False positive

Hello, first of all, thanks for your work. However there were a tricky edit on fr:Giovanni Boldini. One picture should be replaced, and your bot did it, but a second picture with a partial identical name were edited also, creating a red link. Maybe in your regex, add ":" and "^" as condition for prefix ? Sisyph (talk) 09:49, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

Option to opt-out?

@Grin: Is there anything that can be added to an enwiki page to tell the bot not to remove broken images from it? (The page en:Wikipedia:WikiProject AI Cleanup/AI images in non-AI contexts is a historical list of AI-generated images which have been placed into articles, and what happened to them, but the bot dutifully blanks entries from it whenever an image gets deleted from Commons. A broken image link would be preferable.) Belbury (talk) 09:24, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

@Belbury Nothing that can be added to the page, but I just added an exception in the code, so it should be all set now. —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 19:52, 9 January 2025 (UTC)

Can you added the renamed file in its it.wikipedia.org? Thank you.  Preceding unsigned comment was added by 193.207.140.40 (talk) 15:44, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

Not sure what this means. —Mdaniels5757 (talk  contribs) 16:57, 8 January 2025 (UTC)

XVALA image

Hello! I'm wondering if you could tell me more about what happened here. The edit summary got truncated so I'm not clear about why the image was removed, and that makes it hard to fix the problem. Thanks! EdiOnjales (talk) 22:07, 28 January 2025 (UTC)

If you see the image File:Street_view_of_The_Brangelina_House's_stenciled_hearts_during_the_frame_stage_of_the_new_home_construction.jpg you will see the complete message there: Krd deleted page File:Street view of The Brangelina House's stenciled hearts during the frame stage of the new home construction.jpg (No permission since 15 January 2025) grin 14:40, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

Delete duplicate without replacing filename

The following topic at the Village Pump is about exceptions for this bot: Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2025/02#Delete_duplicate_without_replacing_filename
@Magnus Manske: Is there a way to exclude a renamed file from delinking? --Watchduck (quack) 09:38, 23 February 2025 (UTC)

The bot does not pick files to delete: admins submit every request to the bot. If the admin does not submit something then the bot will not delete that something. If you mean there's a problem with some submission script then you should notify its author. grin 14:43, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

Tiny bug in Edit summary

In de:Special:Diff/253764027 it seems the summary reached the maximum length of 256 byte. I do not know if this is a limit of the database or your software, the database scheme says "comment_text BLOB"? However, maybe you shorten the name of the file from [[c:File:Bowen_Yang_Wicked_Special_Screening_in_NY.jpg|Bowen_Yang_Wicked_Special_Screening_in_NY.jpg]] to a simpler [[c:File:Bowen_Yang_Wicked_Special_Screening_in_NY.jpg]]? --Wurgl (talk) 21:09, 28 February 2025 (UTC)

It is probably a sanity limit in the code. grin 14:44, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

[fr:wp] @Grin: Hello, I think it would be a good idea to delete the legend associated with the the image the bot is delinking. Otherwise, the article is added in a maintenance category. Thanks. — VVLLAACC 09:42, 1 March 2025 (UTC)

This very probably (and unfortunately) will not happen (until I get around rewriting the code). The bot already uses some major hacking surgery to try not to break wikitext, various templates, galleries, whatnot, and very added complexity usually result a lot of unhappy people seeing the damages after various corner cases. grin 14:48, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

A way to tag pages that where CommonsDelinker should not work?

@Grin, first of all, thank you for this bot! :)

We have a conversation at French Wikipedia where it appears that some archived community pages should keep the red links even when the file is deleted, as the illustration was important to the context.

Would it be possible to have a special tag to add to a page were your bot would not do its job? Or a configuration page where we could list pages (ideally root pages, with conditions, like WP:Bistro*)?

Thanks, Trizek from FR 19:19, 3 March 2025 (UTC)

This has been a request in the past and I thought I have implemented some ingoring rules, but it appear I only desired it... I try to get around it (ignoring nobots pages), no promises. grin 14:52, 21 March 2025 (UTC)
Hmmm, it seems that I was wrong, the bot seems to ignore {{nobots}} and {{bots | deny=…CommonsDelinker ... or deny=all} marked pages already. It has not been extensively tested but looks working at a glance. Ping back if it doesn't. grin 15:00, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

Wrong substitution

Here the bot replace an existent image with a non-existent one. What happened?--Paracel63 (talk) 13:42, 31 March 2025 (UTC)

More disruptive behaviour here. Paracel63 (talk) 13:44, 31 March 2025 (UTC)
Probably someone have deleted an image, asked the bot to replace it with another one, then someone else changed the another one somehow.
You see the references in the edit summary, go to that page and see there what happened. The bot does not initiate anything, neither delete nor rename. -- grin 15:03, 15 July 2025 (UTC)

Slavic map

@Grin: Hello. Why did this bot change all photos of File:Slavic europe.svg with File:Slavic europe (Kosovo unshaded).svg instead of File:Slavic europe (Kosovo shaded).svg? The stable version of File:Slavic europe.svg showed Kosovo* as part of Serbia (per the UN), but now it shows everywhere without it. 77.243.27.9 19:30, 15 April 2025 (UTC)

The bot does what admins ask from it. Usually the edit summary references the request. -- grin 15:04, 15 July 2025 (UTC)

Opt-out for Delinker?

