A few questions of mine about finding copyright information
Hello, I saw the messages you left on my talk page (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Randomuser335S) regarding two photographs relating to John Gacy Wayne that I've uploaded. Both of those photographs were borrowed from newspaper archived websites, which I added in the descriptions. With one of those photographs, the photographer had died in 2022 according to his colleague memorializing him in his blog.
The other photograph was borrowed from a 1980 Pittsburg Press article, which gave no names of authors or photographers. One issue with the Pittsburg Press is that it closed down in the 90s. If the wikipedia page is to believed, its remaining assets were purchased and absorbed by the Pittsburg Post-Gazette in 2011. Another version of the "Piest relatives at Gacy trial" photograph was used by a 1980 Noblesville Ledger article published on the same day. Like the Pittsburg Press article, the Noblesville Ledger article gave no names of authors or photographers beyond crediting the UPI photo agency. I'm not certain if the photograph is under the Pittsburg Press, Noblesville Ledger, or the UPI copyright, and the name of its photographer is completely lost to me.
Although my rough assumptions are that the copyright holders are the Chicago Tribune and UPI photos respectively, what should I do if I cannot find the copyright information or the holders are simply too inaccessible for me to reach? Randomuser335S (talk) 18:48, 21 September 2025 (UTC)
Category:Point Street Bridge (1972)
Hi! Thanks for creating the subject category, but I believe you meant to create Point Street Bridge (1927)! Let me know if you want me to rename it and recategorize the items.
Also, do you think it's worthwhile to rename File:Point Street Bridge (1872), Providence, RI.jpg to 1907? At the time of the upload, it would have been the only item in a 1907-year category for the bridge. Therefore, I put it in the 1872-year category, as those two bridges were very similar. - Yikes, thanks for catching that year typo! I handled the cat-move and associated cat tags.
- I do support fixing the year in that other filename. Rhode Island College's information about this item says it's from 1911. DMacks (talk) 05:42, 6 March 2026 (UTC)
You may be an eligible candidate for the U4C election
Greetings,
The Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) seeks candidates for the 2026 election. The U4C is the global committee responsible for overseeing enforcement of the Universal Code of Conduct. Elections are held annually, if elected a committee member serves for two years.
This year the U4C requires candidates to hold administrator rights on at least one wiki, which is why you are being contacted as you appear to hold this right. There are other requirements, such as candidates must be at least 18 years old and may not be employed by the Wikimedia Foundation or other related chapters and affiliates. You can find more information in the call for candidates on Meta-wiki. Additionally, the committee's working language is English; some ability to communicate in English is required.
The election opens on 18 May, if you are eligible and interested you have until 10 May to submit your candidacy. There will week between for candidates to answer questions from the community. Voting takes place privately in SecurePoll, successful candidates must receive at least 60% support. More information is available on the 2026 Elections page, including timelines and other candidacy information. If you read over the material and consider yourself qualified, please consider submitting your name to run for the committee. If you think someone else in your community might be interested and qualified, please encourage them to run.

Hi Dmacks, please check if GODL license applies to this image, File:The official portrait of C Joseph Vijay, the Chief Minister of Tamilnadu.jpg. Ganeshk (talk) 07:59, 16 May 2026 (UTC)
- Both source-links time out for me. DMacks (talk) 08:25, 16 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Shaan Sengupta: were you able to verify that the image is indeed at the cited source and properly identified as nationalized there? DMacks (talk) 05:12, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Ganeshk {{GODL-India}} doesn't apply here because this is a work of the Govt of Tamil Nadu, not the Govt of India. @DMacks, this image is present at the cited source but is not nationalized because that thing is limited to books only, not images. I now think I should've just nominated that image back then rather replacing GODL-India with PD-TamilGov. Thank you. Shaan SenguptaTalk 07:25, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
- @Shaan Sengupta: , PD-TamilGov does not apply to this image. It was not extracted from a book that has been released into public domain. The image needs to be speedy deleted. Ganeshk (talk) 07:57, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
- Yes that's what I said above. I tried nominating it for SD thrice, but there was a jammer/blocker active in my area which caused a lot of issues with my internet. Luckily I was able to do it this time. This has been going on for 3-4 days now because of exams nearby. Shaan SenguptaTalk 08:56, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks @Shaan Sengupta: . This won't be end of it. I nominated another version a few days back. Vijay fans will keep coming back. Ganeshk (talk) 09:45, 17 May 2026 (UTC)
