Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Com:Speedy delete and Com:Redirects

As a courtesy to other editors, it is Commons:Signatures policy to sign your posts on talk pages, user talk pages, deletion requests, and noticeboards. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and the date will then automatically be added along with a timestamp when you save your comment. What is hard about working with the community?

Hi. There are very clear guidelines about category renames at Com:Rename a category. How and why do you think that you just can ignore the years of consensus of category naming (Com:Category names) and change things just because you feel like it?

We work here together, and if you think that there is something that needs a change, check to understand what has been done. Follow the existing thinking and if you think that there is a need for something different, or that there is a problem, then talk to your community members and reach a consensus.

To also note that normal and inexperienced users moving categories is really not a good idea at the best of times. I encourage you to reread guidance. Talk to the community through places like Com:Village pump. Breaking things and not showing the ability to listen, to learn and to communicate are not encouraged traits. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:31, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

For example, File:Flag of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic.png isn't eligible for speedy deletion because both the colors aren't the same and the format isn't the same. This move has been undone. It is not in consistency with subcategories, Wikidata, German Wikipedia and beyond. Please start a CfD whether or not the English Wikipedia name should also be used on Commons instead of doing such an impactful change right away. Car category moves

Hi,
Please stop moving pages to have the model years at the front. It makes it harder to categorize photos as you have to know exactly when the production started and ended. Furthermore, please undo all of the changes you have made as they are unhelpful and cause unnecessary difficulty in categorizing photos.

I'm not sure why you need to move a file talk page with Special:Diff/1190629352, but please refrain from such nonsense. Redirects don't need a talk page per COM:GCSD#G2.
