hCaptcha system broken
Hello. I'm MGeog2022 user. I don't have an email address associated with my account, I have dynamic IP and I don't keep cookies in my browser, so I suppose this makes me more exposed to this type of problem. Until very recently, I was often prompted for a captcha on login; then, I filled it, and everything was right. With the new captcha system, this is a disaster: when prompted for a captcha, even if correctly selecting the right option, I'm not allowed to login. Since this change, I've been able to log in only when not prompted for a captcha (something that, of course, is beyond my control). I want to continue contributing to Commons and Wikipedia, and, at least for now, also to continue using this account. I value the privacy of not having to link my Wikimedia account to a personal email or phone, and I hope this can continue to be so. So I'd like to ask, to whoever can do something, for the captcha system to be fixed. Login being a lottery is just not acceptable. ~2026-37045-87 (talk) 10:24, 27 June 2026 (UTC)
- @MGeog2022 i asked for ipbe for you Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#c-RoyZuo-20260706175300-ipbe. try logging in if you get ipbe. RoyZuo (talk) 17:55, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- @RoyZuo, thanks a lot! OK, I see the problem is solved for me for a year. I had to use the captcha, but this time it worked, that's the big difference. I totally understand for the need to use a captcha in these cases (even the new type of captcha that is far less user-friendly than the older), but I can't understand login being completely blocked only because changing IP, clearing cookies and not having an attached email (Wikimedia accounts don't need an attached email, it's optional, and it's normal to change IP and/or clear cookies). Maybe I'm not the only user affected by this. In any case, thanks again :) MGeog2022 (talk) 12:39, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- @MGeog2022 i'm happy that my little help worked. it was so coincidental coz i seldom visit this page. i feel disappointed that no one else understood your problem and helped you until your post was almost archived after 10 days and i happened to see it in time.
- as for the future, you just gotta ask for ipbe again and hope someone grant it to you.
- i share your views on wmf's rules about ip, email, etc., and find them unreasonable and contrary to what they claim to achieve. RoyZuo (talk) 13:21, 8 July 2026 (UTC)
- @RoyZuo, what really puzzles me are not the (supposed) rule changes, but such changes being applied without any type of prior warning. That is, if WMF decides, with the support of the community, that an attached email address is now compulsory, I would disagree, but I'd accept it, and assume that the change was made for a good reason, and then cease to use my account, or attach an email address to it. But a policy change that will render accounts unusable needs a prior warning, with enough time (for example, a talk page message some weeks/months before the change is applied). I fear that other people without attached email will have nasty surprises when they change to a new device, for example, so I believe something should be done about this. Uploading Torah reading audio files
I am trying to upload my Torah reading audio files on the BSD, but without success due to copyright issues. The creators are me on the BSD.- Assuming that you were trying to use MP3 as file format, אברהם יוסף זיידה, the upload block was due to you not having sufficient software rights, see Commons:File types#MP3. Use OGV instead, that should work. And what is "BSD"? You won't be able to directly upload from an URL (same thing: not enough rights), do that from your hard disk on your PC instead.

- Right. Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file or files with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, arrangers, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request COM:AP group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. In the meantime, please reencode that/those and other audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload them with full documentation as .ogg files. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:31, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- @Ziv: I think that you'll be able as HE-3 user to overcome language barriers that Jeff or I encounter and deal with machine translations. Could you please help, too? The Wikimedian is in danger to get deterred, I fear, so a communication in Hebrew using COM:FS and similar should help. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 16:07, 30 June 2026 (UTC)
- @אברהם יוסף זיידה: you and your contributions are very welcome! But it is admittedly complicated to find the way through the jungle of policies, rules and guidelines. Thus, I asked for the help of another user (named Ziv) who is likely able to communicate directly in Hebrew with you - I have to rely upon machine translations. Please wait for that. - @Paul Jennings: If your systems can't deal with the original name or the URL https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Saint-Paixent_Priory_Lawsuit_and_Inventory_Pages_1_and_3_(1733).pdf then they are broken. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:57, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Paul Jennings: all the basics for creating and using categories should be at Commons:Categories. If you read that and still can't work it out, please feel free to come back with a question.
- Also, I agree with Jeff that File:Saint-Paixent Priory Lawsuit and Inventory Pages 1 and 3 (1733).pdf is a perfectly normal file name, and if your system has trouble with that, then the problem is probably on your end. - Jmabel ! talk 19:57, 3 July 2026 (UTC)

