File:Why Wikipedia does not have women's point of view.jpg, I see that in the bottom left corner it is licensed CC BY-NC-SA; however, you have used a CC BY license - I should point out that your omission of the SA is a breach of the licensing terms. Also, since it's got NC, it's not eligible for upload to Commons - see Commons:Creative Commons copyright tags. --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 16:42, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Redrose64 what is the correct way to upload the image, if any? I created the poster but the image in the background the logo of the feminist group. They allow upload but they do not wish any alteration of their logo to be used. -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:55, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Redrose64 I used the wizard to add the CC licence on commons. Please feel free to fix this to CC-NC-SA or Wikipedia does not support this? -- Magioladitis (talk) 16:56, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

The thing is, the NC licenses are not acceptable either on Commons or Wikipedia; that's why we don't have license templates like Template:cc-by-nc-4.0, Template:cc-by-nc-sa-4.0, w:en:Template:cc-by-nc-4.0, or w:en:Template:cc-by-nc-sa-4.0. You could upload it to Wikipedia as non-free content, but you would need a good fair-use rationale. --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 17:06, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Redrose64 I could ask and replace the image to add a different CC license at the bottom but then that would mean someone could take the Telesilla logo and alter it for commercial use? This is what I am trying to avoid here. If the answer is yes, then we can just delete the image. -- Magioladitis (talk) 17:10, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

That's the problem... I would say that since it's likely that Τελεσιλλα would not want their design to be commercially exploited, it's probably best to request deletion, which will keep them happy. Since COM:GCSD#G7 can apply here, you can use {{SDG7}} for this. --Redrose64 (talk; at English Wikipedia) 17:34, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

Problem concerning Greek Wikipedia

Hello, I would like to ask you what shall I do in Greek Wikipedia. I was today blocked indefinitely for no reason by user Kalogeropoulos. Reason which this user indicated is use of multiple accounts, while I have not used any other account on that language Wikipedia nor misused such. My account is 10 years old, I was discussing also with some other users. What I did is that I just suggested concerns about deletion of some articles by some other user in the discussion. My edit was ment just to evaluate his actions by other users there and say, if his actions were appropriate or not. My concern was immediately deleted. @Magioladitis: – Hello, what is this? I have written to few administrators on Greece Wikipedia and nobody replied. Greek Wikipedia blocked even my talk-page, there is a custom that on English Wikipedia blocked people are never blocked on their talk-page, to be able adress their block. Blocking own user talk page right away is against the rules on English Wikipedia. I state again, I have not used any other account on Greek Wikipedia.
