frame

Hello, Many pictures I want to copy has a permanent frame, I want to remove it but the border function is not operating. How to remove the frame (For example it is the case of chemical formula? Randdu (talk) 06:23, 26 April 2026 (UTC)

@Randdu: Hi, and welcome. I find COM:CT easy to use, if I drag the edges properly. You may request COM:AP at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to overwrite.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:12, 26 April 2026 (UTC)
{{ping|Jeff G.}] I'm missing the connection between this and copyright tags. Did you mean Commons:CropTool, which is what I would have suggested? (Took me a few seconds and then I realized the initials are the same, so I'm guessing that is what you meant.) Pinging @Randdu - Jmabel ! talk 17:41, 26 April 2026 (UTC)

Thank you;
Effectively after registration on wikicommons, some tools appears in the right of the picture and in particular crop but when I activate it, the proposal is only to cut the edges but the frame is still there?
My example is to copy a molecule (heme) on a document, the molecule appear with a frame and I wish to cancel the rectangular frame appearing around the molecule. Sorry I am not familiar with the wiki tools! Jacques Randdu (talk) 15:57, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

@Randdu: Unless I'm very much confused, the frame is not part of the file on Commons; it is an artifact of how the file is displayed on fr-wiki. You'd have to take up the case there. However, I think it is simply the standard code for how "thumb" works in the wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 19:16, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
finally to copy with iPad is OK, no frame. Thank you for your help. Jacques Randdu (talk) 17:23, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

How to find types of images?

Hi everyone I am looking for upskirt tennis photos. Is there a way I can efficiently search for that here? Thanks Beadmissy (talk) 04:04, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

@Beadmissy: Hi, and welcome. You may find some tame ones in or under Category:Upskirt in tennis or Category:Female tennis players. You may find links to racier ones in COM:DRs related to dignity, as photos themselves may have been deleted because they offended the dignity of the players.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 05:42, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

Compare two old versions

The latest version has its blob blobbed. If I blob an older version, I get a comparison of those two versions. As it should be. But I CANNOT un-blob the latest version so that I can select an even older version, to compare two OLD versions !

HELP ! PobClay (talk) 18:05, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

@PobClay: If you would indicate what file you are talking about and what two versions you want to compare, there is a much better chance someone can help you. I have no idea what you mean by having "its blob blobbed". Also, are you talking about versions of wikitext, or of an image? - Jmabel ! talk 20:35, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
Thank you for your response.
If you go to
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dorothea_Gravina&action=history
You will see that the first two entries below the box marked "Compare selected revisions" are both blobbed, but the lower ones are not.
You can click on any of the lower ones, and the blob will move from the second entry to yours - but the blob on the first entry - the latest amendment - CANNOT be removed. Well, *I* can't remove it!
.
I was curious to see what amendments "Babybrew6" and others had made between the entry that I had left on 13 November 2024 and 20 December 2024. PobClay (talk) 23:21, 27 April 2026 (UTC)
I now see what you mean by "blobbed". The following works for me:
  • Click the lefthand bubble next to 14:25, November 13, 2024 RobinClay.
  • That should let you click any more recent version in the second column of bubbles.
  • Click the bubble in that second column next to 11:51, December 20, 2024 Babybrew6 (the last revision you want to see).
  • Then go to the top of the page and click "Compare selected revisions".
  • That should take you to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dorothea_Gravina&diff=1264149600&oldid=1257233074, and if for some weird reason it won't, the link I just indicated here will.
BTW, in the future, please ask en-wiki questions on en-wiki. - Jmabel ! talk 23:38, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

File display issues

In a short while I've been able to stumble upon several Commons images on Wikipedia, whose thumbnails work, but their full-sized version will not display. Are there any reports of this yet? Michael21107 (talk) 19:57, 27 April 2026 (UTC)

Good morning, my name is Oran, I am the Graphic Designer at Ulster Rugby. Our logo is wrong on your site and I'm trying to change it. Can you assist? Orankane (talk) 08:52, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