Changing the logo of de:Bundesfreiwilligendienst
Dear editors,
I am currently trying to update the logo that is added to the page de:Bundesfreiwilligendienst since I work for the Bundesamt für Familie und zivilgesellschaftliche Aufgaben (BAFzA) that is administring the Bundesfreiwilligendienst. Since the logo is not a creative common I guess I would have to change it over on the actual page, but I don't seem to have the rights to edit or even upload a file there. Could you please help me to find the right way for updating the logo? Thanks in advance! Boss Jonas (talk) 08:45, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Boss Jonas: If you can link us to an example of the new logo, we can tell you whether it would be eligible for Commons.
- Other than that, though, this sounds like mostly a de-wiki issue, and would better be asked (in German) at de:Wikipedia:Fragen von Neulingen. - Jmabel ! talk 20:08, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks so much already for your answer! You can find the logo on the top right corner on this website https://www.bundesfreiwilligendienst.de/ - since we use our written out slogan in the logo I just presume that it is not eligible for commons? Boss Jonas (talk) 05:08, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Boss Jonas: my non-expert opinion is that the design of the two orange people may be above the Commons:Threshold of originality, so de:Wikipedia is the best route. You have received some advice there, it seems you need to wait until you are an "Automatisch bestätigte Benutzer", which should happen four days after you first logged on to de:Wikipedia. You also have a message on your de user page about disclosing paid editing, which you should look at. TSventon (talk) 16:13, 3 July 2026 (UTC)

Copyright violation/incorrect rationale?
Recently on enwiki, two images (File:Robin Wesman.jpg and File:Sayers mugshot, taken at the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.webp) were uploaded to Commons and linked on enwiki by @Elina Dale. These images were uploaded as "own work" which does not seem possible as they are driver's license photos and therefore state property, and in different states no less. I know in some states these are considered public domain, but either way, the rationale here is incorrect. I'm unsure what the process on commons is for rectifying this issue, so I wanted to leave a message here to request help in following the correct procedures for fixing this. Thanks. Wasianpower (talk) 15:34, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Wasianpower: The uploader is still active on en-wiki. If you want to salvage the photos, you might start by contacting them to see if they can help sort this out. Otherwise, I'd start a deletion request for each of these, and say that clearly the licensing is wrong, although you suspect the image may be in the public domain, in which case it would be good if someone could tag it correctly and keep it. - Jmabel ! talk 20:17, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- Both Minnesota and California hold that all works created by the their employees are in public domain (See: {{PD-MGS}} and {{PD-CAGov}}). So, you just put those tags on the respective images. Ruslik (talk) 20:24, 2 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Ruslik0: I'm not sure {{PD-MGS}} would apply to mugshots; it seems to only apply to works created by employees of the en:Minnesota Geological Survey, not the State of Minnesota itself. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:35, 3 July 2026 (UTC)

Netanelile (talk) 06:23, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Netanelile: I see the file has now been deleted as a copyright violation. It appears you uploaded someone's profile picture from Instagram. Please make sure you are only uploading files that you have the rights to (e.g. photos you took yourself), or files that are otherwise verifiably freely licensed or public domain files.
- In the future, if you upload a file with an incorrect filename, you can request the file simply be renamed instead of deleted. See Commons:File renaming for more details and instructions. ~Kevin Payravi (talk) 10:38, 3 July 2026 (UTC)

Issue with Template "Done"
Hello,
I recently described what I thought to be an issue: Template "Done" (discussion "Last documented example doesn't work") Was it right put it onthe Template's discussion page? Or should I better describe the problem here, on the help page? If needed I will transfer the discussion here.