Hello. Is there any way to bypass Delinker? I love moving files, but I hate it when Delinker steals my edits. I also like to do the file name swapping in the language versions by myself if the script crashes or there are too many pages. Maybe this sounds greedy, but I'm happy to increase my global edit count myself. To be honest, I don't need Delinker unless there is a page that is blocked for me, but then I can always create the Delinker command later. Greetings, זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 23:08, 2 June 2025 (UTC)

Let me quote from above: the bot seems to ignore Category:Pages with template:bots and {{bots | deny=…CommonsDelinker ... or deny=all} marked pages already. It has not been extensively tested but looks working at a glance. -- grin 15:05, 15 July 2025 (UTC)

bot should move categories, that resulted in chaos in those categories

@Grin: The bot didn’t move many categories, but only their content (the files) which results in Chaos in German "Landschaftsschutzgebieten". It wrote after 3 minutes on the request page "Removing completed category move commands" and took the requests away, see requests, scroll below. But it didn’t move any of those many categories which are now all empty and the files are in red non-existent categories (only 4 target categories existed before and are not red). I have seen this issue only once and I’m wondering, what has happened here and if the bot can tidy up the chaos itself and move the categories after the files or what problem it had with those requests. —176.1.8.148 13:43, 22 June 2025 (UTC)

It may be a bit confusing but CommonsDelinker and SieBot (which moves categories) are two different code. The former does not touch categories, as far as I remember, and I never have been involved in the latter. I am not even sure who maintains SieBot now. -- grin 15:11, 15 July 2025 (UTC)

File:Internationale-rus.ogg

Restore the Russian version of "The Internationale" on all Wikipedia language editions. Essentially, the old and deleted Russian version of the song's article should be replaced with the new version. Is it possible to do this? Futbollo (talk) 17:47, 2 September 2025 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker batch fails on /sandbox item

I am using the JustReplace+ user script which calls CommonsDelinker. On File:ThomasHoward4HerzogvonNorfolk.jpg, the script ran perfectly until it hit a Japanese sandbox item and then it threw an error (which disappeared before I could read it), and won't pickup again. Is there a way to make the code skip past problem replacements and continue with the rest of the files? - PKM (talk) 20:51, 3 December 2025 (UTC)

Corrupted enwiki edit summaries.

Search the bot's enwiki edit history for [[ to find multiple broken links in edit summaries because the closing ]] is missing in each case. -- ~2025-40388-95 (talk) 22:04, 12 December 2025 (UTC)

File:Portrait de Camille Desmoulins en famille.jpg

Can you replace the deleted redirect from all of wikipedia pages? Thank you. --Yasuteru 16:28, 29 December 2025 (UTC)

@Yasuteru: Is it just simple. Stop requesting the deletion of redirects; they aren't created for no reason. What happens if such an old file is used somewhere on a website that delinkers or file movers can't control? The file will become unusable and will subsequently no longer appear on the website. זיו「Ziv」For love letters and other notes 19:52, 29 December 2025 (UTC)

Redirects

Can you replace these two redirects with the actual titles in all of their wiki pages: "G. Dal Piaz.jpg" and "Giambattista Dal Piaz (1904-1995).jpg"? Thank you. --Dimantra 19:04, 7 January 2026 (UTC)

Long pause

@Grin: since December 29th, CommonsDelinker doesn't replace or remove files. Is this long pause normal? --HVL talk 18:53, 13 January 2026 (UTC)

It seems like it was a issue with CommonsDelinker, but it looks like its fixed now. It has done almost 2500 edits from January 16 to now. // Kakan spelar (talk) 13:38, 17 January 2026 (UTC)
Indeed. It is a permanent problem that some wikimedia projects fail the login for the bot, seemingly randomly, and the bot tries to evade these with more or less success. When it's the latter it may get stuck trying, while wikimedia keeps delaying logins, and it spirales out of control. I have fixed it when got the notice, thanks for all who pinged me. -- grin 17:36, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
Hi @Grin: , it seems like COM:CDC is stuck again. Thanks for checking, in advance.  regards, Revi 12:30, 7 February 2026 (UTC)

Failure to remove part of flagicon

The infobox for Wikipedia:Western India uses the Flag of Gujarat.svg, but this was deleted. When CommonsDelinker attempted to remove the usage of the file on this page, it broke the entire infobox because it left part of the image embed (here). Can anything be done about this behavior? Camshaft54 (talk) 03:31, 3 March 2026 (UTC)

Why do you have the image in a separate line? I'm not sure that this is a common pattern to use, is there a reason doing that? -- grin 22:43, 4 March 2026 (UTC)

Bot deletes too much

Hello, it seems that CommonsDelinker has been a bit overzealous, at least in this case (I haven't searched for others). Not only did it remove the file that had been deleted from Commons, but it also removed the next image (c:File:CCAA tab peut 03.jpg) as well for no detectable reason. This was probably because there was no line break between the two images in the source code? It would be great if you could have a look at this. (I hope that this is the right place to report this potential bug.) Thanks and best regards, DerMaxdorfer (talk) 20:15, 17 April 2026 (UTC)