@Orankane: Hi, and welcome. The logo used on English Wikipedia article en:Ulster Rugby is en:File:Ulster Rugby logo.svg, the file description page of which cited fair use and https://www.pro14rugby.org/media-guide-2017-2018/pro14_mediaguide_17_hr_v4/ 04:25, 14 November 2023 (UTC) after it was reduced from the original upload of 512 × 657 (6 KB) 20:21, 5 October 2017 (UTC) to 163 × 209 (6 KB) to comply with en:WP:NFCC. You are welcome to upload a newly named file with a name like en:File:Ulster Rugby logo 2026.svg (with the 2026 subject to change based on when you finalize the design) with a similar default size of <0.1 megapixel and similar citation. You are also welcome to issue a free license compliant with COM:L and upload a similarly named file here instead so it can be shared with many more people. Please understand that we keep old logos for historical purposes, and any upload here would have to be named differently from what English Wikipedia uses to avoid a name conflict.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 09:49, 28 April 2026 (UTC)
@Orankane: you also might want to at least skim COM:THIRD. It's not exactly your situation (since you are the rights-holder), but it's similar, and may be good at fleshing out the choices of how to handle things like this. Everything Jeff said is accurate, but the COM:THIRD provides more detail. - Jmabel ! talk 19:36, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

Photos you took yourself at concert

I noticed that a wiki article on a band I like doesn't have a photo. Can I Upload a photo I took myself at their concert of them (which includes their band logo behind them), or is the subject of the photo itself copyrighted? The venue itself didn't disclose anything about no photography. Thanks for the quick reply - it was directly in person. Their venues are fairly small so it's pretty easy to get a picture from only a few rows back. Mainly I'm worried about their band logo being in it - as this in itself is likely copyrighted. Stormh99 (talk) 18:07, 28 April 2026 (UTC)

As part of my assignment I need to include a photo of a graph of information. The graph I generated myself but it was from information found on the UNESCO website. Help with Wikimedia VRTS release generator step 3

I'ved uploaded two photos through the Upload Wizard to Wikimedia Commons twice, and the system keeps telling me those photos have not been uploaded. Why?  Preceding unsigned comment added by Dougmcilhagga (talk  contribs) 20:07, 29 April 2026 (UTC)

@Dougmcilhagga:
  • Special:ListFiles/Dougmcilhagga does not show your account as having any uploads.
  • The abuse filter log (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:ListFiles/Dougmcilhagga&ilshowall=1) does not show you as having had any uploads prevented.
  • There are several ways to access the Upload Wizard and they do not all behave identically. Did you use Special:UploadWizard or something else? If it was anything else (cross-wiki upload; something connected to a contest; etc.) please try Special:UploadWizard instead. (If you clicked the link from the VRTS release generator, that is indeed where it would have taken you.)
  • Not certain what you mean by "the system keeps telling me", could you be more specific? What is the URL of the page, and what exactly is it saying? Is it in the text of the page, a popup, or what? etc. The more specific, the better chance someone has of helping you.

Hi, thanks for trying to help. I'm going through this for the first time and struggling mightily. I'm trying to upload two photos, a standard mug shot and another general photo courtesy of U. of Stanford Athletics passed along to me by family members. When I go through the upload process and end up in the VRTS steps, I list the photos and a pop-up comes up that reads: No file named Leland01_mug.jpg //

has been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
I'm stymied. Appreciate any further direction that you can provide. Dougmcilhagga (talk) 17:45, 30 April 2026 (UTC)

How to specify timezone in the pictures I uploaded?