Suggestion for mass rename
The category at Category:Bell Telephone Magazine by year has 30 subcategories, each for a year of the magazine, such as Category:Bell Telephone Magazine, 1965. The vast majority of images in these subcategories have filenames that start with "Bell telephone magazine (1922)", even though they are not from 1922. The subcategories reflect the correct years for the images, so I'm hoping somebody can mass-rename the files to the correct years. It would be helpful to also mass-correct the "Date" field in the metadata on each image (example showing incorrect "date" metadata).
I see it's possible to file a mass-rename request using the instructions at User:Deltaspace42/mass-rename-request, but I'm not sure that's a good idea for me to do for this many files.
This is similar to the issue I noted at Commons:Help_desk/Archive/2026/03#Metadata issues with AMNH books from Internet Archive, so I'm tagging @Jmabel in case you're up for helping again. (No worries if not!) Dreamyshade (talk) 17:29, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Alexis Jazz: since the tool I had tried for this was apparently a mess, I'm guessing that I should not try that again. I believe you created a new tool rather than fix the old one, right? - Jmabel ! talk 20:11, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
- Jmabel, yes, User:Alexis Jazz/AJSBulkRename (there's a demonstration video now!). There could still be bugs but it seems to work well now. It was originally meant to be a simple quick project, until I found out CommonsDelinker can't replace local uses (which in turn may be a MediaWiki bug) so the script had to grow to accommodate all that. And if I have to handle local replacements anyway, I might as well provide the option for global replacements.. and then I'm like "it should also remove those pesky {{Rename}} templates and load their suggestions" and again more work.
But I'm sure it'll work better than User:Perhelion/massrename.js. 😅 - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:23, 3 July 2026 (UTC)- @Alexis Jazz: I have it working (doing Category:Bell Telephone Magazine, 1929 to test it at this moment); three remarks: (1) Basically seems to work. (2) Pretty slow, no? Do you think that's inherently going to be the case?
(2)(3) The UI is much less clear than it could be, can we work together on that at some point? In particular, the desired sequence of actions is not obvious, and a few of the names are "cute" in a way that could really confuse anyone who is not a very fluent English speaker. - Jmabel ! talk 00:31, 4 July 2026 (UTC)- Jmabel, (1) Awesome! (2) Which part? A considerable chunk of time is simply waiting for the API to respond. The "move" action in particular takes a while, I see the API taking 3-4 seconds to respond. Running more operations in parallel might be possible, but then you'd have to start worrying about ratelimiting. And once you've started it, unlike the older script, you can more or less walk away. (2) Why are there two twos? Sure, can you make a mock-up or something? I know the cat emoji is cute. I need to have fun sometimes. This is all I get. 😿 - Alexis Jazz ping plz 01:02, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Alexis Jazz: Two 2's because I belatedly added (1) and only changed one affected number. Fixed.
- I ran into enough trouble on 1930 that I think I'm going to ask you to take over, because I can't do much with the errors I'm encountering. I'll do my best to enumerate them here. I know some of this will be familiar, but I suspect some won't:
- First thing is entirely my own stupidity/ineptitude. I know I'm asking you to clean up my error, sorry, and if you like I'll try to fix it myself, but I'm afraid I might compound some of the issues below. What I did wrong: I wrote "1929" instead of "1930" as the replacement, so right now all the 1930 files say "1929" where they should say "1930". Mea maxima culpa.
- fa-wiki won't replace File:Bell telephone magazine (1922) (14569847558).jpg ("abusefilter-warning fa.wikipedia.org) or File:Bell telephone magazine (1922) (14569859438).jpg ("NOT FOUND").
- The following files all show "del" in red rather than green at left. I have no idea what that means.
- The following filenames continue to have an entry for Commons in the "jittery" state even after giving things over an hour to settle:
- I have several more warnings but as I just discovered when trying to copy one in either Arabic or (more likely) Farsi, if I click on them they vanish, so there is no easy way to copy them.
- I'm afraid the one I clicked on is simply lost.
- One says simply "http". (Maybe as against "https"?)
- Two say simply "internal_API_error_DBQueryError".
- One says "Edit conflict while trying to edit File:Bell telephone magazine (1922) (14569859438).jpg on commons.wikimedia.org, waiting 30 seconds, do not close"
- One says "Edit conflict while trying to edit File:Bell telephone magazine (1922) (14753300891).jpg on commons.wikimedia.org, waiting 30 seconds, do not close"
- These last two appear to correspond to what stayed "jittery".
- FWIW, no clues in the browser console. Jmabel ! talk 02:31, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- Jmabel,
so right now all the 1930 files say "1929" where they should say "1930".
There's a warning at the top that says "AJSBulkRename follows the GIGO philosophy".
I'll look, but no promises. I'm still working on Don Ramey.
You didn't happen to screenshot anything, did you?
abusefilter-warning: fawiki hates you, ignore it. (or ask fawiki admins to stop hating you) the script called CommonsDelinker for you.The following files all show "del" in red rather than green at left. I have no idea what that means.
It means wonky CSS,but was nothing else red on those rows?this seems to happen with those http/DBQueryError cases.
http / internal_API_error_DBQueryError: blame the WMF developers: phab:T431156These last two appear to correspond to what stayed "jittery".
: probably a bug with the handling of edit conflicts and rate limiting errors. I'll have to look at that. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 03:07, 4 July 2026 (UTC) - OK, I'll try the 1930 ones again; just worried how double moves will work out on the ones that were wonky the first time. - Jmabel ! talk 04:48, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- Also, somehow (possibly for unrelated causes) File:Bell telephone magazine (1922) (14753300151).jpg seems to have its image messed up. I will leave that one alone for now. - Jmabel ! talk 05:02, 4 July 2026 (UTC)

