Hello, 6D!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Not categorising images

Hi, you said at ANU in December that you would categories many images that I uploaded as possible and in March that you were really sorry for forgetting to categorise the land vehicle images, next time I will categorise the images before updoading.

Given the notices above on your recent uploads, are you batch uploading images again without categorising them? Belbury (talk) 17:55, 13 July 2026 (UTC)

No, but when i upload aircraft that registration number category not created, I just leave blank until the category are created. 6D (talk) 00:18, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
File:BAoverUnited byWTLsfoDec2014 (16182154390).jpg above was a duplicate of File:BAoverUnited 122214.jpg which was uploaded in 2014 and had already been categorised, including a registration number.
You can create categories yourself when they are missing, or you can use broader categories. Files should not be left completely uncategorised. Belbury (talk) 08:44, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
For duplicate one, Flickr2commons only detect same file name on when moving albums, unless moving single image and all images taken by that photographer which detect same file at hash level. And for missing categories one, I would create category for single images and use broader categories for albums. 6D (talk) 09:25, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
I'm saying that your BAoverUnited upload could have been categorised, including by registration number, because the older duplicate image had already been categorised. Belbury (talk) 09:31, 14 July 2026 (UTC)
That's clearly not the case for say, your recent upload File:CS-TTH (52136652239).jpg which is not categorized in Category:CS-TTH (aircraft) despite that category having existed since 2013. Or File:F-HZUT (53727642321).jpg, which is again not in its registration category despite that category existing. Or File:Boeing 747-89L ‘B-2485’ Air China (49067161272).jpg which you uploaded 5 days ago and still haven't put into the registration category.
You've been brought to the administrator's noticeboard multiple times for failing to categorize (, , ) where you repeatedly do promise to categorize, but yet still aren't categorizing, even for stuff you know you should be doing such as aircraft registration categories, which specifically been brought up multiple times.
If you don't know what something is, don't bulk upload images of it. If you aren't going to bother to categorize, don't upload 300 images in one day and create a ton of work for other users. Other users who have done similar things (such as SecretName101) get uploaded banned until they have categorized their past uploads, and I really don't see why this shouldn't be the case here given the persistent and repeated failure to do basic categorization work despite multiple requests and promises made. 4300streetcar (talk) 14:09, 20 July 2026 (UTC)
Ok, but I least categorising bulk aircraft images by airport or aircraft types. 6D (talk) 01:31, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
And I think image having any categories except photograph taken by photographer category are ok. 6D (talk) 01:35, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
I've had enough of your false promises and badly curated uploads. I am blocking you from uploading until you demonstrate the ability to properly name, describe, and categorize images - by doing so with the files you have already uploaded. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 02:02, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
How many files should categorise need to unblock me? 6D (talk) 02:06, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
That depends on how well you demonstrate that you understand how to curate files, and how well you build trust that you will continue curating files after an unblock. But certainly a substantial fraction of the files that you have uploaded. You have made quite a mess, and now it's time to clean it up. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 02:10, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
Ok, but exact number of file need to category? 6D (talk) 02:12, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
The only exact number I can promise is "every single file you've uploaded". If your aim is to be a productive member of the Commons community, forget about uploading for a file and work to curate the huge number of files you have uploaded, and you will likely get your upload privileges back eventually. If all you care about is uploading, then you're not here to improve Commons. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 02:17, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
OK 6D (talk) 02:22, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
What about uploading own works with proper filename, categories and description? 6D (talk) 02:31, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
To be clear: that only comes into sight when you are ready cleaning up your earlier uploads. It doesn't help that you have been vandalising like this. --Lymantria (talk) 08:00, 21 July 2026 (UTC)