This picture I uploaded displays the time of the picture as 16:08:43. Which timezone is that time in? Is it UTC? The picture was taken at that time (16:08:43), but the timezone was Japan Time. How can I specify that? (Ravi Dwivedi (talk) 18:57, 30 April 2026 (UTC))

@Libreravi: the {{Information}} field "date" allows you to put in arbitrary data. The maybe easiest thing to do is to add such time zone information manually by editing the file page (ideally with a wikilink to the actual zone like "Japan Standard Time"). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 00:26, 2 May 2026 (UTC)
@Grand-Duc Thank you! Can you give an example of how to add such an info in the "date" field? Ravi Dwivedi (talk) 14:51, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
@Libreravi: that's simple. Hit "edit" to edit the page (or the "Information) section) and add the data like this: Special:Diff/1208253416/1208346829. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 15:01, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
@Grand-Duc Thank you! That was helpful. Ravi Dwivedi (talk) 15:14, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
@Grand-Duc Do I need to edit all the images I would like to add timezone to one by one? Or is it possible to mass edit photos? Ravi Dwivedi (talk) 15:21, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
There could be a way to do this with COM:Visual File Change, but that would likely involve regular expressions, a subject out of my league. It's certainly safe to do this one by one, as it avoids messing up images that may originate from different time zones (including switches between standard and summer / daylight saving times). Photo of archway

Is a photo of the beach entryway that I took considered my own work and safe to upload to wikipedia? Elisa22rangel (talk) 00:13, 1 May 2026 (UTC)

Hi Elisa22rangel. Assuming the arch you're asking about is the one mentioned in the English Wikipedia article en:North Beach, Corpus Christi, Texas, then whether such a photo could be uploaded to Commons kind of depends on several things. If you take a photo of the arch with your camera, then you would be considered the copyright owner/holder of that photo, and it would be considered your COM:Own work. If the arch is of a fairly utilitarian construction (i.e., just a plain arch with the name of the beach perhaps written on it), you should be OK uploading your photo per COM:FOP US#Originality requirement for architecture since a simple architectural structure is probably not going to be eligible for separate copyright protection under US copyright law. On the other hand, if the arch is something that is fairly ornate or decorative, or contains any type of creative or decorative signage (COM:CB#Noticeboards and signs), then those factors could mean the arch (or signage) would be considered a "creative work" eligible for separate copyright protection on their own; thus, making your photo a derivative work of someone else's creative work. In such a case, you might need to obtain the COM:CONSENT of the creator of this other "work" for it to be OK to upload your photo to Commons. Lastly, "own work" will only work if you took the photo yourself; you can't upload a photo of the arch taken by someone else regardless of the copyright status of the arch. Are there any photos (even ones taken by others) of the arch available online that you could provide a link to so that someone could get a look at the arch and maybe assess whether it could be eligible for copyright status? Is this perhaps the same arch? -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:23, 1 May 2026 (UTC)

Several questions regarding uploading screenshots from Youtube video

Hi, I just want to be clear about everything before uploading. I wanted to upload an image screenshot from this Youtube video, the video itself is, according to Youtube is under the "Creative Commons Attribution license" and is uploaded on 21st March 2026. I just wanted to make sure because (which correct me if im wrong) Youtube doesnt mention what versions of "Creative Commons" is on their video (whether its CC 3.0 or 4.0 or another). So according to this page, I assumed it'll fall under the "CC-BY 4.0" category, as per date of when the video is uploaded, is it correct?

And also, although it has the Creative Commons licensing, do I still have to ask for permissions from the uploader themselves before uploading anyway? Thank you. Ahadika9054 (talk) 14:53, 1 May 2026 (UTC)

@Ahadika9054:
  1. Yes; as an upload made since August 2025, the video in question is CC BY 4.0
  2. No, you do not need to request permission; in fact, you could upload the entire video onto Commons (all Creative Commons licences waive the right of the copyright holder to be notified before their works are used)

I'd say that, as it's your own work, you could overwrite; especially if that image hasn't been used on another project. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 18:55, 2 May 2026 (UTC)
@Xzkdeng: (I'm an admin.) Grand-Duc is wrong here. Please upload under a different filename.
If the other file was uploaded in the last week, feel free to ask for deletion by tagging its file page with {{G7}} and it will certainly be granted. Question about national archives image

Hello! File:Animal Farm strip cartoon.jpg is extracted from a flickr post by The National Archives UK. It is under the "No known copyright restriction" license and, according to their website (https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/legal/copyright/creative-commons-and-photo-sharing/) that means "that The National Archives is unaware of any current copyright restrictions on these images, either because they are Crown copyright and the copyright is waived or the term of copyright has expired. All of the images may be subject to other third party rights, such as rights of privacy. You are responsible for obtaining other such necessary permissions for reuse."