- @Alexis Jazz: not sure what you mean by "uncooks the database" (fixes something? what?) but I'm definitely not proceeding past the 1930 stuff at this time. I find I can clean some of that by hand.
- By the way @Dreamyshade, it looks like there are a lot of wrong dates within the file pages as well (things that say 1922 rather than the correct year). That can presumably be fixed with VFC, which you can presumably do as readily as anyone else. Since you obviously care about this, could you take that part on yourself? - Jmabel ! talk 05:50, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you @Jmabel and @Alexis Jazz for taking on these file renames! Looks like VFC is Help:VisualFileChange.js. I didn't know about this, looks fun - I'll try it out for the metadata updates. Dreamyshade (talk) 17:25, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- Barring things that might be wonky on sister projects, Category:Bell Telephone Magazine, 1930 is now largely done, except for File:Bell telephone magazine (1922) (14753300151).jpg because it has a broken thumbnail, and I'm not going to try to move it. - Jmabel ! talk 05:55, 4 July 2026 (UTC)
- Jmabel, if a botched move caused File:Bell telephone magazine (1922) (14753300151).jpg to vanish, the database could be cooked "(slang, chiefly predicative) In trouble; in a hopeless situation." If that's not the case (some files have vanished randomly in the past, see a variety of swift-storage tickets on Phabricator), there still is/was an issue that caused the DBQueryError/"http" (in this context, "http" means the server never answered, so there is no error). If that has already been resolved, okay. I just wouldn't like to try to mass-move (or mass-anything) while the API is regularly failing. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 06:33, 4 July 2026 (UTC)

- Jmabel, (1) Awesome!
- @Alexis Jazz: I have it working (doing Category:Bell Telephone Magazine, 1929 to test it at this moment); three remarks: (1) Basically seems to work. (2) Pretty slow, no? Do you think that's inherently going to be the case?
- Jmabel, yes, User:Alexis Jazz/AJSBulkRename (there's a demonstration video now!). There could still be bugs but it seems to work well now. It was originally meant to be a simple quick project, until I found out CommonsDelinker can't replace local uses (which in turn may be a MediaWiki bug) so the script had to grow to accommodate all that. And if I have to handle local replacements anyway, I might as well provide the option for global replacements.. and then I'm like "it should also remove those pesky {{Rename}} templates and load their suggestions" and again more work.
- ┌──────────────────────────────┘
Jmabel, usually I wait for the Phabricator peoples to say something. So far it's rather quiet. Maybe just try a small amount, like 5 files, if you don't get any http or DBQueryErrors try 10, then 20, etc. If you try, please let me know whether you still got errors. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 06:12, 5 July 2026 (UTC) - FWIW I've tried using it on some categories that probably have fewer files in use on sister projects, and I've done fine there. - Jmabel ! talk 06:34, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- I tried it just now on 5 files in Category:Bell Telephone Magazine, 1932, and the results were quirky enough that I think I'm not going to pursue this at this time. All five files moved, but for File:Bell telephone magazine (1922) (14569732060).jpg (moved 1922->1932) I got "NOT FOUND en.wikipedia.org Portal:Amateur_radio" (no idea why it would be expected to be found there) and "permissiondenied ru.wikinews.org Категория:5G" (in an infobox, and it won't let me edit the page by hand). I've also got a message about an edit conflict moving File:Bell telephone magazine (1922) (14569767169) (cropped).jpg, and again the "jittery" filename; the file appears to have moved successfully. - Jmabel ! talk 01:08, 7 July 2026 (UTC)

{{Transclude list item excerpts as random slideshow | files=1 | more=| Portal:Amateur radio/Selected antenna| }}which refers to w:en:Portal:Amateur radio/Selected antenna which contains a link to w:en:Beverage antenna which includes the image in question. So it was listed on GlobalUsage, but it's random and may (dis)appear as the page is purged. CommonsDelinker (if it was running..) would fail the same way.
Wikinews became read-only on May 4 so it's not surprising you can't edit there. I need to exclude wikinews from the globalusage because no edit there will ever succeed.
The edit conflict issue I need to test more thoroughly. It seems however that the default file moving tool doesn't even bother trying to update existing usage and links on Commons, so it's not like that's better. AJSBulkRename is just having some trouble with the "extra credit" section which no other tool even attempts. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 02:11, 7 July 2026 (UTC)- @Alexis Jazz: so do you think I should simply continue? Request for permission.
Hello, I would like to upload two photographs to Wikimedia Commons and I would appreciate some advice regarding its copyright status. The image depicts the Red Hot Chili Peppers performing at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza (San Siro), Milan, Italy, during the concert held on 8 June 2004. The photograph was found in a publicly accessible Google Photos album entitled “RHCP, 7 giu–3 lug 2004”, but I can’t post the link. I do not know the identity of the photographer, so I would list the author as Unknown. Based on the concert date, the album title, and comparison with publicly available videos of the performance, I am confident that the photograph was taken at the Milan concert on 8 June 2004. As far as I understand, if this is considered a simple photograph under Italian copyright law (rather than a creative photographic work), the related rights have already expired because the photograph was taken before 1 January 2005. For this reason, I believe it may qualify for {{PD-Italy}}. Before uploading the file, I would like to ask whether the available evidence regarding the date, venue, and provenance is considered sufficient to apply {{PD-Italy}}, or whether additional documentation would be required. Thank you very much for your advice. SirPsych0 (talk) 20:30, 3 July 2026 (UTC)
- I'm not sure about whether it qualifies for Italian public domain--your reasoning seems sound, but I am not familiar with that law. However, per Commons:Licensing, "uploads of non-U.S. works are normally allowed only if the work is either in the public domain or covered by a valid free license in both the U.S. and the country of origin of the work." U.S. law does not make the same distinction of types of photographic works. SomeoneDreaming (talk) 01:23, 4 July 2026 (UTC)

