- Hi All, I'm mostly active on the English Wikipedia and these days mostly only as the person running the educational WikiProject WP:APBIO. I'd like to have permissio to overwrite files so that I can submit improved versions on the project diagrams, for instance File:Shark Anatomy.svg is a very useful and needed diagram and well done, but I need to trim the margins and change some of the line and word contrast as the student has finished the course. Thank you. Earthdirt (talk) 17:12, 11 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Earthdirt, you didn't care to read the note at the top of this page bcoz if you did, you wouldn't have written this request at the top of the section. Also, you used URLs instead of internal wikilinks. I had to make some fixes in your request (See Revision #1229435080). I think you probably need to work a bit more on Commons before getting autopatrol. In the meantime, you can request to overwrite files at COM:OWR. As for the file you mentioned, I've allowed overwriting on it, you may proceed on that. Thanks. Shaan SenguptaTalk 17:39, 11 June 2026 (UTC)

If the approver could leave a link as to how to do this correctly (without damaging metadata and such) that would be welcome as well. Thanks- MKH1020 (talk) 18:45, 22 June 2026 (UTC)

- Hello,I am on a mission to overwrite images from The Lushai Chrysalis and some United States Senate portraits and US House of Representatives press images and other related to United States Congress and Mizo History which are all Public Domain. I would like to request the Autopatrol right if I am applicable to have one, I have edited 500 times and mostly uploaded high quality scans of oil paintings and portraits of missionaries and historical Mizo images as some of the images uploaded in Mizoram category are mostly low quality and I have found ways to acquire high quality scans through URL editing Thank you. mska (talk) 20:26, 20 July 2026 (UTC)

- yes, I've learnt alot as I was you know like every other guy on the internet before. Ive read and learnt copyright laws from different countries and also about Creative Commons licenses and their usage like PD-US, CC0, CC-BY-SA, etc. After editing and being on Wikipedia and Wikimedia a lot more, I have now good experience and have a good knowledge about copyright. Just want to apologise for the previous mistakes as I was not aware about derivative works. Thank you very much for responding mska (talk) 05:16, 25 July 2026 (UTC)

- Hi everyone! I am working on updating Mexican road signs to new standards, and that involves replacing pictograms and typefaces. In particular, to this last point, all of the road shields that Commons currently has have been drawn to the now-obsolete 1986 standard, which made use of a typeface similar to the FHWA alphabets; in 2023, these were redrawn to be a bit softer and now use a very different font called Mexico. I could start uploading the new shields with different names, of course, but that would entail reworking the code of countless templates and Lua modules on many Wikipedia editions (and external sites like the AARoads Wiki) that relies on the existing file names remaining as they are, which means overwriting is in order. Any changes I make would comply with the overwriting policy as, I believe, would constitute minor improvements (albeit quite noticeable—as said, a totally different font would be a surprising sight for anyone not acquainted with the standards). Thank you. Too Classy for This World (talk) 23:14, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

- @JFVoll, thanks for applying. Can you show some examples of the rename requests you've made so far. I could only find two. If that's all, I think you should make some requests now, that will help us assess your understanding of our renaming guildelines. Shaan SenguptaTalk 07:59, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- @Shaan Sengupta I've made 5 more edit requests. JFVoll (talk) 10:47, 7 August 2026 (UTC)
- Ok, I've performed those requests. I am now more concerned than I was before bcoz of the kind of mistakes there were in those file names. A Filemover is expected to be extra careful while naming files. Also, when you are requesting renaming for a file where you are the uploader, use Criterion 1 and give the reason eg. to correct typo, etc. That's my feedback here, someone else will take a call. Thanks. Shaan SenguptaTalk 11:52, 7 August 2026 (UTC)

- Again, look at the number of successful rename requests they made prior to applying here, and then look at yours. That's the only difference. I previously told you that the number of edits, uploads, etc., doesn't hold as much weight in a filemover application as the history of rename requests. I do not appreciate this level of desperation. Period. Shaan SenguptaTalk 03:12, 8 August 2026 (UTC)

Comment JFVoll, you are not being treated «like a nobody», you asked for a right to move files and are being asked follow up questions. That is normal and «like somebody». File movers are allowed to move files and that can create a serious problems for uploaders. For example, did you know that there is a bug in MW which automatically renames .jpeg file into .jpg as soon as the move takes place. This means that if you move a file and that move is to be reverted, nobody actually can give the original name back as it was. I have no opinion on whether or not you are to be granted this right, and I wish you well. ℺ Gone Postal (〠 ✉ • ✍ ⏿) 03:19, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- I was only going to edit the files I uploaded but I give up. I do as they sat, and they just make me feel worse. JFVoll (talk) 03:21, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- I do feel your pain. I have had some files which I named differently than my current naming convention and now they are annoying me. If you were only going to use the right on your own files, I think the best course of action is to request a file move for them. Be well! ℺ Gone Postal (〠 ✉ • ✍ ⏿) 03:31, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- My problem is that I was too inconsistent in my naming convention, and I wanted to clean it up, but I lost interest in doing that now. JFVoll (talk) 03:38, 8 August 2026 (UTC)
- I'm very sorry if you feel this way. Shaan Sengupta's words might be a little stinging and harsh, but if you take a look at the requests above and below yours, and also at English Wikipedia's requests for permissions, you will realise that it is normal to have many unprocessed requests, and many other applicants have been waiting longer than you. Admins are also volunteers with a real life, just like you and everyone else here. Plus it is normal to have some back and forth when applying for rights. What we are looking for is not edit quantity, but quality. When Shaan Sengupta asked you to make some file renaming requests, he wanted to assess whether you understand our file renaming guidelines, so that you will not perform renames that are against guideline once you get the rights. This is a form of due diligence. Your edit count and upload count do not matter much when you apply for file renaming rights, as we are not judging your uploads and edit history, but your understanding of file renaming guidelines, which is shown when you submit file rename requests here. I hope you understand where I am coming from, and I wish you all the best here. Jianhui67 T★C 05:02, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- Naming guidelines is not rocket science. I fully understand the guidelines, however, I wouldn't have asked for naming rights if the tmbox at the top didn't say "least 1,000 useful, non-botlike edits or a large number of justified renaming requests at" (emphasis mine). Perhaps this box should be changed to "and" because it seems like renaming requests seem to matter more. How many requests is sufficient to know the guidelines? I made a few requests as the bequest of Shaan Sengupta, and they threw more doubt at me.
- I don't see how targeting me is making me want to volunteer more on here, I feel unappreciated despite doing everything I asked for. I don't even care anymore if I get it because of this whole rigamarole that just makes me feel unappreciated. JFVoll (talk) 12:14, 9 August 2026 (UTC)
- That very tmbox says
As a rough guideline, administrators usually require editors... before they will consider granting the filemover right.
That is a rough guideline, more like an advice to the applicants. It nowhere says that it binds an admin to grant the rights immediately upon request. I still fail to understand how 2-3 days is a lot of time. There are literally so many older pending requests on this very page than you who have been patiently waiting. (And I wonder what choice of words do I use to make you feel "appreciated" and "like somebody"). Shaan SenguptaTalk 12:46, 9 August 2026 (UTC)

- Current administrator and long-time pagemover at the English Wikipedia. I've often started uploading a series of files and then realized partway through that a better naming convention would've been better, and I've also semi-regularly come across files with inaccurate or misleading filenames.