Their blog here (https://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ukgwa/20250613150054/https://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/animal-farm-the-cartoon-strip-and-the-cold-war/) has images from that same strip. one image is the full page of the one currently on commons and I believe it to be from the same source as the metadata has the same slicesgroupname of "fo1110-319ii" as the one uploaded to flickr. My question is, do these images, published by and from the same source, fall under the same licensing as the one on flickr and can I upload it to commons? thank you. Paccyd33 (talk) 15:25, 2 May 2026 (UTC)

If something is in public domain, it is in public domain anywhere. Ruslik (talk) 19:59, 2 May 2026 (UTC)

Or is there some kind of copyright owned by the Archives, since they scanned them? Paccyd33 (talk) 07:34, 3 May 2026 (UTC)
Hi Paccyd33. I am not a lawyer so to be 100% sure you might want to ask one familiar with copyright law wherever you live. My understanding is that a simple scan of a public domain work would almost certainly be considered a slavish reproduction not eligible for separate copyright protection as explained in COM:2D copying; some people, organizations, groups, etc., however, have tried to argue otherwise by stating the digitalization of a work involves sufficient effort to establish a new copyright but mostly seem to have been rebuffed by the courts whenever their claims are challenged. Such a thing is sometimes referred to as en:copyfraud. though that might imply more of a case of wrongful intent than simply a differing interpretation. From a Commons and copyright standpoint, you probably could upload the cropped image and be OK, but there's no way to say what the NA UK might try to do if you enter into some kind of en:browsewrap agreement (contract) with them when you access their sites. You might want to take a look at en:National Portrait Gallery and Wikimedia Foundation copyright dispute since it also involves UK copyright law for an example of what has happened before, particularly given that the NPG still seems to assert its copyright ownership over such works even though the UK courts appear to repeatedly have said otherwise. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:18, 3 May 2026 (UTC)
Good to know, I appreciate the response. Probably getting into legal semantics here but if I find a scan not done by the national archive and the website does not assert any rights over it, is that fair game? Sorry to bombard you guys with questions. Paccyd33 (talk) 15:37, 5 May 2026 (UTC)
@Paccyd33: as far as Commons is concerned, it is fair game regardless of who does the scan and what they claim. We do not accept that any intellectual property rights come from scanning a 2-dimensional work. We've stood by that policy for many years now, no one has chosen to challenge it in court, and I'd say that at this point those who said we'd get in trouble this way have been shown to be wrong.
The only time I can think of where we might not want a better/higher-res scan is where we have communication or even a more formal arrangement with a GLAM who have been providing us with reasonably good scans while reserving better ones for paying customers, and we might not want to endanger the relationship, but that is a pragmatic consideration, not a legal consideration. - Jmabel ! talk 20:18, 5 May 2026 (UTC)
Cheers, I've added it them File:Animal Farm comic strip, first three.jpg and File:Animal Farm comic strip 3-6.jpg but added the license review template to be sure. Paccyd33 (talk) 03:50, 6 May 2026 (UTC)
@Paccyd33: What you've written on the file pages makes no sense to me, on several counts. How can The National Archives (United Kingdom) be author of this comic? If (as I gather elsewhere) it was created by Norman Pett, how could it possibly date from 2020, long after he died? What is the basis for saying Crown Copyright (makes no sense to me; perhaps it would be clearer if there were something there about first publication)?
I could probably ask more, but let's start there. - Jmabel ! talk 04:07, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
@Jmabel: You can read more about it here (https://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ukgwa/20250613150054/https://blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk/animal-farm-the-cartoon-strip-and-the-cold-war/) but the short story is that the strip is anti-soviet propaganda created by the Information Research Department. I was under the impression I was meant to add the date and creator for the immediate source of the scan but I'll change it to the original creators of the source. @Ssilvers, hello! For future reference, you can request file renaming as described in Commons:File renaming. However, if you want to rename the file to "Black Bottom" dance (1926).jpg, then I don't think it falls under any valid criteria (1-6). I'm guessing that ~2026-26990-85 is the same person as HenryBorden, though of course I have no way to know this confidently. To be honest, I only skimmed that wall of text. At a skim I see things like "you can delete that too" (no, we are generally not looking for reasons we can delete files, we are looking for reasons we should) and "spares space on your server" is simply not the case, we virtually never do hard deletions for any reason other than CSAM (child sexual abuse material). - Jmabel ! talk 23:08, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