Anonimisering profiel Wikimedia
Beste heer/mevrouw,
Enige tijd geleden heb ik verzocht om mijn gebruikersnaam te wijzigen naar User58264190, met als doel mijn account zo veel mogelijk te anonimiseren. Dat verzoek lijkt (nog) niet te zijn doorgevoerd. Mijn belangrijkste doel is anonimiseren, waardoor mijn identiteit niet meer langer zichtbaar is in mijn account. Het liefste zou ik het account met de foto's verwijderen, maar ik heb begrepen dat dit niet gaat. Vandaar dat ik nu aanstuur op een naamswijziging van mijn account. Kunt u mij aangeven: -hoe ik mijn gebruikersnaam alsnog kan laten wijzigen; -of de voorgestelde gebruikersnaam (User58264190) voldoet en zo niet, waarom dan niet en waar de gebruikersnaam aan moet voldoen; -of er een specifieke procedure of pagina is voor een verzoek tot globale hernoeming; en welke mogelijkheden er bestaan om mijn account verder te anonimiseren;
Ik hoop dat u mij wilt helpen, zodat ik dit vraagstuk op korte termijn kan afronden. Alvast hartelijk dank voor het meedenken.

- @Kevonrare: I don't understand what you want to ask. "Prepared 8 videos and 347 photos as early the wiki website had shown me" - what do you want to say? What is "prepared" meant to express? This word doesn't really make sense. Did you perhaps bookmark some categories or gallery pages? If yes, it is easily possible that some editor added new media to them. If you were speaking about some stuff you uploaded somewhere: As of now, your account was registered on 2026-06-23, and you have only ONE edit (the one here above) in any Wikimedia project per Special:CentralAuth/Kevonrare. Please provide more data about your inquiry. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 02:36, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Kevonrare: also, if there is another language where you can be clearer than in English, please use it. - Jmabel ! talk 04:17, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- I guess the numbers are from Category:Wiki Loves Earth 2026 in Uganda. @Kevonrare: if this page is where you found your numbers, it is the total number of all images and videos from all participants, and it goes up everytime you or someone else uploads a new file. There is no minimum number of works you need to upload. MKFI (talk) 07:43, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
Structured description for photograph of sculpture
I'm trying to edit the description page of File:Budapest3-zsigmond-kiraly-mellszobor-r0.jpg (and two other photos) to include properly structured templates that are easily readable by automated tools, such as those that that put data to Wikidata. I'm stuck about how to use the templates in a few places and I'd appreciate some help. Currently I'm trying to use {{Art Photo}}, but I can change this to a more appropriate template if there's one. Here's what I don't know how to represent:
- The date when the photo was published on a non-Wikimedia website, 2017-07-27. I think {{Original upload date}} is inappropriate because it seems to mean that the photo was published on another Wikimedia site before it was moved to Commons. {{Published on}} might work, but it's not clear how that distinguishes when the sculpture was published from when the photo was published.
- That the material of the bust is limestone. The documentation of {{Art Photo}} points me to Category:Multilingual tags: Techniques, which has a template for bronze as material, but not limestone (or marble for example).
- That the photograph was taken by the same artist who created the sculpture.
- That the bust is approximately life-size, i.e. same size as the person depicted.
– b_jonas 13:05, 5 July 2026 (UTC)
- @B jonas:
- I don't know how best to indicate a publication date for the photo, but it seems to me you could add a semicolon and {{Published on}} after the photo date.
- It's great to use multilingual tags for materials and techniques where they exist, but where they don't, just use normal words, possibly inside of {{En}} or whatever other language you prefer. Note that if you create a Wikidata item for the work in question, and then use that in Art Photo, anyone whose language is covered by the Wikidata item for the particular material or technique will see it displayed in their own language by Art Photo.
- Two ways to indicate that the photograph was taken by the same artist who created the sculpture, and they are not mutually exclusive: use exactly the same text to indicate the person as creator of the object and photographer; say so explicitly in the photo description ("Photo by the artist").
- If you can give dimensions, that makes this clear. I'm not sure whether there is a good way to state approximate dimensions. Failing that, you can always say it explicitly in the description of the work.

Permission and guidance for uploading a CC BY research paper
Dear, I am Research Professor Dinh-Huy Nguyen, the author of a peer-reviewed research paper published in the journal Theranostics (Ivyspring International Publisher). I would like to upload the full PDF of my paper and several key figures to Wikimedia Commons to enhance the quality of scientific articles related to "bacteriotherapy" and "cancer immunotherapy." The paper details are as follows: Title: A clinically translatable, irreversibly attenuated Salmonella strain as a next-generation adjuvant for checkpoint immunotherapy Link: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13294988/ License: This article is published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license, which allows for free distribution and reuse with proper attribution. I would like to ask for guidance on the best way to proceed: Should I upload the full PDF as a single file? Is it preferred to upload individual high-resolution figures (PNG/JPG) for use in Wikipedia articles? Are there any specific templates I should use during the Upload Wizard to ensure the CC BY license from Theranostics is correctly recognized? Thank you for your assistance in helping me contribute to the open-access scientific knowledge on Wikipedia. Dinh-Huy Nguyen-1984 (talk) 15:52, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Dinh-Huy Nguyen-1984: Please upload both the full PDF and a separate file for each figure. If there are a significant number of figures, then you will probably want to create a category for the paper and place everything in that category.
- If you state https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC13294988/ as the source, then the license is clear from that source. I'd recommend also tagging (immediately below the license) with {{LicenseReview}}, which should in principle get an admin to confirm that license in case the source ever becomes unavailable, though that process is quite backlogged. - Jmabel ! talk 19:08, 6 July 2026 (UTC)
What's the line between anatomical nudity and straight up porn?
- Expert19612005 (talk · contributions · Statistics · Recent activity · block log · User rights log · uploads · Global account information)
Ran across a group of images that appear to be a user utilizing Commons to host/show off their...particular interests. Similar images of the same individual are also hosted on other sites specific to that purpose. According to the file data they aren't in use by any pages where they might serve an encyclopedic purpose. Is there any guideline for when images containing adult material are or are not appropriate? ChompyTheGogoat (talk) 04:52, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- COM:PORN has some guidance and links. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 05:58, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Upon further inspection, the user has already been indeffed for their use of this content, but somehow their (extensive) contributions are still live. It appears a mass deletion request by username is the appropriate procedure? ChompyTheGogoat (talk) 06:36, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Since you are asking this without any specifics, it is very hard to give a definitive answer. Keep in mind, though, that nudity and pornography are not inherently out of scope. It's more like a negative-tilting factor in deciding whether to keep a given file or not, especially when the issue that could lead to deletion is simply low technical quality. E.g. we are not going to delete the umpteenth mediocre photo of the Eiffel Tower, but we are going to delete the umpteenth mediocre photo of human genitalia or sexual activity. Also, I can't think what would be considered a "creepshot" of the Eiffel Tower, but it is pretty easy to identify and delete "creepshots" involving nudity and sexuality. - Jmabel ! talk 20:18, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Yeah, that was the case here. The guideline helped clarify. The individual does have unusual anatomy, but was clearly posting for personal gratification and not informational purposes. There are other images in the category that have more value, and I didn't report those ones.
- I didn't want to plaster nudity here for people who don't want to see it, but it's in the requests (and my contribs). Lots of other nudity listed too. Looks like that's the Commons version of self promotional AI slop. ChompyTheGogoat (talk) 21:02, 7 July 2026 (UTC)

- Fair point, but I think their indef for this exact behavior speaks for itself. I don't believe the images add any substantive value not already present in the related category. At any rate, they've been listed for deletion, so users with more experience than me can make that determination. ChompyTheGogoat (talk) 03:25, 8 July 2026 (UTC)