Question about PDF copies of photos I took myself

For the article that I'm editing I have uploaded PDF copies of photos I took myself and own. Within source coding I have entered the required codes as {{Own}}{{Cc-zero}} into the applicable file's source code as {{Own}}{{Cc-zero}}. Back in visual editing, everything looks OK except that the listing of citations at the end of the article includes for each of those citations a large box containing all the {{Own}} details even when within Read mode. Have I omitted to include source code that would have suppressed this box until the relevant citation number is actually clicked? JDWylie (talk) 06:32, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

@JDWylie: you don't need to add explicit CC image permissions in the Wikipedia article itself. It is enough that the image description contains the permission which is then visible if the reader clicks the image. MKFI (talk) 06:56, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
Thanks for that, but what I don't get is: I wasn't trying to get explicit CC image permissions within the Wikipedia article itself, but in order that the article includes the permissions, I need to do that within the source code, but when I do so, the citaltion listing at the bottom of the article shows those permissions within large blocks below each of the relevant citation numbers. JDWylie (talk) 08:52, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
I'm done here for the day, but tomorrow I'll try something that I should have thought of long ago: (a) Make a copy of those permissions (b) Delete the applicable source code (c)Post the permissions into a Postscript field within the citation template. Thanks for your help getting me there! JDWylie (talk) 09:01, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
@JDWylie: I've shortened the heading of this section since it basically the same question asked in the body of your post. I've also tweaked some of the formatting used for templates in your post because those things are better off displayed as links than as "references". I did these things because it will make it easier for others to respond to your post.
After looking at the images you uploaded, some of them appear to be the works (like buildings and statues) created by a third-party. Whether Commons can host such files sometimes depends on something referred to Commons:Freedom of panorama because the works you photographed might be eligible for copyright protection separate and independent of the copyright of your photos. If they are, then your photos could be considered Commons:Derivative works, meaning that there are multiple copyrights that Commons needs to consider. The more information you can provide about the en:provenace of the works you photographed in the respective file's description, the more helpful it will be to others trying to assess the overall copyright status of what you uploaded. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:00, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
@JDWylie: I have removed the CC/Own templates from the article. When you say but in order that the article includes the permissions, I need to do that within the source code you probably mean edits like this, but the "source code" refers to the image description source code and not article source code. Every image has its own description page in Wikicode: File:Main building, S.M. Kirov Military Medical Academy , 2014.jpg. Additionally, just adding {{Own}}{{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} is not a magic spell to help if the image is not actually freely licensed: you can't simply invent a free license where none exists. MKFI (talk) 09:14, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
Thank you very, very much. I had spent a great deal of time in unsuccessfully attempting to get around the issue within the source code. JDWylie (talk) 20:52, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
@JDWylie: I've added some information about en:Wikipedia:Conflict-of-interest editing to your English Wikipedia user talk page. Please take the time to look through it. This is not really related to the files you've uploaded to Commons; however, familiarizing yourself with relevant English Wikipedia policies and guidelines could help you avoid problems when editing English Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:11, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

Why don't image uploads (new version of existing image) increase contribution counter?