Category : videos 2026 wiki loves earth
I submitted 2 videos which appear when I search for my page Kevonrare but the two videos aren’t among the 13 videos that have been so far received under statistics. What does this mean? Kevonrare (talk) 04:56, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- Where are you seeing this "13" number from? HyperAnd [talk] 05:51, 7 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Kevonrare: I strongly advise you to read and follow COM:File naming. Filenames like File:Harmonious forests.webm or File:Scattered Serenity.jpg (taken from Special:Contributions/Kevonrare are unsuitable for imagery of nature. While those names certainly are poetic, they are nonsensical from an illustrative standpoint - and won't help you attract the attention of the WLE juries. @HyperAnd: the "13" apparently comes from Commons:Wiki Loves Earth 2026 in Uganda#Statistics; that data update may be a bit lagging behind. If I wanna upload a product that I want someone to build for me where can I do that
Mass Containment Shell: The entire 3-layer assembly must be housed inside a Heavy-Gauge Sealed Aluminum Die-Cast Project Enclosure. The heavy mass of the aluminum walls acts as a barrier to block airborne acoustic frequencies.
Suspension Mounting: The internal 3-layer cylinder assembly must not touch the aluminum enclosure directly. It must sit on a floating internal plate suspended by four (4) Sorbothane Isolation Hemispheres (mechanical dampening mounts) anchored to the floor of the box. 5. GLAM picture
If an image is available on the internet partly without a free license, but the copyright holder wishes to "donate" it, what is the best practicable workflow to upload it to Commons without risking a deletion request?
Furthermore, is it considered sufficient verification if we can point to at least one external online source where the image is explicitly named and published under a free license? The usage of permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and {{VRT pending}} should be clear.
Thanks in advance for your guidance. Regards, Conny (talk) 04:57, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Conny: "one external online source" is a bit vague. If there is a site or page clearly under control of the copyright-holder that offers the free license in question, then that is sufficient. If it's the same place where the image is posted, list that as your source; if not, then explain the situation in the "Permission" section of the {{Information}} template (or other similar template), and provide the relevant link. No need to go through VRT if this is the case.
- On the other hand, if the "one external online source" is not obviously connected to the copyright holder, then it can't serve this purpose. Obviously, anyone could falsely state that they have a license they don't have. - Jmabel ! talk 05:57, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
Denison's Makeup Guide
The 1919 and 1926 editions of Denison's Makeup Guide for Amateur and Professional (both now in the public domain in the U.S., its country of original publication) are available at https://taramaginnis.com/1919-denisons-makeup-guide-for-amateurs-and-professionals/ and https://taramaginnis.com/1926-denisons-makeup-guide-for-amateur-and-professional/, respectively, but not in any convenient form. Does someone have a decent way to scrape and upload the contents? Or is someone aware of where it may already be available as a PDF? Ideally, I'd like the JEPGs of the pages (but the pairs of facing pages that are on that site would be fine), plus a PDF for each of the two editions. These are very important sources for American theatrical makeup in that period, and especially for documenting the stereotyped racial and ethnic stage conventions of the period. - Jmabel ! talk 06:08, 9 July 2026 (UTC)
- Ooh, these are nice high resolution scans! Shiny! If the legal situation is what you say then this will be a nice addition. Some pages seem to be missing: pages 30–31 and 46–47 in the 1919 guide for example. And there's some bleeding over from the reverse of pages, but that can be hard to avoid. – b_jonas 11:02, 9 July 2026 (UTC)

How to reconsider a deletion request
If I'm not agree with a decision on deletion request, started by me (files wasn't deleted), what should I do? Is there a page where I could request to reconsider this decision? MBH 00:24, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- @MBH: Are you talking about something you wanted deleted that was kept, or vice versa? (answers are different) - Jmabel ! talk 00:40, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Jmabel First. MBH 02:15, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- @MBH: Many of us use the AjaxQuickDelete gadget, which provides the automatic Nominate for deletion tool in the Tools menu on the sidebar. That tool would make a new section at the bottom of Commons:Deletion requests/Propaganda posters about Russo-Ukrainian War if there is a category full or set of uploads to nominate. You could also make such a section manually and transclude to today's requests page Commons:Deletion requests/2026/07/12 subject to {{Delete/doc}}. - @Jmabel First. MBH 02:15, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- @MBH: Make a new DR is often the thing to do. Some DR pages have 2 to 4 listings of a file, like Commons:Deletion requests/File:Nudist girl.jpg. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 00:55, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
Image titles
Do I need to make my image titles more descriptive, or are the titles I currently use for my uploaded images good enough? Fancy Fox Jr (talk) 01:37, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Fancy Fox Jr: I scrolled through the first 10 or so entries in Special:ListFiles/Fancy_Fox_Jr. Your filenames look mostly OK. For your information, the pertinent guideline is at COM:File naming. On the other hand, it would be totally within your rights to ask for a rename for files you uploaded. See COM:File renaming, such requests would fall under the first criterion. If you actually decide that you want a changed name on your upload(s), follow the procedure outlined at Commons:File renaming#How to rename a file, people such a I, the filemovers, will process such requests (depending on the actual queue, that could take a bit of time). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 01:49, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- I requested a rename for the file named "Colorado Grass Hill." Thanks. Fancy Fox Jr 02:22, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
Images - Politicians
I have read the Upload Wizard which essentially states I can not upload other people's works. I want to expand on my local politicians pages for Colorado (State Assembly House and Senate) and the first thing I wanted to do was upload their official portrait. Is that allowed?
When I say official portrait. I mean their official picture taken by the State and used on their legislative pages. STARWARSNAKE (talk) 07:43, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- You can upload other people's works, provided that they have licensed this work suitably. See COM:LICENSING. For official portraits, this is quite likely. Do you have an example web link?
- One thing you can't do is to add a new licence to someone else's work! (you don't control it, so you can't add licences)
- File:Sen. Ted Harvey, 2014.jpg uses a photo from Flickr, https://www.flickr.com/photos/coloradosenategop/12213439156/ , from a Colorado Senate account. They state on the Flickr page that it's usable (it's dedicated to the public domain) and when uploaded here, a licence tag was chosen to indicate that. The precise tag might change, depending on the original author. Andy Dingley (talk) 08:39, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- @STARWARSNAKE: you will probably want to read COM:THIRD. There are a lot of pitfalls and subtleties here: uploading third-party materials is one of the harder things to do correctly on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 18:17, 11 July 2026 (UTC)