I am a bit confused about how Commons project counts user contributions. When I upload a new version of an image, such action is properly reflected in the list of user contributions, but the total count of contributions on top of the same page does not increase. So the list of contributions keeps growing, but the total does not. The only time when total count increases is when I am making any other type of edit, like modify image description. Seems like a bug to me - image uploads either should increase the total contribution counter (more preferable) or should not appear in the contribution list at all (least preferable). Doing neither of these two and still showing both metrics (the list and the total) on the same page is not logical. Am I missing something? Nyq (talk) 11:06, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

@Nyq: Hi, and welcome. For me, Special:Contributions/Nyq shows that you have made 422 edits, and that you are "A user with 422 edits", including two for the above section. The ec tool] shows 601 "Total edits" for you (600 live and one deleted). Where are you looking that shows something different, and what does it show?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 20:41, 4 May 2026 (UTC)
Exactly, I see "A user with 422 edits" on top of the Contributions page (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Nyq) and this counter does not include any image uploads, even though all these image uploads are listed in the contributions list on the very same page, which is confusing. Basically a total counter does not reflect a total number of items in the list. I tested that several times by checking the counter before each image upload and after - the result is always the same: the image upload shows up in the contributions list, but the total counter never increments after upload. It only increments if I make non-upload edits like change file descriptions. To further prove the point, I also clicked on "View 500" link on the same page and then grabbed the page content to count the number of lines, and it was 500 contributions in the list (there are more, but obviously only 500 are shown, as requested), yet the top of the page shows "422 edits". Looks like a bug to me. Nyq (talk) 15:35, 6 May 2026 (UTC)
Please see mw:Manual:User table#user editcount for the list of actions that count as an "edit" in the edit count. As stated in the page, this count is not an exactly accurate copy as the number of edit revisions you have made. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 16:10, 6 May 2026 (UTC)

I'm not sure that I understand what you're talking about with remembering clicks. If you start inputting text into an edit summary and see that there's some kind of drop-down or autocomplete that finishes your writing, that is certainly a product of your browser, not the site or its software. This is conventional information for any contemporary browser to store and how you remove it is likely part of deleting the history, but there's no way that the servers here predictively know what you are in the middle of typing until you submit it. —Justin (koavf)TCM 17:15, 4 May 2026 (UTC)

@JMF: Commons is always looking for high quality images that are licensed in accordance with COM:L; so, if you can provide such an image, feel free to upload it as a separate file (i.e., don't COM:OVERWRITE the existing File:Danzatrice.JPG with your image). You can use COM:UPLOAD to upload the file, but your image won't automatically replace the current one being used wherever it's being used; you will need to do that manually. In addition, once you've uploaded your image, you might want to edit its file description to connect it to the other image by using Template:Other versions; this will help make your image known to users of the other image and vice versa. Finally, you might want to take a look at COM:CB#Museum and interior photography for some general advice about photographing museum exhibits. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:45, 5 May 2026 (UTC)

Can I create an alt account for batch uploading?

I want to do a batch upload using Flickr2Commons, but I don't want the batch upload to clog up my user uploads page. Am I allowed to make an alt account (LetmeEditit-BatchUploads) for this purpose? Also this account would need autopatrol rights because of the rate limit, could it automatically be granted because I have autopatrol on this account? Thanks. LetmeEditit (talk) 10:48, 6 May 2026 (UTC)

You definitely can create such an account, as long as the user pages of the two accounts link to each other to make the situation clear, and you never involve both accounts in a single discussion.
As for rights, I have no experience with this particular issue, and I'm not sure how many other admins watch the help desk. If no one answers usefully soon, you might ask that question at COM:AN. - Jmabel ! talk 04:41, 7 May 2026 (UTC)

Cannot edit own watchlist when IP rangeblocked

As title. I find it a bit surprising that a logged-in user from a blocklisted IP cannot edit even their own private pages. We should consider giving logged-in IP rangeblocked users some edit right, even if only their own (talk) pages. IrisChronomia (talk) 12:28, 6 May 2026 (UTC)

@IrisChronomia: I would say you would do better to ask for an IP block exemption. - Jmabel ! talk 04:51, 7 May 2026 (UTC)

When uploading a new logo of the organization what type of license should I choose in case if the logo belongs to the organization? NESEditor (talk) 13:03, 6 May 2026 (UTC)

@NESEditor, if the logo is below the threshold of originality in its country, you can add {{PD-logo}} license (public domain). If the logo is complex, then it depends on country, type of organization, etc. Please tell the name of the organization you are talking about. Deltaspace42 (talk) 13:48, 6 May 2026 (UTC)
I am talking about the New Economic School (Российская экономическая школа), Russian page: nes.ru, and here is the logo NESEditor (talk) 13:57, 6 May 2026 (UTC)
@NESEditor I think these logos are below the threshold of originality, because it's just text and two triangles. Deltaspace42 (talk) 20:00, 6 May 2026 (UTC)
Absolutely, these are fine for Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 04:53, 7 May 2026 (UTC)

PAGE CREATION AND EDITING
I tried to create a page under my name and my work as a journalist and sociologist, author of specialized studies. The registered name should be Pino Rotta, but it was rejected, and I was forced to register Giuseppe Rotta. I'm known in Italy and abroad as Pino Rotta. How can I resolve this problem?

@Giuseppe Rotta: Ciao e benvenuto. Hai attivato Special:AbuseFilter/335 tentando di caricare un file tra wiki diversi come nuovo utente, contrariamente a proposal; puoi caricare il file qui su Commons utilizzando Special:UploadWizard. Ti preghiamo di evitare di farlo.

Hi, and welcome. You have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/335 by trying to cross-wiki upload a file as a new user per proposal; you may upload the file here on Commons with Special:UploadWizard instead. Please avoid doing that.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:09, 6 May 2026 (UTC)

Questions!

I made a new account because I lost my old one but anyways, I have a question about uploading. I have an autopsy report and a preliminary hearing pdf and I am wondering if they are allowed to be uploaded the wikimedia commons. The autopsy report has no pictures nor the prelim hearing pdf.

Many Thanks Xsassx Xsassx (talk) 01:33, 7 May 2026 (UTC)

  • @Xsassx: that is not the information that will tell us whether it is appropriate for Commons. Two possible issues here:
    1. If it relates to a notable matter, then it is probably in Commons' Scope. If it's just about the death of some random non-notable person, then it probably is not.
    2. Copyright: you say nothing here about when this dates from, by whom, etc. See COM:THIRD for an overview of the issues involved.

Photo of Samsung Medical Center building in Seoul

I work for Samsung Medical Center, but this was a photograph I personally took in May 2025 of the exterior of Samsung Medical Center, known in Korean as 삼성서울병원, in Gangnam District, Seoul, South Korea. I believe I am the photographer/copyright holder of the photograph and am willing to release my rights in the photograph under CC BY-SA 4.0.

Before uploading, I would like to ask whether this type of photograph is acceptable on Commons, given South Korea's freedom of panorama rules. The image primarily shows the exterior of a modern hospital building and its signage.

Would Commons require permission from the building or architectural copyright holder, or can this be uploaded as my own work?

Thank you. MaxLee0121 (talk) 04:53, 7 May 2026 (UTC)

@MaxLee0121: If it is a building in South Korea and the architect is alive or died after 1955, we cannot have the photo on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 04:59, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification. I will not upload the photograph to Commons. MaxLee0121 (talk) 05:33, 7 May 2026 (UTC)

Uploading photograph with large file size; TIFF

I want to upload a photograph with a fairly large file size, though well beneath the 100 MB limit for uploading. The photograph is in the TIFF file format.

According to Commons:First steps/Quality and description, "Generally speaking, image quality and resolution should be as high as possible so images can be used in high-quality printouts... and storage space is not restricted, so concerns about download time and size should not keep you from uploading the highest resolution file available." However, later on the page, it reads, "For photographs, use JPEG (file extension .jpg or .jpeg). While TIFF offers higher quality, these files tend to be rather large, especially when they are not compressed... it too produces excessively large file sizes for high-resolution photographs... Please optimize JPEG images (this reduces size at no cost to decoding)."

I feel that these two quotes contradict each other. Can someone clarify, should I upload the photograph in the JPEG or TIFF file format? AquaAlien (talk) 05:39, 7 May 2026 (UTC)