Same image in different files
The following files contain the same image:
File:Peter Nicolai Arbo – Gizur challenges the Huns.png
File:Gizur and the Huns.jpg
File:Peter Nicolai Arbo - Painting - NG.M.04238 - National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design.jpg Sucksfierro (talk) 23:13, 11 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Sucksfierro:
- Nothing wrong with having multiple photos of the same painting.
- Usually, one of two things should be done:
- Link them to each other with {{Other version}} (each of these would get a link to the other two).
- Create a category for the painting (and possibly a corresponding Wikidata item if none already exists). All the parent categories that relate to the painting itself (as against, for example, source information) should be migrated up to that category, which can then be used as a parent category for the three files.

how do I bulk CSD F6 files?
Hi! I have found a bunch of files which have been bulk uploaded and fit the speedy deletion licensing laundering criteria. There's possibly more than 500-700 files and from what I can see with Commons:Deletion requests/Mass deletion request, I could send a mass deletion request, but I don't know if I could mass nominate them for deletion under speedy delete. How do I proceed? ~2026-36983-09 (talk) 13:44, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- Please link the relevant category, user name or whatever helps in identifying the files concerned. Registered users can use a tool called VisualFileChange to do bulk edits, including DR and speedy nominations. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 14:35, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- @Grand-Duc the user's name is User:Brian_Boru, what I was looking for was to mass bulk CSD F6 are the files uploaded with "Author: [http://www.fisicohomepage.hpg.ig.com.br/ Sérgio Horta" because it's a similar case to AtlanteanAstorian's bulk upload of emblems (same author attribution, same bad license (because the author didn't license it under GNU or CC-BY-SA 3.0), same ask for attributing it to a specific page that wasn't done and so on). It seems that the admin reviewing my speedy deletes disagrees with my F6 nomination (which is fair, the previous batch of images I nominated before were deleted under F1) but now I'm confused ~2026-36983-09 (talk) 16:11, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- Per Special:ListFiles/Brian_Boru, his files are mostly coats of arms, and heraldry stuff is usually often old enough to be PD-Old anyway, hence no opportunity for actual license laundering. If it becomes issues of COM:TOO or the like, speedies are most often unsuited anyway and standard DR would be the norm. Most countries went away from "sweat of the brow" doctrines, so the possibility is not non-zero that some claimed sources actually commit copyfraud by falsely claiming copyrights upon PD material.
- You see, the issues are quite likely too complex for the speedy deletion process (and that would also explain the rebuttal of your CSD F6 nomination).
- As heraldry is not really my mettle, I'm not really confident in touching this further, sorry. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 21:17, 12 July 2026 (UTC)

Question about complicated copyright status
I found a Flickr account where individual photos are marked “All Rights Reserved.”
However, the user’s profile says: “People have begun to post my photos on their websites. I am ok with this, as long as a link and attribution is included. Please take a look at the Creative Commons License for more information.”
Does Commons consider that profile statement to be a sufficient free license for the photographs, or would the “All Rights Reserved” designation on each photo control?

Updating Photo
How do I replace a photo on my client's Wikipedia page with a more current one? I have uploaded the new photo to Wikimedia Commons. Just don't know how to upload it to his Wikipedia page. Thank you. Tvdockum (talk) 22:33, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- Normally, you'd add File:C.E. Poverman - Street Shot.jpg into the article en:C.E. Poverman with the same technique as any other illustration gets into any other article. But in the actual case, you may run afoul of the Wikipedia rules about paid edits (en:Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure) and the image itself is problematic: the writer was imaged in front of a complex mural which most likely carries a copyright on its own. Unless the mural artist consents to a free license, the image can't stay on Commons (I nominated it for deletion on that rationale). Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 23:11, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- Here I think a possible solution might be a head-&-shoulders crop such that the visible portions of the mural would become de minimis; the resolution is high enough to make for a decent-sized, if not ideal, ‘close-up’ portrait. @Tvdockum: once this is sorted out, one way or another (did the shoot include any taken with non-copyright backgrounds?), as an editor with a conflict of interest you should request the update on the article’s Talk page rather than do it yourself.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 23:49, 12 July 2026 (UTC)
- Okay thank you. I appreciate both of your input regarding the photo I'm attempting to upload. Very helpful. I will see what I can do. Tvdockum (talk) 05:56, 13 July 2026 (UTC)
